Ok, the +spell crits were brought up in the "Troub dps" thread, but nobody has really touched on +spell damage (although most profiles I've examined seem to, like +crits, have a healthy mix of both +melee damage and +spell damage).

I'm just curious how effective +spell damage is on a bard? I was always under the impression that those classes with low damage spells (such as the Enchanters) benefit more from +spell damage than they do from +crits; and vice versa for the classes with the big damage spells (such as Wizard). So it would stand to reason that Bards would benefit more from +spell damage (as our nukes don't hit excessively hard. Going by parses, Shrill tends to hit for 2.5 - 3.5k at level 80). However, I read a post some ways back I can't be arsed to necrobump claiming that +spell damage "marginalizes at 3.0s casting speed", and how Bards wouldn't get the full effect or something? Can anyone explain this in English?

As an example, at level 37 one can wear the Gnomeland HQ cloaks. Looking at them, we have a choice between a 200pt ward proc cloak, or a +25 spell damage cloak. Now, I was initially thinking the ward cloak easily one. But now I'm not so sure. At 37, one's Shrill will most likely be hitting for about 190-300 damage if using Adept I version (and will vary somewhat by INT). Adding +25 spell damage to this, assuming we get the full benefit, would show a damage increase of between 8.3% and 13%. That's fairly significant, especially considering there are several other spells this would also apply to. Would the +spell damage cloak win out?

And one final question - does +spell damage affect proc spells such as Aria's? or the DoT on Kian's? or what about melee weapon procs? (+spell crits affect weapon DD procs, so would +spell damage affect proc damage?)

Any info appreciated. Thanks Troubs!

Not a Troub, but I think I can answer many of your questions.

1. I don't believe procs are affected by spell damage....only the actual spells themselves. I don't know if it affects procs that are directly resulted from buffs such as Aria. If they do affect these buffs I think it would be based on each individual person's spell damage and not your spell damage getting applied to everyone else.

2. There is no normalization with spell damage, mechanics have changed since that time. If you look at your minimum and maximum damage ranges and add 50% to each amount you get your new minimum and maximum ranges if you capped your spell damage for that particular spell.

The shrill that you mentioned above hits for 2,500 to 3,500 that means the max spell damage would be 1250 for the min and 1750 for the max + spell damage to cap it out...making it hit for a total of 3,750 to 5,250.

there is no longer any normalization around a 3 second casting time for the amount of damage you can add to your spells. they should cap out at 50% of their damage (before +damage is added) - this 'base' damage includes bonuses from raising your int.however, as far as whether or not spell damage is more beneficial than crit, i tend to err on the side of crit, since it affects things like dissonant note (aria), precise note (potm), and any other proc effects from gear or spells. + spell damage does not affect these.at level 80, my goal is to keep my +spell damage around 700 (this is about the point where it seems that adding more becomes less valuable, since only one or two spells can be increased beyond this point). reaching that value is actually pretty easy with the quested and instance-dropped cloth 'caster' gear available in rok.hopefully that helps.

Pardon my ignorance, but I know where to go to check my +Crits, but where do I got to see how much +Damage I have on me? Do I just have to look at every piece of gear that I have and count them up?
