ok since my last posting which had zero help! I've made a few changes in the hope of improvement and it's just become a joke!

started two weeks ago while using a speedtouch usb modem i had a random problem where the usb light would flash red my ping would go from 150ish to over 2,000 and masses of packet losses I would be booted and have to reboot my system in order to get any form of net use!

I've tried everything I can think of! replace modem reinstall driver replace rj11 lead plug into a mains powered hub etc no joy! so, I decided to ditch the modem and go in for a router! a billion 5200g R4 with built in firewall! after setting it up and getting IE and outlook to run I went into eq2! hoping and thinking it would run better than before! what a joke I get fairly stable pings if I look at the wall but combat just gives me masses of packet losses around 15-25 at a time and heavy lag, anything from 500 to 1,200 which it does recover from most of the time! although I did get booted while trying to zone a short while ago! (around 6:30pm UK time) as everything on my system is clean as in no virus etc and the router is only about 3 hrs old as is the rj11 cable I can't see how it can be a problem my end! so what the heck is causing this to happen suddenly? btw I can surf the net without any form of problem power lights is ok system ready light is ok as is the adsl and pppoe lights! all fine the other really weird thing is, I can eq2 between 9am and 12 noon and have no trouble! yet when i go on in the afternoon I get nothing but trouble!! anyone got any kind of idea before I give up and cancel?

extra note router has built in firewall which I am using and I've shutoff the windows one I also play swg but not had a chance to try it yet any ideas on why this is only seems to happen on eq2?

Sounds like a bad connection issue.Do me a favor and post a patchping and tracert from your PC when the connection is good, and when it is bad. Open the Start menu, choose Run... Command, type "cmd" (no quotes) in the space provided, then hit Enter. The MS-DOS Prompt window should appear with a prompt. If you get a bad command error, please type “command” instead of “cmd”. Now type each command below and then hit enter. Once the command finishes and returns to the prompt, type in the next one and hit enter. Go ahead and replace the server names below with your server.the first command is tracert unrest.everquest2.comthe 2nd ispathping unrest.everquest2.comthe pathping can take up to 5 mins to run, so feel free to go make a sammich or run around the block while its doing its thing.

ok quick update! the first two traces were done early am uk time! went in after and all seemed fine however! after trying to start combat I started to get high packet losses around 25ish and everything went real slow out of combat was fine! I can;t see how I can have a bad connection when I've changed over to using a router which as far as I can see is set up correctly? and this issue ONLY occurs with eq2 over the last two weeks connecting through a usb modem and then a band new router! I'm using the same card/set up I've had for ages with no changes made to it

thanks for the reply the snr margin is 13.5 downstream and 23.0 upstream! have only the master socket with two extensions running off of it! all have a filter! looked up the tcp mtu option and it is set to 1492 although the multicast is disabled if that means anything! I've been running swg for an hr or so and have had no problems with that what so ever! it just seems limited to eq2. any more help to get back on track would be welcome

not sure what other traffic I could be generating! I have one cordless phone plugged in downstairs and another plugged in upstairs along with a sky box connection the other extension is unplugged most of the time.

if I need to do port tiggering/forwarding what do I need to add? as so far I can;t find the setting in router set up to do this! but as I say I can run swg with no problems at all! this seems limited to just eq2 but I would like to get this sorted if at all possible

One other wierd thing I've just noticed! on all my characters I've lost the ability to see my cloak! it makes no difference if I have it ticked as hide or if it's unticked! it just won;t show up I'm getting to the point where I've had enough of this swg runs without a hitch and yet suddenly after almost four years eq2 decides not to co operate any more ANY help to sort this is welcome

I would kick the PC in the side.NO really don't do that, although...no no. let's not get into PC abuse. Here are the ports to have open EverQuest II Patch: A TCP connection is initiated at port 7010. EverQuest II Game Client: UDP connections are initiated from the EverQuest II client on UDP ports 9100, and UDP ports in the range 32800-33000. Additionally, ICMP messages type 0 (echo reply), 3 (unreachable), 8 (echo request) and 11 (expired) should be permitted bi-directionally between the client PC and the EverQuest II servers. There seems to be an issue on both path pings with 8 --- 100/ 100 =100% 100/ 100 =100% nlamtr1103er1-15-0.am.nl.ip.att.net [165.87.217.38]so here 100 packets are sent 100 packets are lost.Try the ports though, powercycle and try for another IP address and hipefully you can get routed to the splitpaw server through different hops.

