View Full Version : Help: Using AEs (AAs) for desired combat style
Good Day!Im new to EQ2. I have Barbarian Pally at lvl 16, who has 6 AEpts to use. I have been reading the forums all over the placefor weeks trying to understand, terminology of the game (got thatcovered now), What attributes I need for the way I want todevelop my character, Int vs Wis, Str vs Agi, etc.I do not plan to do RAIDs. I play solo mostly, sometimes gettinginto an impromptu party. I suspect I need Really good DPS andsurvivability as my main requirements. Secondly, party buffingfor those rare times I will party (some of those 'party member'buffs will work on me, if I select myself first). I suspectArmor and accessories should be more defensive, since my AE ptswill go to as many damage skills possible, preferably the fastrecharge skills (I dont have a clue as to what they are yet.).Furthermore, do you evenly disperse points across say, AGI, STA,INT, STR or do one stat (AGI) fully then move to the next (STAfor example, could be INT) from the Crudader AEs?I must understand Int vs Wis lines. I have read so much, and Imstill confused. I have not found much on which is best for solobuild. I know INT strengthens magical attacks and you need tocarry a symbol in the off hand (no 2h or 1h+shield), which meansless physical DPS. Increased Magic Crit lies in the INT line, aswell. Does it more than compensate for one hand weap? AND whichweap is best for solo/Int build?Using the Wisdom line... It appears to be more party oriented, but I believe the skills will work on a solo player as well(please correct me). Wisdom appears to increase heal and damageof the party. You must use a sword and you give up increasedMagic crit. Does the Increase in Melee/CRIT DMG compensate forLoss of INT CRIT?Going AGI/STA gives me 2 choice of weap.. Spear class (AGI) andHammer (STA) class. ACK insanity! If I go INT I need offhand,Wis needs Sword! The 2nd Choices down from the STAT options(Agi/Sta/Str) are WEAPON skills.. And it is my understanding atthe least 4 pts must be spent in the WEAPON dependent skillbefore you can move on to the next one down.. Example: AGI >Joust(4 spear) > Trample. Same with STR (Axe), INT and WIS. Howdo you decide on your weap? At the least 8 pts will be wasted asfar as I can determine.I hope this makes sense. It has been quite confusing to me andyes I'm certainly becoming frustrated with the complication of itall.. Please help me pull it all together and forgive me for such longpost.Peace.. Lynlee

<p>the weapon/item requirements for the aa lines have been (for the most part) removed for all classes. you need not worry about that. i think with limited points it is best to pick a line you want to complete, then stick with that line until you get what you want from it. you get to see some nice improvements quicker that way than spreading them all out slowly. </p><p>for soloing, i found it was best to burn the mobs down asap rather than try to keep myself up with heals. i went with 2handers in offensive stance. with the introduction of aa's, things changed a bit, and with the EoF (paladin) aa's, things completely changed. with the hero line maxed, a good tower shield and 1 hander in offensive stance is the way to go. </p><p>your best aa choices will depend upon your gear, spells, and playstyle far too much for me to tell you where to go first, however, the haste from str line is great for soloing, end ability helps alot, wis line is more of a group thing, can help to some degree but probably not a good choice to put your points in if you are mostly soloing. sta line is fantastic, melee crits, Hit points, another aoe spell, and Divine aura. agil line is nice, but probably not a priority. int line is a great one for spell crits and heal crits (if you mostly group, heal crits are not that important, but really help if you are soloing) for the crusader trees, i would say go for int line first if you have good spells (adept3 of better) or sta line if you have good weapons (mastercrafted or better)</p><p>paladin tree i think a standard hero/wraths build works for both solo and group, then for soloing i would put my extra aa points into the healing line.</p><p>hope i cleared it up some for you =)</p>
<b>Good Day </b><span class="name"><b>Ogron! </b><b>Thank you so very much for your reply! Since Im only lvl 16, barely, $ is an issue! I have not been able to buy from Broker yet. I am wearing/using mostly NPC gears, currently Iron platemail, for lvl 10, and a couple quest rewards, boots, Plate leggings, and an assortment of rings, belt etc. So after I get pretty old lvl, and have the Hero line maxed THEN go to 1h and shield?Lastly, 'Paladin training'.. I forgot to mention this in my original post. I have a choice of 5: Incite, Blessed Weapon, Demonstration of Faith and Cry of Conviction. Im thinking Blessed Weapon, But Cry of Conviction appears to do largest damage, but only every 30 sec. Being solo, arent faster recharge skills, best way to go?I appreciate you taking the time to help this Newb!! haha At least I can use the 6 pts now!! <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img mce_tsrc=" />" /> Goody!!

