I know that it used to give you less XP before they changed it.  They did a change so now, if you get less then pristine, you get part of your supplies back.  I am not positive on how this effects potions/poisons as I always get pristine on my alchy.  If you gain pristine, you use less raws that way.  So more XP and use less raws sounded great to me...
