I was able to get this working with out reinstalling the OS. I went to the ATI site and downloaded 7.2 drivers located in the "Previous Catalyst drivers" section, here is a link:

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/...revious-xp.html

I did not have to use any special uninstall utility I just went to the control panel, I am adding some direction for those who don't know how to do this.

1. Download and save 7.2 drivers on your desktop: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/...revious-xp.html

2. Now go to Start>Control Panel

3. A new window will open, Double click Add and remove programs

4. A new window will appear, find ATI drivers and or ATI catalyst uninstaller, something close to that. Just uninstall anything having to do with your video card. Note: when I say anything I don't mean games etc...

5. Now that you have uninstalled your video drivers, windows will ask you to reboot, do so.

6. Now Double click the 7.2 drivers located on your desktop, restart when asked.

7. Upon reboot start game and enjoy.

Side note:

If you have an ATI card I believe down revving your driver will fix the Unrecoverable error issue. I have not tried all drivers, I have 7.2 working. I have tested 8.2, 7.10 and these did not work. I have also tried reinstalling the OS, using the DirectX provide by the eq2 RoK CD, using the 7.10 as well as testing the drivers from windows update. I have done quite a bit of testing with no luck. My system is currently using the latest DirectX and 7.2 Catalyst drivers. I know that I have repeated my self; I just want to be clear. If you find a more recent driver that works please post it. Its funny I have been working on this system for my son and his system is now playing eq2 better then my vista64, 4 gig, 8800, striped monster machine, Now to fix it!!
