There's a sticked post in this forum section about EQ2 and Vista. Try reading it and seeing if the hints and tips sort out your issues. If they don't post again but supply more details as explained in the post at the top of the forum:http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=353617

It would help if you explain in more detail exactly what is occurring when you attempt to run the game, including th msinfo and dxdiag for the system.

The security model used in vista is completely different then the one in previous OS's, it s lot more strict the XP or 2k. Because of this, it takes some work to get applications that are updated frequently to run properly.

If you have installed eq2 in the ..Program Files directory try this first:

Keep in mind that this helps the MAJORITY of the people, but it may not help everyone with vista.

first, locate the following files.LP_plugin.exeEQ2.exeEverQuest2.exe

then for each one, right click them and then choose properties. from there you should see a button to "run as administrator" or something similar, i am not at my vista machine, so i cant remember exactly. in that window, look down it, and a little ways down, you will see a checkbox that does the same thing, but when checked, it runs each time the app is run and does not require you to do it each time it is run. also, there is a checkbox for the compatibility options. check that checkbox, and then make sure it is set to windows xp SP2 in the drop down just underneath it. it defaults to xp SP2, but i am just covering all the bases. then, if there is a button at the bottom of the window that says "apply" click it, then click ok. if there is no "apply" button, then just click ok.

now, when you run from the shortcut on the desktop, you do not need to set it to run as admin every time you start it, and you should not have the LP_plugin error any longer either.

also, it is a good idea to right click the station and EQ2 folders under sony in Program Files, and make sure the folder permissions for read-only is not checked. this will allow the patcher and the launcher to write patches to the folders if patches need to be done.

Personally I use a second method on all 3rd party applications outside of the ones published by Microsoft

1. Create a directory outside of Program Files - I call it ..apps_3rd

2. inside of that I created a ..games directory

3. inside of this directory goes all the games I install, eq,eq2,swg,mo,lon,pirates, etc

4. I installed the eq2 to ..apps_3rdgameseq2

5. After the game is installed I did the steps I posted earlier

Another method that is used, while quick and dirty, and sometimes works, is to turn off the UAC - but do this at your own risk, you need to evaluate the impact on your own system before turning off the security model in Vista. Turnig it off can cause some applications/drivers that are coded to interface with the UAC to exhibet unpredictable results, not to mention you are disabling th main security functions in the OS.

5.

Thanks for the replies so far... I will try it... But why is SOE selling a retail Box which tells you that vista is compatible? From my point it looks like a bit of handwork to get it run. When I read the requirement on any other Box, there is no Handwork needed. Otherwise, if i cant get it run under vista, ill go a step forward and use XP .......

Maybe wine under Linux will work too

If you read the net you will see that the special handling is not restricted to eq2, there are a multitude of games out there that have ot be handled the same way, yet they also require special install instructions. Compatible and certified are two different terms in regards to applications and Vista

Matte of opinion as to a step forward or backward for the OS, converted all equipment over to Vista over a 14 months ago and have not even thought about going back to XP, the systems run a lot more stable and the UAC has stopped a lot of issues that are normally caused by my kids and some of their "kid written" websites.

Wine and Linux - there is a huge thread concerning how to get EQ2 to run in that environment, if you are upset about the hoops you need to go through to get it to run under Vista, then that project is not for you unless you are well versed in the OS environment. Have a test box running in that environment, can;t say that I am overly impressed with it, but then it is a sandbox/playgorund environment for me.

Na... i got some experience with Linux.... working with several distros sinde 1999.... and the was a time where i had build patches for wine (had to gave it up cause its very time stealing)... Getting it run under linux will be easier for me than getting it run under Vista

I use windows only for Games i play that are 100% not wine/cedega Compatible.

I went back to XP and the Game works fine out of the box. Without handwork

For me Vista is a Playground...a small and well bad build one (except of the used Linux technologies in Vista....yes, Microsoft did it)

Thanks for the help Guys
