Okay, started playing a Coercer and it was all fun and games in Timorous Deep. I loved playing there, the stuns, the power drains, it was great.

Then I go to Butcherblock off the Sharp Swallows....

I start by killing rust monsters. I get about 3 into it and I cast Hesitate...Resited! Okay, lets try Mez...Resited! Okay, lets try Silence...Resited! So about every three it went on like this and I thought these blue con level 20 rust monsters just had high resists even after I used my all magic debuff. So I wander on down the beach to the aquagoblin runts. My chains and stuff sorta start landing. I cast Silence and my gaze, completely drain the targets power and low and behold, the [Removed for Content] thing got a CA off while my silence was still in the maintained spell window so I know it had no power to cast. I thought it was a fluke and next thing I know the next one does it, two or three later it does it again! So finally I finished that quest and headed up twords Greater Fay entrance. Oh Snap! A wizard I can kill. First thing I cast, is my mez...Immune! Chains....Immune! Oh crap I'm dead. He didnt have mana shield on, because I was casting my spells on him and his health was dropping. Okay quest time, ignore the Q. I get the Kobold one. Kill 20 kobolds. Okay this will be fun I have a target group stun. Cast Ego Shock....hits 1 of them. They come right in close.....Group stun....hits 1 target (All I see is the graphic hit one of them, and in any given case a target group spell you will see the spell graphic hit all three). Okay now I'm ready to smash the keyboard. I can see my target encounter has the cool little circle below the mob and if you've ever gone near the entrance to Greater Fay you know that most of those are mob groups. So here I am getting killed over and over again because everything I cast is resisted, doesnt hit, or my power drains just arent working

Now I currently have all MC gear and adept 3's. My stats are maxed including subjacation, ordination, focus, disruption all of that (I checked). Now why the hell are blue con enemies resisting so much? It's as if I'm running App II's and I suck. [Removed for Content]? I'll even post my combat log in here if I have too. I can't believe a level 20 rust monster kicked my [Removed for Content] because out of the 12 spells I cast, 2 hit. And the pets what a joke.

It does get better.

I haven't played the lower levels of coercer since launch, and there have been many changes since then, but Coercers definitely have power bands. In the 3-20 range, you're almost impervious (most classes are in this range). From 20-32ish, it's a downward slope as you feel weaker every level. It starts to pick up again a bit in the mid 30's, and slowly ramps back up from there.

This is also a very frustrating class to play, we die a LOT. We die FAST. We die EASY.

We can still do some things that few if any other class can do. If I can root it, mez it, or stun it, I can kill it. It may take an hour (literally), we may have to take 10-20 tries before figuring out the tactic that works. But it is possible.

Which is, of course, why we eat so much nerf.

Even if you end up deciding that you don't like the class, it's a fun one to pull out when the rest of the game seems easy. Some folks have to use lower level gear to feel a challenge, I just play Coercer =)

I'm not sure what to say about the resists - that seems pretty abnormal (I took the same path TM to BB not too long ago). I'd stick with it and I don't believe you'll see that very often. I found hitting 23 and getting Sibyllant really made things dramatically easier for what it's worth.

Zeebs

Don't forget to drop 5 AA's into charm on your coercer tree as well. You could also put some points into efficiency to beef up your control spells. Also the AGI line is nice for spamming spells faster in a pinch.

If you stick with it you'll get past the kill streaks that pop up once in a while. In my experience certain types of mobs resist a lot... mostly reptilian, mages and spiders for me. Those types of mobs tend to resist more and break charm easier. Of course I'm sure my luck factors in there a bit.

Grab any +subj gear you can and raise your subj cap and you'll see some improved reliability. You will continue to fund the mender's retirement fund, but you'll get the rhythm of things as you get more of your spells in higher levels. I found getting Spell Whip and Psychic Wail made my life quite a bit easier personally. The AoE fear is mainly good for distracting a mob so I can high-tail it out of dodge.

CHARM ONE OF THESE WISPS!

Now you are all set to OWN! type in the command "/pet ranged". Your strategy will be root and make pet attack. If your pet is not doing close to 1k damage with each cast .....then you got a dud and should get rid of him/her and get another. Don't bother with the wisps near the druid rings as they suck for pets.

Not being nekkid and having other masters and ad3's will allow you to help your pet a bit if you like pushing buttons as most coercers seem to do. I also started in TD and had lots of fun, and yes, it did get harder when I moved over to Butcher...then again at that point I also started boxing him with my monk. He's currently level 46 with 52 AA and I can't get enough of him! My second account is full of nothing but healers that I used to box with my Monk, and this is the first mage I've used to box with. I was a little worried about boxing since i'm used to using healers but wow....I can box as easy and in some cased easier then with my healers. Anyway....back to my question: Does this command work with charmed pets? I've read the forums on how to solo with my Coercer and I've only seen posted about "yo-yo'ing" your pet. If so, i'm really excited to try this.

/pet ranged and /pet melee work fine with charmed pets. I have a couple of macros set up for each so I can toggle them easily. If you just want to back the pet off, use the peace button to make them run back toward you... good for pet pulling. Attack (as long as they're set to melee) will make them run to the target. If they're set to ranged they will *usually* remain where they are and nuke. Sometimes they'll do wierd things in rough terrain and run up anyway. I've found that using the anchor command to pin them in a good pull spot and then luring the mobs in before rooting them helps a bit... at least if you're hanging around in one place for a while.
