View Full Version : Crashing after a few minutes

I recently upgraded my video drivers and purchased the ROK expansion. <div></div><div>Ever since these upgrades I have been experiencing a complete crash that causes the PC to reboot after a few minutes of play. Upon restart there is an error message that tells me the PC has recovered from a serious problem. The crashing does not seem to be zone related and has occurred in Antonica, Queynos Harbour, South Queynos etc.</div><div></div><div>I thought it might have been the display drivers and removed/cleaned/reinstalled the old ones but no such luck.</div><div></div><div>I have also tried running a full filescan from the launcher on my EQ2 but also no change. If anything was corrupted etc. would that have found it ?</div><div></div><div>If anybody can suggest any other things I can try I would appreciate it as I have been playing EQ2 now for almost 2 years and it has run perfectly without a hitch until now. This is not happening while I am using any of my other programs and I can leave my PC on overnight without an issue.</div><div></div><div>My PC specs:</div><div>Windows XP Home</div><div>ATI x1650 PRO AGP 512MB video card</div><div>2G RAM</div><div>AMD 2600+ CPU</div><div>HP w2207 monitor</div><div></div><div>Thanks.</div>

<p>I have exactly the same problem. I recently upgraded to Catalyst 8.3 and the problem started right after that. Going back to old drivers doesn't resolve the problem.</p><p>I'm running Windows XP Professional and have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro AGP card.</p><p>I turned off automatic reboot on crash, just to see the bluescreen and maybe find out what is causing the crash, but all I get is a memory adress. No module, exe or anything.</p><p> // Smary</p>

Did you just upgrade the drivers or the whole catalyst package etc. ?<div></div><div>Anyway, I'm going to do a full uninstall and then re-install from the DVD to see if that helps. Get ready for hours of download........</div><div></div><div>Thanks.</div>

A full re-install did not cure it. <div></div><div>It now crashes within 30 seconds of being in character select before I even get into the game.<div></div><div>I am willing to try any other suggestions.</div><div></div><div>Thanks.</div></div>

Well, now I'm pretty sure the problem lies with EQ2. I played Guild Wars for a couple of hours and also Vanguard without a problem.<div></div><div>Can a TSR please review the crash info I posted and let me know what else to check ? I'm paying for a subscription which I now cannot use.</div><div></div><div>Thanks.</div>

Hrm. I'd probably get another hard drive and try a clean install of XP, with all updated drivers, and install EQ2. See if it happens with that? Another hard drive, so you still have all your old data just in case it doesn't work and you can just go back to the old hdd.

After the uninstall I did run a checkdisk, norton disk check and then defrag. Nothing indicated any errors and being as everything else still runs fine I am not suspecting the hard drive (for now...)<div></div><div>Thanks.</div>

No no, that's not what I ment. I just ment a clean install of whatever OS you are running on another harddrive. Just to see if EQ2 will work on a bare OS.

Did you uninstall the driver complete including cleaning up the registry? A lot of video drivers leave information on your drive and really do not fully un install. The system then gets confused. This is a problem now for a while. <b>Never</b> just update a video driver, always fully uninstall the old one and clean the registry first.You may have to do a complete new install including your OS. Its a pain in the butt. Don't forget, Fdisk your HDD before formating to really get rid of everything including a boot sector clean. Fdisk/ mbr is the boot record clean up command but use this only if you don't have other partitions on the drive as it also clears partition info.J.C.

Thanks.<div></div><div>Yes, after driver uninstall I ran drivercleaner which is supposed to clean everything ATI related off the PC.</div><div></div><div>Everything else runs fine, Vanguard, Guild Wars are both actually smoother with the new drivers. FIXED IT !!<div></div><div>Removed the catalyst 8.3 drivers, ran driver cleaner pro and put my original catalyst 7.2 drivers on and hey presto I'm back up and running EQII !!</div><div></div><div>I filed a ticket with ATI and all they told me to do was revert to old drivers. Well I did some testing with the ATI drivers from 7.2 up to the current 8.3 to find out where they start to break.<div></div><div>Here are the results with EQ2:</div><div></div><div>7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 7.6, 7.7 work fine</div><div></div><div>7.8 works fine but causes my objectdock to stutter</div><div></div><div>7.9 crashes EQ2</div><div></div><div>7.10, 7.11, 7.12 give me the error "<verify> E:liveeq2frameworkcoredevicessrcdirectxrenderdevic e.cpp (1059) failed to create D3D device for Radeon x1650 series"</div><div></div><div>8.0, 8.1, 8.2 just crash my PC when I run EQ2.</div><div></div><div>Something seems to have happened after they went from 7.7 upwards</div><div></div><div>I'll post this to ATI and see what they say.</div>

I'm interested in what the other basic info on your machine is.  I'd assume XP, but give me some sort of a hardware profile on what else you're running.

Hey Bourne. I have been having probs for about 2 months. Haven't been able to get past loading UI on game boot then comp crashes. I have gone through lots of support with SOE but to no avail. I too have an ATI card. I will try the drivers you suggested and see what happens. I do believe I had earlier drivers than you are mentioning when the probs started but did notice changed to problems with different drivers s you described. Maybe because I have a different card the problems vary with the drivers. I will let you know how I make out.

PCIe or AGP ?</p><p>By the way, SOE told me to stay with v7.7 drivers as they did not know why it was happening.</p><p>They told me to contact ATI, but given that I only have problems with EQ2 (Vanguard, Guild Wars, Lord of the Rings Online, Flight Simulator etc. all work perfectly well with the latest drivers) I can;t quite see how it is an ATI driver issue.</p><p> Thanks.</p>

Hey Bourneville,Have you tried to turn of flora/fauna if it is enabled?How about turning off the hardware acceleration on your sound card? (you can do this in DXDIAG)If not try either one and lets see what happens.

Just an update to this thread having tried today 8.6, 8.5, 8.4, 8.3 I'm am getting the issue the original poster mentioned. As I have no problem at all with any other program. NWN2, Oblivion, Witcher, Sup Com, CoH it is only happening with EQ2. Rolling back to 7.7 is stable with EQ2 .OS: WinXpVCard: X800Pro 256

<p>I am attempting the same thing with an AMD Dual Core 2.8GHz Dell X400 with a Radeon X600 256.  From the comments it looks like all of the systems were AMD and 256MB ATI Radeon.  I just wanted to bump this since I looked for this post for 4-5 hours and this seems to be the only place that has it.  Thanks for all your hard work in finding a solution, I wouldn't have thought to go back that far.</p>
