I am a returning Eq2 player after being off for about a year and a half with brief stints after Kos and Eof were released. I have a 35 Coercer, 29 troub, 29 Defiler, 24 Inq, and lower lvl TD versions of the top three to get a feel for the game again. I am still undecided on a main. I am looking for a class that can solo reasonably well, but is needed in groups. I have a life so my play time is limited to about 1 hr to 1 and a half sessions. Here are my likes and dislikes of each:

Troub - I love soloing with my troub. I feel free when I play him. I Love versatilty and I had a bard in EQ. However this is my weakes toon. I can barely take group pulls with this guy. In groups, I am wanted but I'm not THE MAN. Because they could easily function without me or what I bring is not that noticeable. Although, I was in a group in RoV that really appreciated me joining them and we had fun killing easy stuff.

Defiler - I like to help and heal. I thought this was a good compromise toon. I solo slow but can kill most anything eventually. Best to solo more than one mob at a time. I really enjoy him in groups as a healer. However, I can't get excited about this guy. I don't look forward to the next spells because they all seem boring. He gets repetitive soloing.

Coercer - This toon ruined the game for me. I can do almost anything on my coercer and I judge every toon by what I can do with him because he was my main when I started. Every other toon seems weak because it can't do what my coercer can. The problem is I die, alot on this guy. The class is so capricious and demands a micro manage mindset. Sometimes I just want to mow through mobs and not have to think and plan so much. He is great to awesome in groups and I am the most skilled with this class but I don't have good gear or Master charm. If he could wear leather and had a tad stronger nuke there would be no question as to my main.

With limited playtime and average to below average gear, I'm looking to concentrate on a toon to get to high levels that is versatile and fun.

Troub - 2nd least played class, coercer is least played, very highly useful in raid situations. Motto is (or used to be at least) "looking bad to make you look better" so be prepared to contribute highly to groups without them realizing that you are and not significantly appreciating you for it. In group environments Dirge's are generally higher desirability than Troubs.

Defiler - healers are often in demand, a shaman or a templar can often allow a single healer where some groups might otherwise require two. For pickup grouping this class is probably the one that will be the easiest way to enter a group setting.

Coercer - for strictly solo and grouping experience, i.e. not raiding, this is a spectacular class. You can dps, you can pretend to be a secondary healer by stunning, you can solo things that other classes only dream of doing (solo named mobs in KC, Chardok, Sebilis, Chelsith anybody?).

For the coercer, be prepared for a little more difficulty getting in groups as people have a preconceived notion of what enchanters do that falls short of what you actually can do (hope that made sense). Many enchanters out there completely suck, will regularly parse below 400 zonewide, and insist on mezzing everything. Grouped twice with one illusionist that the highest zonewide I ever saw from him was 250. Just giving us all a bad name.

I played all 3 classes. All 3 are excellent choice for group/raiding. The question is what u wanna do in the group? U picked 3 classes that are not soloers by default. I mean they all can solo , but there are much better choices for soloing. Do u want to dps , heal or mezz/dps? Also note that with ROk mobs hitting like crazy u better off with enchanter , my coercer was doing orange quests in ROK and helping classes that were 7-8 levels above him to kill mobs-) Of course that was before pet nerf but hey u never know. Troub will not survive soloing in ROK , defiler kill very slow and with 2 mobs beating on him it will be even slower. Also enchanters rock in T8 , some places enchanter is a must have.