<p>EoF = Echoes of Faydwer. This was the expansion released prior to RoK (Rise of Kunark). It added the Paladin tab to your Achievement Point (commonly called AA or alternate achievement) screen. The Crusader tab was added with KoS (Kingdom of Sky). </p><p>You can allocate a total 50 points to each of these tabs prior to level 70. At level 70 you will be able to earn an additional 20 points per tab for a final total of 140 AA's. You get a total of 6 free chances to reset each tab and can purchase additional resets (commonly called "respecs"<img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> anytime so don't fret overmuch about where you put a few points now... you can always change it later.</p><p>By "burn" I believe he means simply "kill". Actual flames aren't required. <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> If you can kill the mob before it kills you there's no need to worry about healing, but if the fight gets too drawn out the heals can be useful. </p>

<p>cry of conviction is very nice, especially with the stun effect it has, however, the blessed weapon buff costs no power, and triggers a fair amount, and does double damage on undead. you can improve both of them with aa points, although that's a few more xp away. either way they are both spells i upgrade as soon as i can. being an alchemist, that means as soon as i get my hands on the components.</p><p>for money, harvesting and selling collectibles or "shinies" ~ the little ? you see on the ground will usually make you some decent money. quests are good money and xp and dont forget you are most effective against undead, so kill extra of them for money.</p><p>sell adept 1 spells and treasured or better equipment that you are not going to use on the broker. many transmuters will buy them in order to get skillups. as you get some money pick up adept 3 quality spells as you can (you want to harvest stones for the rare loams) I would get my stance and buffs first but opinions will vary on that subject. pick up mastercrafted armor as soon as you can. get the imbued ones for the extra heals and damage. it's not much but it adds up.</p><p>i indeed meant kill as fast as possible, using spells, weapons, combat arts, sharp words.. whatever kills them fast. the idea being you kill them before you have to start healing yourself. ideally, your ward absorb most of the damage you take in the beggining, and you dont cast another heal until the mob is dead. if you start healing yourself too much, you arent doing any damage, and wind up having to heal more.. until you are out of power and dead. a heal here or there is not much of a problem, but if you are healing more than you are doing damage, you are not likely going to survive the fight. </p>

I have been afraid to sell stuff, since I dont know what its used for and I might need it. I wasthinking of making this baby a provisioner. Is that a good trade for oldest of 2. (other is Fae ranger from trial, lvl 15, was thinking of doing Alchemist for her, is good $? OMG I know what you mean about the healing! YIKES, was stuck in that trap a couple of times when I wasunable to run away. They dont stop following! Its like I am superglue to them! YOW! Guess will just stand myground and die! hahah It happens when mobbing occurs (I think you call it ADDs here). It looks likemy AoE skills are reaching out pretty far at times, and not so far at others. Makes it hard to judge whento use them. Im afraid to use the 'taunt' thing, given her armors and weap.. She is true wimp right now, untilI can get her equipped and skilled better. This is wandering off topic so I need to start new thread. I hope the info will help other newbies as it has helped me.Thanks again for your valuable pointers..

<p> Hi Lynlee</p><p>"Im afraid to use the 'taunt' thing, given her armors and weap"</p><p>do not be afraid to use your taunts remember the blinding rays line of taunts are your own personal debuffs to hit the mobs harder by reducing the mitigation of the mobs divine dmg !!!! resulting in you hitting them harder !!!</p>

