I am a 4 year vet. to EQ2, but quit after 6 months of playing, then start up again after 6 months of off time. In saying that I am a vet for that long, I only have ever played a paladin past 25 and I have had many pallies 50+. This is because I want to play a class that does his damage with his weapon and CA's, but can heal himself to keep on with the fight. I am looking at the mystic class because I was a hardcore shaman in EQ1, and was wondering how they stack up soloing and in a group.

I really don't want to ever have to be relied on to keep a group alive, other then taking the damage and aggro by myself (hence pally), but I like when soloing to heal myself if in a pinch (i.e no beserker or guardian). So was wondering on 2 parts. Do I do enough melee damamge to not have a tremendous downtime after each fight, and when in a group will I ever have to be main healer, or really even a back up healer (would not mind casting the buff on the tank before each battle). So there we go, I can answer any question on how I play to help give any information

Melee speced mystics can solo quite decently and don't really need a group to kill things.

Of course, as a shaman if you do decide to group you will always be welcome.

No one looks for a mystic if they are looking for DPS. So if you are not looking to heal in a group setting a mystic is not the right class for you

You need about 43 AAs to max out the combat arts and get 100% critical hits. Makes soloing a breeze. We used to be one of the most painfully slow classes to solo in the game. Whatever class you play, to max out early AA gain and get the best starter gear go to Gorowyn at level 1, jump off the docks and go north to the griffon station there (avoid town it's a pita). Take the griffon to the newbie area (Not Mok Rent, the other option) and do the quest lines there. Easiest way to do this is as a good aligned character is to start in qeynos hail the captain on the boat, take the carpet to SS from QH and then take the carpet to butcherblock. Run up the beach to the griffon to Gorowyn.

We are usually the primary healers in a group, so as others said, groups will expect that out of you.

Try shadowknights. They're much better at soloing than pallies and no one ever asks them for a heal.

No group in their right mind would accept a mystic on board as anything other than a healer in some capacity. We can DPS but if a group wants DPS then we are NOT what they would be looking for. EQ2 mystics are not like eq1 shaman. We are main healers. Period.
