I noticed this evening that possess essence can be dispelled... Is that by design? I'll admit I haven't really played pet classes enough to know for sure, but I didn't think other "permanent" pets could be dispelled.

No, the summoners nor the illusionists' pets can be dispelled.

But yes, charm can be dispelled so my guess is possess essence could be as well.

This is why I have tried to argue that the coercer is not a true "pet class". Charm and Possess Essence are control spells. They allow a *temporary* pet. Thusly, they will not be immune to dispel magic or arcane cures. This is why I have always said even the charm line is a form of crowd control, even though it has the benefit of giving us a temporary pet. No, you don't bust out with charm in a hectic fight, except maybe in a last ditch effort when having one less opponent might help you survive (and in a case when you don't already have a charmed pet), but it is a form of crowd control nonetheless.

I find it odd that folks don't like that point of view when the mechanics fairly prove it.

Wrong, I've dispelled Illy's pet numerous times with my Defiler final KOS INT AA ability.
