View Full Version : Is this only happening to me? (tracking bug)

I tried using search on the forums here, and didn't find anyone having the same issue... so I decided to post and see if anyone else is having the same trouble. When I go to track a mob, sometimes I have to open the tracking window, and click the mob and "OK" twice, sometimes 3 times before it will give me a direction or a trail. In a lot of cases the mob is close, and there is no reason there shouldn't be a trail that pops up. I get the message "you begin to track...", and I try moving around as I know the trail can get lost at times, but nothing - until I open and try to track again, and in some cases a third time. Also, sometimes I just go to check something on track, I don't see it, and I hit cancel. Even though I've hit cancel it starts randomly tracking something, and either gives me the direction message or a glowing trail. Again, sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries to finally get the path to actually cancel. At first I thought this was just in RoK zones, but I just started a new swashy, she is having the same problem. Is anyone else having tracking issues like this?? This has been going on for awhile now and is annoying.

I can't say that I've noticed the issue you're describing. One thing I always do that might help you - when I select a mob to track, after closing the tracking window I open my map. You'll see a solid red dot on the map where the mob is, which can give you the first clue which direction to turn and how far away from you it will be.

Personally I've found tracking to be patchy at best. Usually its wholly unreliable or downright useless unfortunately. I've had the issue you have described as well.

I have not used the floating trail feature for years for exactly that reason, I think its a problem with the trail rather than track, as it will still turn up as a waypoint on your map window.

I didn't notice that so much, but I was indoors in very cramped quarters.

I did notice that the top right corner of the tracking window, has changed somehow and are all compressed into small rectangles.

I know the glowing trail has always been kinda bugged. However usually whenever I would track, I would at least get text telling me which way it was. These days seems to take 3 tries to even get that. Aside from that though, what about when you open your track window, cancel it, then it starts randomly tracking? Also, as I stated above, takes 3 tries to CANCEL it, even though I never wanted it in the first place. Sometimes I even have to resort to pulling up my map and canceling the waypoint that way. That is what is most frustrating. I can deal with pulling up my map and looking for the X for tracking I guess, but why is it tracking something when I didn't even ask it to? And then I have a pain of a time trying to cancel it when it DOES do that ...

I've had the problem with tracking also many times. I am thinking it's part of a problem with general waypointing, not just tracking specifically. Any time I take the quests "Hides for Brianna" or "Blumble Blunder" in Thundering Steppes, a waypoint is always automatically set (for me it has been anyway the last three or four characters I've done those on recently). I find it impossible to cancel it, even opening the waypoints window, clicking on the "map location" and then clicking on cancel. The worst part is the constant "your location is northeast" or whatever the message wordage is which ends up being repeated so much it scrolls my chat window off. I've bugged it whenever it happens. In that case it seems like it stops when I change my journal to show a different quest in the helper, but I'm not 100% sure. Since both the tracking and this problem involve waypoints it seems like that is the general problem. (And as already pointed out the map shows you the tracked or waypointed location.) The change to the buttons aggravates me a lot. I use those quite often on my scouts to filter out different levels when I'm trying to find something very specific, and it's annoying to have to look at them and think "gray, green, blue, white, yellow, orange, red...." to figure out which I want on and off (and you can't even tell their status easily!). I haven't seen anything on the forums as to whether that was intentional either (and of course it wasn't in the update notes).

I do hope the change to the buttons thing is a mistake, because I can't make heads nor tails of whatever it is trying to show me. It didn't seem I was able to click them, or otherwise do anything with them but squint at them.

I too have noticed some weirdness going on with the waypoints, as in I often seem to have what are apparently random waypoints to nothing I have intentionally selected to find, and they cannot be that easily gotten rid of.

I've noticed that if a mob vanishes from my tracking list, making the list move or recompile, while I hit track, I won't get the trail. It's very annoying.

I just noticed the button change yesterday, and I couldn't tell if I had them clicked on or off, and could barely tell what color each one was.If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There was nothing wrong with how the buttons were before.

On top of those annoyances, it appears that tracking no longer shows you a player in stealth who is in range. I thought it happened to me yesterday, but I'm positive it happened tonight. It's causing "social" problems because I always try to track the area before I go in after a mob, and twice now someone suddenly decloaks right in front of me when it's too late to do anything. I haven't seen any update notes on that change either. Searching the forums leads me to believe it was done for PvP but again nothing says that for sure. If I don't see any players on track, I figure no one is in range and don't pay attention to anything else but the mob I'm after. That's doubly annoying when major changes like that are made without telling us.By the way, the tiny filter buttons do work but it's basically impossible to be able to tell if they are on or off just by looking at the button.

I'm on a PvE server, and tracking never let me see a player in stealth before. I wouldn't expect it to. After all, they are sneaking around.

Actually if you are higher than them you can see and track them. I don't know what the level difference has to be, though. However, I know that the person I didn't see yesterday was higher than my scout (by three levels) so that is something I've never really paid much attention to since I've never had it be an issue before. Apparently even having "see stealth" doesn't help if the other person is higher.

I've run into this previously when someone was sneaking around the CBK area, I didn't see them until I also went stealth and then they popped up on tracking.

The one instance I have to draw from was with my husband, both of us playing rangers. Lolah is a few levels higher than Therendil, and wasn't able to see him on tracking when he was in stealth, nor was he able to see her. This was before LU45, though, so all bets are off.

Yes, happens to me too. Always been kinda buggy. Last night I was helping my daughter with a quest in Kylong and the NPC she needed was on my track list and then...gone. I hadn't moved out of range, if anything, I'd moved closer.