many thanks for you reply TrevorG soory to be a pain but I'm not used to routers in the slightest and the one I got was becuse my local shop said it was easy to set up and get connected other than that I've no idea how to do the ports! I've looked through the set up page and can;t seem to find how to do it! so if you could put it in a idiots guide I'd be very gratefull the router is a billion BiPac 5200G R4 other than that I'm stumped! sry to be a pain! would this also cause the loss of the cloaks? while I was on the usb modem before that threw a wobbler I remember seeing em with no trouble but since then (thursday) I've not been able to see any cloaks on any of my characters at all

OK forget the cloak business I found I'd unticked render cloak option! durr other than that still stuck but I tried to play early this morning (sat 9:30am sih) and found although I got a large packet loss of around 23 that was all that happened! no high ping could it be an increase in population causing this? I would still like to try the port business but like I've said I've no idea on how to do this! a nice idiost guide to the billion router port setting would be nice if you could conjour one up TrevorG! otherwise It might be time to introduce Mr big lump hammer to Mr PC!

I would call the manufacturer of the router personally. I can't really give any support for a router, besides giving out the port information. If you let me know the mfr I can get a 800 number for you.

that is the IP of your PC.You can find this a couple of ways. open up the Start menu, choose the Run command, type "command" in the space provided, then hit Enter. If you're using Win2k type "cmd" instead of command. For Vista, "type command" at the search bar on the bottom of the Start Menu. The MS-DOS Prompt window should appear with the prompt, "C:windowsdesktop". Then type the following commandipconfigthen hit ENTER. You will see an IP address, that is the one you are looking for.

thanks for that info DanielH I got a reply back from virgin after a bit of complaining and was given the usual rubbish about updating modem drivers and switching off ftp progs etc! nb modem was using latest driver anyway! I have an option to live chat with their online suppport but I'm not able to do it today as I'm not on for very long, so I might give this a try early next week and report back! tried a pathping and still have 100% losses at the same two places ah well! good job I got hold of a low priced copy of swg to which I have zero problems with! weird or what but hey at least I have that!

OK small update which doesn't really improve things! spoke to vm tech support today and asked if I was put onto this adsl max connection recently and.....I've been on it since sept 2006!! so it aint that which is the problem! BAH! no other line changes or maintenance has been happening at all for years in my area so it's nothing with vm! I explained the problem to the tech chap and he's just as baffled as me as to why this is happening and how I can play swg with no problems and yet have this odd problem with eq2! so where the problem is or what it is still seems to be a mystery! I wondered if a reinstall would make a difference? but I would assume not! any other ideas?

So that means you've got an extremely impressive Attenuation (as even though it has peaked to 8mbit, the SNR hasn't dropped to the limit (not even close) - your Line Attenuation is therefore 17db or less: which you should be thrilled about)).

As an example, if you were ever to move to ADSL2+, you would get a 22mbit connection.

If your upstream is 23db then I bet you have 448kbit going there too.

Another interesting thing is that I get 7 hops to splitpaw but they start from 7ms all the way to 22ms. When I actually play EQ2, of course, the ping will increase to 100ms if there is a loaded server or my UI is accepting a lot of incoming chat information. But 100ms is as high as I have seen it - it's mostly 33ms (even in a group - don't know about raid, probably twice as high at least).

So it's nothing to do with your house (because SNR and Attenuation will never change unless you swap ISP and even then, it's rarely more than 1db) and nothing to do with BT's DSLAM.

So that leaves your ISP.

The SWG part - to be quite honest; that doesn't make any sense unless you are playing it just at the best of times. Where, when you play Everquest 2, you just happen to pick a great time to do it.

Now that's not an indication of a difference equalling a problem.

This is my tracert.

