<Note: After some searching I found there are A LOT of people with this problem. The post is huge, yet no specific answers seem to be available. Updating drivers has no effect. Using a memory monitor you can see the memory requirement increasing until it hits 92% and then it's bingo---you're out. I have given up playing my Gorowyn and Kelethin characters. Hopefully some more technically adept players will at one point have some solutions....Pity of the time invested in the characters >

<Note 2: I just realised that this only starts happening once you get close to the city of Gorowyn. The initial beach and quests were fine...>

I recently purchased Rise of Kunark and Shadows over Fedweyr expansions. I created a new character (number 6, I am afraid I have a case of alk-itis), a Sarnak Shadowknight and a Fae Conjuror. When I play in Gorowyn or walk around in Kelethin, the game keeps crashing giving me the message: "Critical error---game ran out of memory". This is a bit odd, as I run it on a system with 3 GB of Ram and a GFORCE 8800 GTS. In addition, I only have this problem in Gorowyn or Kelethin, not in any of the other zones where I play with my other characters.

These are my specs:

INTEL core Quad CPU Q6600 at 2,4 Gh

3GB RAM

32 bit OS

Windows VISTA Ultimate, Service pack 1, V .668

NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GTS

Getting the game to run under Vista was a nightmare, but I managed with the excellent tech support fora. The thing is, I dont think its a Vista problem, as I do not experience the crash in any of the other zones.

I can play, but crash every 20 min or so, after which I have to reload the game, only to crash 220 min later or so.This impacts quite negatively on my playing experience.

If you any ideas that do not involve dis-assembling my beloved PC, I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks

greeeeaaat. just when i thought things would be a-okay. im on a 4 gb ram set up but still downloading the game on the new computer and was hoping the days of crashing were behind me. it did back on my old system but i figured it was just due to the machine being 3 years old. it also happened to me in RoK. the last straw was when i had my main trapped due to crash upon login at teren's grasp all during xp bonus weekend unable to get in. now i upgraded computers and hope the crash is over. also not excited to hear about vista issues as im stuck with that abomination of an OS. where'd you say you got the vista help to even run the game?

I spent A LOT of time on this forum, found players posting threads on a few other fora and followed those (what can I say, I was desperate...its an excellent game but there are many issues....however, once fixed things went well, until I entered Kelethin and Gorowyn).

Once I got the latest VISTA service packs and NVIDIA drivers it was ok, only to be hit by the administrators rights issue: the patcher cancels the update and you dont get the START button. There was a good post on it on one non SOE forum that took you by the hand, literally spelling out how to change the admistrator rights in Vista. It was not as simple as many posts in this tech forum suggested. You had to configure your administrator rights in Vista, not easy if you are not into the technics. I posted that solution in the forum here at SOE, copying the approach the person posted in the other forum.

Anyway, dont despair. You may be just fine. And there are quite a few people willing to help, but it needs some patience. And some people jump quite fast into tyechnical details, which makes it hard to follow (or do).

If you got problems send me a PM and I will try to figure out what I did.

Enjoy the playing. In the end its worth it. Once it runs....

Can you supply this link to the post please?

Hello. I buily a new pc a month or so back and have similar specs as the OP. I also had this issue aswell did a buddy of mine. I built his PC at the same time as mine. What I found out was a good fix for this is. And forgive me My memory is fuzzy on the actual name of the setting. In your eq2 display options ingame you'll have Texture settings area. 3 settings total. One is Character LOD texture resolution. Set that offender to LOW. I did that and no out of memory crash in weeks. Also seems to help improve general lag in high pop zones too. Give it a try. It certainly won't hurt.

Thanks for the responses. One of the good things about EQ2 is the user community...

<The below refers to the authorisation issue with VISTA, not to the issue with the memory leak. For a solution to the memory leak issue, ref further below>

As for the link to my post....emberrased to say that I just did a search but I cant find my own post. SOmehow my profile doesnt reflect my postings either so I cant find it there either. If someone knows how one can review your own postings, I would be happy to hear and I will post the link to the solution...

But I did try to re-do what I did. The point for me was that right clicking on the EQ2 or Everquest 2 command clicking "run as adminstrator"didnt work. Maybe because I got several securty profiles there.

The post told you to go to the directory where EQ2 is installed and where the EQ2 command and Everquest 2 command were located. In my case this was c:programme filessonyeverquest 2 (the default installation location, but this can change depending if you chnaged the installation directory when you installed).

Right click EQ2

Click on the Secuirty Tab

Select the user profile in the box

Click Advanced

Selct the user profile in the box

Click Edit

Click edit again

Now select all permissions

Click ok

Now check the box "Include inheretable permissions from the objects parent"

Click ok

CLick ok

Click ok

Now it should work or your computer should explode. The first is good, the second not....obviously

Again, I am not a techie, just trying to remeber what was said in the post. If people think this is not a solution, feel free to correct.

I hope this helps

Cheers

Forgot to mention: you may want to repeat the above for the Everquest 2 command, that is located in the sasme directory. DO them both, or choose the command with which you start EQ2....

Hi Sawgrass,

I tried what you said and it worked. SOmehow, when the texture resolution is changed the memory leaking stops. I had all my txture resolutions on maximum. I tested it with all of them on medium, and it worked....no more memory crashes. Now I am playing with character texture on high, the rest on medium and still its ok. However, once any of the three resolution options is set to Maxiumum, the leaking starts again. <I can check this as I am running a memory monitor in my side bar and the side bar is visible during gaming. >

For those who have no clue what we're talking about:

If you have the error message "Out of memory when requesting XXX amount of memory", you may want to do the following:

CLick EQ2 button

Click Options

Click Texture Resolutions

Adjust the three resolution options you have, so that none is on max.

Click ok

You may want to play around with how high you can set them. For me it worked with "character LOD texture resolution" to "Minimal", "Character texture resolution" to "High"and "Texture resolution" to "Medium". But thats on the abbove mentioned system.

Granted, I was nicer on all on maximum, but as soon as I leave this zone I'll shift back to maximum. And the looks didnt degrade very much.

So try it. It may work for you too.

And Sawgrass: THANKS!

Lazarus

Glad it worked! Still don't know why that one setting and it is only that one setting is borked. I got mine set to the lowest and running everything and I mean everything else on Max. And also I should note I run XP Home. So don't think it is Vistas fault. It's a SOE bug.