<p>agreed, use your encounter ae taunt to debuff against divine. other than that, taunts merely help you maintain top hate position against classes that do alot more damage. once they are already hitting you it wont do any harm to cast that taunt. however, don't waste power on your single target taunt as it has no benefitial effects attatched to it. you would just be wasting precious power.</p><p>your aoe spells have a range of about 8 meters. you will begin to be able to judge that distance fairly well.</p><p>i have a provisioner, but was bored to tears by level 30 and am now pushing 42 out of sheer determination (stubbornness)</p><p>the alchy was alot more fun to level, i got to see what other fighter classes had for abilities along the way, and the potions helped fill some of the gap from less than awesome armor.</p>
Greetings.. Sorry it took me some time to reply.. The holiday weekend is busy! <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img mce_tsrc=" />" />My lil Palley just made it to Tradeskill lvl 10 and Adventurer lvl 17! YAY! Im not looking forward to beingprovisioner, but need outweighs want. Currently she is living on Jum Jum Pie and White Tea! ::snicker::Jum Jum Pie is not selling well in Broker. I thought it would.. oh well.. hahahI think I made a big mistake in buying a sword. I wanted to get 2H that hit for more, saw one for almost 18g.AFTER buying, I saw it had a delay of 6 SEC!! OMG! I figure by the time that baby can hit again, I will haveexhausted all my skills, get one hit, and the skills will not be recharged yet.. These are it stats:'Blackened Iron Claymore' (Greatsword) Mastercrafted +10str, +10int, +25hp, +25mpDmg 15-84, delay 6.0s, lvl 12.. (I sold lots o drops and got the golds from my other character to get it) As I understand it, once Attuned, I have to sell to the NPC, so resale in Broker is not possible. I dont believeI will get anything near 18g.. hahah oh well.. life is a series of lessons. Some bad, some good.. <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img mce_tsrc=" />" /> Thesword buying came about because I wanted to put AE pts into the Stamina line instead of Int.. Speaking of which.. I have put 6 pts into Int. I have 4 unused pts. Saving them thinking I could make my own Adept III skills eventually. I was able to make 4, before I ran out of Alkaline loam and solidified loam. Initially, I made them to sell in Broker. Then I thought, thats silly, since they are so expensive and I cant buy them.. They were already made, so I didnt make them for MY needs, but the need to sell. Anyway, goof number 2 is this:Blinding Ray, Paladines Aid, Divine Circle and Call of Inspiration are all Adept 3 now. The goof is thechoice of skills I believe. I have 1 masters, Cry of Conviction and 1 Adept 1 - Righteous Judgement. Now based on this, knowledge, Im wondering if I should go ahead and put my AEs in STA or Keep in INT. Or haveI so screwed it all up at this point in time, that it doesnt matter.. I removed Insite and am using Blinding Ray if I have more than one foe.. Thank you so much for explainingthe difference. I use bow if there is a group to pull out the least number I can.The Alchy is a Ranger/Fae. And dies a lot. <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img mce_tsrc=" />" /> OMG I know things will get better as they get older, but how doesone ever lvl in this game if they cant afford to get good armors and weapons AND upgrade their skills!? If I fightmy lvl (white), it is a 50/50 chance whether I die or not. I fight below me and barely manage to kill 2-3 greens. I knowyou all suffered thru this stage. I was hoping making One the forager, and the other turned purely Crafting, would help move things along financially. Fortunately, I AM making some Broker sales that have made thingsa bit better, thanks to the advice received here.

<p>You did the right thing with a 6 sec. delay weapon. </p><p>1. Paladins have many Spells and Heals with long casting times. So you don't loose Autoattacks, while casting a lot. </p><p>Example: You have a Weapon with 0,6 Delay and casts a 3 sec. Spell, you miss 4x Autoattacks. </p><p>2. If you skill Stamina Line for 22% melee crit chance, the bigger the distance from min. to max. Damage the better. </p><p>A critical strike is maximum damage x 1,3. So if you have a weapon with 70-100 Damage, a Crit would be 130 Damage Points. </p><p>A weapon with the same Damage Rating could be 35-170, which brings 225 Damage on a crit. </p><p>So more delay and higher max. damage is king for melee crit. </p><p>3. If you skill Strenght Line, you get haste. The slower the weapon, the more effect has haste. Take a 1 second weapon with 100% haste, it goes down to 0,5 sec. Delay. Take a 6 second weapon, it goes down to 3 sec. </p><p>Haste, DPS and Crit get much more from higher delay. </p><p>Procs: </p><p>Don't be worried, that with slower delay, you get less from procs. The proc percentage is Delay x 3. So a 1,6 second delay weapon has 4,8% chance per strike, which gets to the 1,8 times per minute, as with 1,6 seconds delay you strike 37 strikes. You proc more with longer delay, as you loose less autoattacks, while casting longer casting time abilities. </p>

<p>all that fel said about delay is true. slower weapons benefit more from crits, procs, and haste. </p><p>selling harvests and shinies and such on the broker along with completing quests is going to be your meal ticket. low level crafted equipment does not typically sell well on the broker. exceptions are some of the mastercrafted weapons and armor for people who are twinking their alts, however, you can sell low level rares faster than what you can craft from them.</p><p>if you have already spent your aa points you should keep going down the line until you get the spell crits. it gets expensive to visit the achievment counsel and respec your aa's. if you happen to have a free respec then i think you should go stamina 4/4/8, followed by str4/4/8, followed by int 4/4/8 also get the first aa on your paladin tree hero line. (added that as an afterthought it should probably be right after you get the melee crits maxxed. the greater heal amount from that attack will help some with your survivability. </p>