It's really impressive because my Line Attenuation is 11db (one of the lowest in the entire country - though I have heard that 1 in every 200,000 households can get as low as 9db from the DSLAM Exch). When 512kbit was the fastest service you could get my SNR was around 45db. The higher the SNR db, the faster that line is capable of going. Every 2Mbits takes away about 6db from the line. If you take too much away (going faster and faster) and hit 6db *SNR db, the line is very likely to drop if anything significant goes through it. At 11db Line Attenuation my ADSL2+ connection would hit just south of 24mbit.

I'm also on the enta.net network backbone. Which, suffice to say, if your ISP knows what they're doing with traffic management and routing will provide you a service other ISPs can only dream about. I'm with that particular ISP <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" width="15" height="15" />

Now I'm not saying VM are not that good (what with Sir R Branson you know), but it really depends how well managed their net backbone is because it has nothing to do with your DSLAM. Which is pretty [I cannot control my vocabulary] impressive (including the way you have your house wiring done).

Tracing route to amseq2-03-01.everquest2.com [195.33.139.96]over a maximum of 30 hops:1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.12 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms poplar.dsl.enta.net [84.45.242.70]3 11 ms 9 ms 11 ms vlan4001.global-switch.dsl.enta.net [84.45.242.65]4 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms gi3-8.telehouse-east.dsl.enta.net [84.45.242.50]5 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms te5-2.telehouse-east.core.enta.net [62.249.192.121]6 11 ms 11 ms 10 ms ns.de.prserv.net [195.66.224.27]7 19 ms 18 ms 19 ms nlamtr1103er1-15-0.am.nl.ip.att.net [165.87.217.38]8 19 ms 21 ms 19 ms vl50.amsixmsfc-1.sonyonline.net [195.33.129.76]9 20 ms 19 ms 20 ms 195.33.139.96Trace complete.

well I'm glad it's be shown that's it nothing to do with me or my line at the house! but it still leaves me stuck with eq2! as to swg I could pick any time to play eq2 this week and have this really odd problem which causes packet loss 25 and over and around 2,000 ping when ever or what ever spell I cast on any character and then quit there and go straight onto swg and it'll work fine! the only thing I can think which doesn;t make a lot of sense is that I've not installed swg all that long ago! around 2 months or so back! and I've had eq2 on there since around early feb! which is why I was wondering if a reinstall might sort it out! although I can't say I'd enjoy redownloading and setting up the ui again. But I can't understand why it seems to be limited to eq2 and what exactly is causing it, When I spoke to the "tech" support they had confirmed that no changes/work/improvement has been carried out either nearby or on my connection since 2006! so what this is no one seems to know! ah well good thing I've less free time now anyway.

Therefore, what you experience with SWG is going to be different than EQ2 - not to the level of problem you have, but they are going to be different.

The last time I checked, Splitpaw is in Amsterdam (Runnyeye is in the US). SWG's server - no idea. But I bet you a whole heap of cash that it isn't going in the same direction as it does with EQ2.

Like I said before, the hops you take to get there are average - they're ok; they seem stable too - and there are few enough of them so that if any one of those routers (per hop basis) has a problem... well you get the idea.

If you went to Runnyeye (and I have) you'd get 16 hops (maybe with NTL it's higher than with my ISP's network, but I doubt it) - and unless you have the best ISP who have the best control management of their networks, this is very risky if you want a stable ping for any period of time (what with going over the Atlantic an'all) so your ping is going to be (for me, 90-100ms just sending a 32byte packet there and back). Because if one of them gets rammed (the routers) by thousands of other connections on your route, the whole lot gets affected: sometimes lasting for mere seconds to several minutes of high latency lag).

But the world is changing (thanks Cisco) and our networks are hundreds of times more reliable (and better performing) than 5 years ago when DSL first came to the market in terms of how much can go through them (traffic management).

So in the afternoon, VW's QoS policy should be updated thus.
UPDATE 18th May

ok here is a weird update I just logged in today for a check to see ifanything has changed and well there is a difference! I used a alt and had zero trouble with him!! went back to the illu alt that I had the problem with to start with and he just went nuts! 28pl and ping of 1,200 tried a wiz and fury alt and although I had a bit of ping around 900ish and 2pl after that they were both very stable and playable! now could this be down to something wrong with the files related to the illu alt? I've not tried all my alts yet as I've not enough time today but they all now seem fairly stable other than my illu where the problem first seemed to have started with! any one got any ideas that could help?
