View Full Version : Horrible performance

OS: Windows XP Pro SP2CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (3.0GHz) GPU: 8800 GTS 512MB (G92 chip)RAM: 2GB DDRII 800MHz HDD: 250GB 7200RPMPSU: 600WI had recently set up a subscription to EQ2 on this account after spending some time on Vanguard with one of my other accounts on this newly built PC. I was a little bit disappointed with the performance I had been getting on Vanguard after reading about how the game had supposedly been improved since it launched, but starting up on EQ2, I had faced some of the same problems as I did on Vanguard. EQ2's performance on my PC is as bad, if not worse then Vanguards (getting an overall lower frame rate on EQ2 with less objects in my view and having strange graphical anomalies occur). I am unable to run EQ2 at Extreme Quality or Very High Quality, but the game barely passes for playable on High Quality (the performance on High Quality is about 1-4 frames better then Extreme Quality, not much of an improvement for such a radical decrease in visuals (while soloing I am at about 15-50 frames, while in towns (I have only been to Freeport) I am at about 10-30 frames and I haven't had the pleasure of a party yet so I can't give a frame average, although I am sure it would be wonderful)). If I have absolutely nothing on my screen with tweaked (toned-down (particle effects off, shadows off, flora off)) High Quality settings I can maybe get 50 frames, but as soon as one, or two character models appear on my screen my FPS jumps down to either the low 30s or high 20s regardless of it's just them, me and a wall on my screen. There are also a few graphical anomalies that occur with both the water in the game and the shadows, such as reflections not appearing properly in the water (reflections that would appear in one camera angle would suddenly be gone if I slightly twitch my camera angle to another side, or when an objects reflection just rapidly flickers around in the water) and on the rare instances I have all of the boxes checked on shadows, shadow images will constantly flicker on my screen (similar to what the water does, where I would see a shadow on the ground in one camera angle, but if I where to twitch my camera angle ever-so-slightly the shadow would start to flicker on/off the screen (even with the off-screen shadows options on this still occurs)). I am not sure this this performance is normal for my setup, but I have done pretty much anything I could think of to fix the problem (reinstalled the latest drivers to everything, defragged my hard drive, ran some stress test programs to see if the fault was with the PC, changing the video control panel settings to favor performance (AA/AF off, Vsync/triple buffering off, video settings set to high performance)) and really can't think of anything else. Was hoping to be able to get some performance help from the forums, so any help that can be provided will be greatly appreciated.

There have been many issues with the 8800 series of cards, you can do a search on the forum here and find plenty of info and some workarounds for some issues,I do not understand the inconsistency between users. Some that are running EQ2 with 8800 have no problems, some have few minor, some have major issues, there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. I am sorry I don't have the answer you are seeking, but just a bit of searching may shed some light on your problem.

Thanks for the response! I had actually looked through the forums quite thoroughly for a fix to the problem, but I wasn't able to find anything that could help, my frame rate was still lower then it should of been. I am not sure if any of my hardware is to blame, but after running a few stability tests, I didn't see any problems occur. I am also sure that over heating is probably not the issue as my idle CPU temp is 35-37C while the GPU is 58-61C and load CPU temp is 45-47C and GPU is 73-76C (I recorded the load temps while four hours in on Vanguard/EQ2 maxed out (as unplayable as they both were)). Really I am at a loss, I can't think of anything else that should get my performance up to what it should be.

Give the latest beta drivers a try, 169.28. They seem to reduce a lot of the hitching and are very stable, not perfect, but better.

Appreciate the reply Ravinex! I actually don't have to many issues with hitching in EQ2 (as low as the frame rate gets, the game rarely stutters (but that's probably because it's harder to tell the difference between 10FPs dropping down to 5FPs then it is 60FPS dropping to 5FPS)), but I went and got the beta driver and it did improve the little amounts of stuttering that I did get by a bit. I also went ahead and tried that AA trick (forcing AA in the video control panel so that EQ2 goes more GPU-centric then having to rely on the CPU) someone mentioned in a thread near this one, but instead of the performance going up, it went even lower so meh to me. In my spare time, I had the chance to make a temporary Sarnark alt and see how my performance fared in the ROK areas, needless to say it was worse then it was on my main. With Extreme Quality on its default settings, I was going as low as 4 FPS (in the small encampment north of the Sarnark starting area) to about 15-25 FPS (looking directly at about 3 of the bird NPCs a little bit forward of the Sarnark starting area, with just me, them and the ground in view), which is funny because this is the exact same performance I was getting with my old machine (8600 GTS OC 256MB, AMD 3800+, 2GB of DDR1(yes, 1) RAM) when I tried to run Extreme Quality in the Qeynos Harbor starting area with my Human, ~$1500 later and no performance increase... yes... funny... *dies*. The only playable performance (majority of the time) that I can get is if I have my game either on decreased High Quality or on default Balanced settings (on Balanced in towns, it still occasionally goes into the ~20 FPS area). It really is quite sad, the game is very enjoyable when my eyes aren't bleeding from the horrible performance, but it seems that unless I can somehow find a miracle fix, I am going to be out $100 for both Vanguard and EQ2.

Ok, you also need to kill all of the shadows, that makes the difference between 5fps and 50fps. AA will decrease performance, but get rid of the jagged lines. I think if you would just kill the shadows you'll find good performance. Give it a shot before you give up!

Tried the shadow thing you suggested and in the ROK areas I went from about 5FPS to 15FPS, and in areas outside of ROK I went from about 20FPS to around 30... while soloing in an open terrain with only a few monsters off in the distance with flora off as well, unfortunately still an unplayable performance . I guess my machine, like many others, just doesn't rub the EQ2 engine the right way.

Huh thats really weird cause I'm almost running an identical system to you and getting great results on almost maxxed out graphics. I hope you figure it out someday, GL!

just a suggestion:

if you two find out the difference in your systems (if they are really almost identical) this might be a very good shot at the source of the problem.

If you can work out what is different in your 2 systems that could help the others with the same problem alot i assume.

I myself bought an 8800 GTX shortly after release and had to return it as the game became completely unplayable with the "better" card. I tried everything that was on the board - but gave up after 2 weeks.

I`d still like to improve my graphics or switch to a new system this year but i wouldnt try it again with an 8800 after that experience and no clue on what causes the problem.
