If I wanted to make a Mystic that had good damage in both casting and melee would it be a more efficient killer than one fully speced for casting or one fully speced for melee? What would the AAs look like?

You generally won't want to use casting and melee in the same battle as they share timers (the melee Combat Arts you get in the mystic Combat AA tree directly replace individual damage spells). The other problem is to maximum melee damage you want a high STR, while to maximize spell damage you want high INT. Generally, you are going to have to give up some of one to get the other. Fortunately, Mystics self-buff for significant STR which helps those that go down the melee route. (NOTE: INT helps melee mystics as well through improving DoT damage and damage from procs, but not as much as STR helps). As well, you are going to want to get +CA or +spell damage equipment, as well as +heal and most items don't have all three. For melee, the most important AAs are the Shaman AGI line which includes 100% melee crits and the Mystic Combat line which gives you combat arts to replace each of your spells and includes skill bonuses and a pet boost at the end of the line.

So then which is better? Full out melee?

Considering the amount mystics self buff str & the lack of much self buff for int, the aa choices we have I think a spell casting mystic would be hard pressed to dish out as much damage as a melee mystic is capable of in general.

There are of course situations where spell casting is better for your survival but still ...

There are mystics that mix and match with aa's to get a bit of the stuff from the INT line as well, but I personally chose not to go that route.

All that being said the Kunark gear seems awfully swayed towards the spellcaster (though you can find + combat art gear, it's far less likely to have + healing on it as the + spell damage gear).
