I've played a warlock for a while, but now I want to make a wiz alt (i know the basic diffrence, lock is the encouter ae type thing, wiz is nuker single target type thing, so don't start getting "which is better" thing).I'm wondering...How important is spell upgrade for a wiz?(on warlock I went to 29 w/o upgrades). Is it true theres some "dead zone" of levels in the 40's where people dislike wiz?(sounded odd)If I come across an encounter, can a wiz handle decently? Are there levels where I my spells are a bit weak until I get upgrades? (saw a wiz around lv 10 with his spells not dealing a much damage)Are they as fun as warlocks? (I would assume yes? <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> )Note: I want to hear from people who have either played both or Wizard, as I've heard from many warlocks in other places.Thank you.

Wizards are actually pretty high AE damage classes as well even though people do not think of that. they have 2 encounter AEs and a nice PBAoE, an AE pet and a hugh hitting 3 target cone AE. Groups are really not a problem with wizards.

If you want to get by with the bare min of upgradeing spells, then only upgrade your roots and then the ball of fire spell line which you get at master 2 with your t3 choice.

Wizards i think get much easier to play in the 40s as you get a group root that stacks with your single target root, btu here is where the wiz spells seem to be lacking as your ball of fire line isnt upgraded and all the other classes seem to be gaining on you in terms of dps, then 50 htis and you get Ice comet and all is well from that point foward.

Yes Wiz is a fun class to play imho.

It's even better if you go the Agi line to get the noticable reductions in casting time and re-cast. Ice Comet has quite a long cast time, but now it's quite usable in regular parties for me.

I have both warlock and wizard, though neither is 80. Warlock has better ae, though wizard does indeed have ae as well, but warlock ae is far better. Warlock gets better dots too, so wizard needs to nuke nuke while warlock can dot and hope root holds. Chances are it wont hold but... the dots are better.

All in all, I think the warlock is the more powerful character, but I havent taken either all the way.

I'm curious how others perceive these classes. A LOT has changed over the two years since I raised warlock. My current character is wizard, but I'm missing some of the warlock abilities. On the other hand, the current expansion has almost eliminated the linked pulls a warlock depends on, so there is unhappiness in the warlock house.

I absolutely LOVE playing a wizard. It is a fun class IMHO! ON single mob encounters, you have a great arsenal of fire power. As mentioned above, you also have some very effective AE options, especially once you get your group root. I know the AE and group spells are not as good as a warlock, but your ability to drill mobs with high damage nukes is very fun, and very effective. Mixed with almost ANY class as a partner, you can bring down mobs faster than they know what hit them, and then move onto the next encounter.

As for your specific questions:

Spell upgrade at lower levels shouldn't be wasted beyond your root, and possibly main or secondary nuke spell. Unless you harvest a lot, and become a sage, it IS NOT worth the coin investment. On the other hand, if you do harvest and have a sage, it is nice. I didn't bother upgrading ANY spells until I was higher level, and I had NO problems with my wizard.

Up to 40, I always felt very capable, and was able to deliver a great deal of damage compared to others I was grouped with (and that was without upgrading ANY spells). Through my 40's, many other dps classes seemed to catch up. I felt that aa's, spell upgrades, and leveling through my 50's began setting me apart again from a dps perspective.

I find a wizard to be a very effective solo class as long as follow a few basic principles...keep root up...keep damage flying as fast as possible (both of these things you can do and do well as a wizard).

Well, that is my two cents on your post. Give it a try, and see what you think. I know that for me, a wizard is a lot of fun.
