Wondering if there is any real or important difference between using an invis totem or a stealth totem or tinkered smokescreen?

Some mobs can see through invis but not stealth, and vice versa.

I'm sure there are other differences that I don't know about... but that's the reason I've always noticed

Also, is it an equal split? Or do more mobs see through Inviability then Stealth?

They are very different in that they are two different spells and require two different counter spells in order to see them. In PvE, it's not a huge problem, but it can be very critical in a PvP environment.

For instance, as a mystic, I have a self buff that allows me to see stealth, but not invis. I can see all those scouts lurking about, but I cannot see anyone who is invisible.

As near as I can tell, however, mobs are different. If they can see one, they can see the other. I think there might be a few exceptions to this, but I can't think of any offhand. I assume the reason for this is to keep encounters balanced - is it fair for a scout to be able to sneak by, but a mage gets nailed?

There are also a few places (very few, as far as I can tell) where you'll find mobs that are stealthed or invised. In these cases, you will need to have the correct counterspell up (or both) in order to see all of them. The one that pops to mind is the eyes at the entrance to Deathtoll - there's always one that is either stealth or invis, and it's random as to which it will be.

There are totems that can give you stealth or invis, and see stealth or see invis. I think at higher levels the totems will cast both on you, giving you the ability to be both stealth and invis and to see both stealth and invis.

I guess the real question that most people on non-PvP servers has: Are there mobs that see someone using a chameleon totem that would not see someone using a jaguar totem? Or the reverse?>>Totem of the Jaguar (usable at level 30) grants both invis and stealth, and, for some reason, tend to be cheaper on the broker than Chameleon totems. <<They both cost the same to make so the price variance is likely due to the fact that most woodworkers make Jaguar totems in larger quantity than Chameleon totems because they sell better (since they sound more impressive in their description). The higher priced chameleon totems you see sitting on the broker have probably been sitting there for awhile.
