the threads are old. is it still a mystic or would a defiler be better? and for those of you doing a monk and defiler, is it a logistical nightmare maintaining two chars from two diff factions at the same time? (two diff hometowns and all)
Once you hit high teens/low 20's, you will be using boats to get to zones, so easy to meet up with toons from different cities, unless you play PvP of course

Either a mystic or a defiler would be fine. You might also want to consider a fury as an option, as these also work well with monks.

thank you for the responses.

my two box scenario so far is a level 24 monk and 23 mystic. working well. still cant take heroic blue mobs that have the three up arrows in crushbone earlier. monk just gets beat down and the wards cant keep up even though the monk is sporting 44% avoidance. mobs seem to never miss. 4/4/8 in str now and my auto attack dmg is higher than my ca's for the most part heh. should i keep going str now or perhaps move on to int?

You need that avoidance up a lot higher, 50-60%.I'd suggest checking the class specific thread for mystic advice if I were you as there's loads of great advice there (including where to spend AA early, then re-spec etc).

Taken from another thread .....Strayslayer@Butcherblock wrote:

I may be the exception here as I am fully mastercrafted/mastered/ad3/half adorned and have previous experience on a higher level monk.

Personally I went 44862 int and am 4443 wis with 41 AA at level 35. I prefer the weapons because I can't stand having that loss of stats, health, power and possible adornment options. Just this tier I switched from the heal proc on my weapons to the +def adornment for 1 handed crushing. And still while tanking I notice on my parses I'm usually about twice as high as another similar equipped, similar level monk I group with in guild who went the str route.

I will always say go with the weapons over bare handed, but then again, I have the higher level cash flow that many don't. I've seen a lot more new players to the game recently than I have over the last few years. There's nothing wrong with saving your money for: 1) the next tier, 2) higher level masters 3) tradeskilling by going with the str route, personally it's not for me. I can spend 10 plat on my level 32, 42, 52 monk for upgrades and make it back in a few hours easily enough to where it doesn't affect me much.

Until I see someone able to outtank and outDPS me or out solo me going the bare fisted way I won't switch.

So maybe INT is the way to go!For me I have based my decisions on a defensive basis, in that I have placed my AA in AGI (to avoid being hit, to increase defense and to get the save ally) and in the Monk tree to max Walk Like a Mountain and the heal. I figured the longer I can remain upright the better it would be for me solo and for groups. The monk quoted above has clearly opted for causing as much damage as possible as quickly as possible so the mob fall before he does. With all these decisions I'd suggest there is no right or wrong, there is just flexibility in the choices available. But if you are wandering around with a healer the whole time then maybe you should aim for more DPS.One thing to remember is that you can always respec if you want to try something different OR if the line you really want doesn't offer the reward you are after until a lot of points are spent. So, for example if you decided you wanted INT just for the crit chance you could start off spending 8 points in AGI and then respec to INT once you get the 9th AA point, if you see what I mean.Anyway, thought I'd come back and add this information to my previous answer as it seems to support your original decision.
