I am a returning Eq2 player after being off for about a year and a half with brief stints after Kos and Eof were released. I have a 35 Coercer, 29 troub, 29 Defiler, 24 Inq, and lower lvl TD versions of the top three to get a feel for the game again. I am still undecided on a main. I am looking for a class that can solo reasonably well, but is needed in groups. I have a life so my play time is limited to about 1 hr to 1 and a half sessions. Here are my likes and dislikes of each:

Troub - I love soloing with my troub. I feel free when I play him. I Love versatilty and I had a bard in EQ. However this is my weakes toon. I can barely take group pulls with this guy. In groups, I am wanted but I'm not THE MAN. Because they could easily function without me or what I bring is not that noticeable. Although, I was in a group in RoV that really appreciated me joining them and we had fun killing easy stuff.

Defiler - I like to help and heal. I thought this was a good compromise toon. I solo slow but can kill most anything eventually. Best to solo more than one mob at a time. I really enjoy him in groups as a healer. However, I can't get excited about this guy. I don't look forward to the next spells because they all seem boring. He gets repetitive soloing.

Coercer - This toon ruined the game for me. I can do almost anything on my coercer and I judge every toon by what I can do with him because he was my main when I started. Every other toon seems weak because it can't do what my coercer can. The problem is I die, alot on this guy. The class is so capricious and demands a micro manage mindset. Sometimes I just want to mow through mobs and not have to think and plan so much. He is great to awesome in groups and I am the most skilled with this class but I don't have good gear or Master charm. If he could wear leather and had a tad stronger nuke there would be no question as to my main.

With limited playtime and average to below average gear, I'm looking to concentrate on a toon to get to high levels that is versatile and fun.

with the limited playtime the coercer would be best or betray to illy so you have a unbreakable pet unless he dies, imho. I have an illy and coercer and enjoy the illy better. But like i said limmited playtime you will most likely be soloing a lot.

From a soloing standpoint, coercer is one of the best solo' classes from level 20-70. Defiler's will frustrate you solo game. I can't say anything about troub's.

I have a 80 coercer and it's easy to solo with. and fast.

Trouba becomes almost impossible to solo at higher lvls. The group gains are good but you loose solo gains.

Defiler is slow and it becomes harder to solo at higher lvls.

Another choise is bruiser or monk, they solo quite well

A defiler is a slow, and reliable soloer. You will get an aoe damage spell in the 50's, but not too much else exciting on the solo front as you level. It is much slower to solo in the 50s than it is in the 20s, so if he is slow and boring to you now I wouldn't recommend him to be your solo character to level up. This is just my own opinion of course, you will find other defilers that have managed a dps spec and do quite well, but they seem to be rather rare. On a positivie note, it is quite easy to find a group - really you just have to exist and take off /anon for a little bit. If my friends weren't on I would just head to the dungeon I wanted to go to and let a group pick me up.

If you can find even one regular person to duo with it will make a world of difference. My defiler is a joy to play in a duo or a full group - not so much in solo although she can live through quite a bit. I actually duo regularly with a troubador (quite a help to both of us) and he solos much faster than I do. He also dies a lot more, but overall he accomplishes a lot more with his soling than I do.

Have you dusted off your inquisitor yet? They have a battle cleric line that is supposed to be quite effective for solo play once you get enough aa to fill out the line.

Well, since you have a life, and can only play for 1-1.5 hours, I wouldn't go defiler. Nothing like getting in some where and having your healer bail out.

Looks like you might be doing more soloing than you think, so I would go with a conjuror. They have high dps in groups, and are needed. Also, you can be easily replaced when it is time for you to log off, and they are pretty fun to solo with. You could solo 1-80 if you wanted, easily.

Troub...meh

Coercer...meh
