<p>regarding when / what frequency an anti-virus updates itself is strictly up to you.  If you do not / choose not to switch the settings on ANY software, then it will default itself to do it automatically.  That is no fault of the software, only the user.</p><p>As for which to get, i recommend Norton over any of the others.  But just get the Anti-virus.</p><p>****   This one  ****</p><p><img src="http://atl.img.digitalriver.com/v2.0-img/operations/symantus/site/promo/pd/images/boxshot-nav08.png" border="0" alt="" width="128" height="156" /></p><p>Don't get the Internet Security or the All-in-One Internet Security</p><p>**** NOT THESE ****</p><p><img src="http://atl.img.digitalriver.com/v2.0-img/operations/symantus/site/promo/pd/images/boxshot-nis08.png" border="0" alt="" width="141" height="156" /> or <img src="http://atl.img.digitalriver.com/v2.0-img/operations/symantus/site/promo/pd/images/US/boxshot-360.png" border="0" alt="" width="133" height="156" /></p><p>You'll get more crap on your machine taking up resources then you'll ever care to have...</p><p>The pure Anti-Virus software works just fine and you can adjust the settings to update when you want it to rather then automatically.</p>

I wouldn't ever recommend Norton's to anyone. In my experience its the most resource heavy program out there and misses a lot of virii. I've used Norton's previously and wouldn't go back to it. McAfee isn't much better, but is slightly better. I'd recommend AVG either the free version or the commercial version, both are the same product, just the commercial version has more options of what you can do with it. Just my opinion of course and YMMV.

Norton imbeds itself into your system so much so that you can never really completely get rid of it if you wanted to. I would call it a virus myself. Unfortunately, none of the major virus protection programs do their jobs very well. There are several write ups about Norton, McAfee, and TrendMicro. What is common in all of them is they catch the viruses (7 were imbedded into test comp), but they can never clean or completely fix the problem. they just "quarantine" them. TrendMicro would even say it caught more viruses than the testers actually put on the system. I would read up about what is the best. PcWorld has their top 10. I currently use McAfee. It is livable but i disable when running eq2.

AVG is free and unobtrusive, and if I were to install an anti virus on my machine, it would be that one.

I use trend Micro, but going to be migrating to Kasparsky when my subscription is up. Trend is a great program but they are tending to go the route of Norton and adding way to much bloatware into their product.

Thank-you.I would not have gone the Norton route as I still have bits and pieces of old installs on my desktop that I cannot get rid of.McC and AVG look good. I think I will look into those. Thanks for the help.

One I've used for a while thats never given me any problems would be avast. The home version is free  updates are small  and you can uninstall it without issue if a problem ever comes up.
