View Full Version : Putting computer to sleep using VISTA.

This is not exactly EQ2 related, but it is technical...I have developed a (bad?) habit of always putting my VISTA computer to sleep or "low power state" as MS calls it.I just love to sit in my chair, press the space bar and I am ready to go in less than 10 seconds...but is there any indication that this mode is bad for the hardware? I have not had any problems but am curious if doing this overnight has been linked to any issues. Thanks!

It depends on the state of the system.

But bottom line, it's safe.

Although, I did not like Vista powering down one of my partitions on the HDD. Why it was powering down one of the platters and not the others in the HDD was the oddest thing I have seen. Maybe in server environments it's normal, but I've never noticed it before.

I've turned that off as the sound of it spinning back up every 20 mins (for that 1 partition) was annoying and led to a 5 sec delay and a click-click sound.

Everything else which is not mechanical is fine.

I've just realised you're actually referring to leaving it on overnight - or, in other words, 24/7.

Well, the only thing you should realise is that dust accumulation increases 10x fold relative to how many pets you have in the house or your propensity to scrubbing in the shower each day.

Just to be totally clear on my question.I am not asking about leaving the computer ON overnight. I am asking about putting the computer into a LOW POWER SLEEP STATE where it appears to b e off (all fans are off, and HDs do not spin) but when I pres s any key on the keybaord the computer comes to life, all my apps are loaded and ready for use withn 10 seconds. Basically the computer holds whatever I was doing either in RAM or on HD and it loads it in mere seconds. Needless to say some pwer must be in the system and I am curious if that is bad for the hardware.

It's safe under normal circumstances.

To which I have answered the first of two different questions in one go.

I have not ready any articles on this being a bad thing for the hardware. I will generally leave my gear on and running all day except on the hot days in summer during work hours, when I am not there anyhow.

It's definitely safe, though you may see decreased performance if you don't turn off your computer for an extended period of time. Turning it off for a few minutes should restore it to full performance, though.
