This sounds like a router type issue to me.Try doing a power cycle on both your modem and your router. Unplug both of them, and wait for about 10 seconds, and plug them both back in. Wait a few minutes and try the game again. If that doesn't work, take a look at the router's port forwarding setup and make sure everything is set the way it should be. For information on which ports to use, click here. It's possible that it could be any type of security software too, anti-virus or firewall software slowing things down. Try making sure nothing is hindering your connection here. Add the game and/or directory to your software's exception list, or try turning it off for the duration of these tests.

I've seen this issue before, in fact I have it every single time EQ2 patches (which is like twice a week). It will always hang on a "decompressing file" portion of it.Then as an added bonus, once it hangs on this you can't easily close the window, you have to minimize the launcher, then X it out. Even after you X it out, launcher.exe stays active and locked in processes. If you try to end process from task manager it Fails, it WILL NOT terminate. To top it off, when you try to restart/reboot, your system will hang for like 8 minutes while windows tries to terminate the process that can't be stopped. So you either have to wait for ever, or just manually hit the Reset button. I have tried patching when every process I can think of is disabled first (I've had task manager down to like 15 process in XP pro) and I still run into the issue. All I know for certain is its not a router issue. It work just find before RoK. I Had been playing Echoes of Faydwar for a few months prior to RoK and had no issues patching at all.

I'm having this problem as well. I've recently decided to come back to the game, and decided to pick up the RoK box so as to have access to all of the content I've missed out on while away. The game installs just fine, but as the last poster mentioned, I begin to experience problems once the launcher attempts to update. It will scan all of the files and begin to download updated content, but it will always hang when it begins to decompress a file.Again, just as the last poster mentioned, the launcher locks up at this time. You can click cancel, but it doesn't actually cancel. You can leave it sitting, but after having let it run while doing errands for a few hours today, I can see that this will do no good. You can right-click and close the launcher this way, as it does not respond to clicks upon the x in the window itself, but the process itself remains in memory. Even using the task manager and attempting to manually terminate the launchpad, it lingers on and refuses to close. Rebooting the system takes several minutes, as I assume Windows is trying all manner of tricks to dump this nasty piece of work from memory before it can shut down.I've attempted to remove all traces of the program and reinstall three times now. I've checked the HDD and RAM both for errors, I've tried defrags, and in short, I've tried all of the 'solutions' that you guys mention in your FAQs, all to no avail. I even went so far as to pretend it might be a router problem, but that's not at all the case. I get the same issue whether I'm using a router, using a router with this machine set DMZ, or using this machine connected straight to the cable modem. Same issue, every time. I've also tried to run tracerts after reading about the AOL folk having trouble with their updates, but I have no problems with that, as all traces complete without error, even when attempting to reach the problem servers mentioned in that thread.Seriously, this is kind of ridiculous. I remember dreading every expansion release back in the old EQ1 days, as you guys would break all sorts of things whenever the new content hit, and it seems that this proud tradition continues to this day. Judging by the other complaints I see here, these issues only began after RoK was released, so I ask you, SOE... what's going on here? It's not like we're asking for miracles or favors here. All we want is to be able to connect and play the game we've paid for. Heck, I couldn't even experience this wonderful error until after I paid for a subscription that allowed me to get as far as the patcher, and now that money is right down the tube. Please, either give me a solution or point me in the right direction for getting my money back. Thanks.

I've since noticed that the launcher for Star Wars Galaxies does the same thing too. It's definitely an issue related to however Sony has their patchers set up to operate, but bugger if I can figure out what's going on here. One thing you may wish to try is to reboot into safe mode with networking enabled and patch the game there, then reboot into normal mode to actually play. The earlier poster in this thread said elsewhere that this worked for him, although I haven't had luck with it just yet. Perhaps he's on to something, though.

I did have luck with the Reboot in Safe Mode with Networking method. Its still pretty agitating. I suspect the problem is with an update made to the launcher in the past few months or so. I don't play any of the other SOE games currently so I don't know if it happens with them as well or just EQ2: RoK.I did find that disabling everything in task manager, startup ect... doesn't make it work in normal mode. Even with Firewalls, Antivirus, updaters, printers ect all disabled and removed from process, it still plays the "hang on decompress" game.

Permissions have nothing to do with this problem. For another thing, I have no interest in the Station Launcher. There's no reason why the original launchers for their games shouldn't work. Rather than jump through hoops to come up with workarounds, I'll instead look to SOE to fix their problem. If they decide that it's not worth their time, I can easily take my money elsewhere and once again let my account fall into hibernation for years. Thanks for trying to offer suggestions, though. It's appreciated.

Part of the problem is, no one posts if the resolution works, or if they find something else that works. I bet there are 20 threads throughout tech support forum that are basically "launcher broke, play button doesn't come up, updates not working" and so forth. Everyone of them is then followed up by a post from tech support that says"sounds like a router issue"which of course is sort of like calling Dell for tech support and getting "Ben" to tell you in a thick accent "have you tried rebooting, i'm hearing this is a very common mistake?"I would help if there were enough details to determine if these problems/threads are actually related, and find out what does and doesn't work. I don't think its a hardware router issue at all, but I think something changed with the launcher in the past 3 months, that something in networking doesn't like very much, so it hangs.
