Well I've just bought the game for the first time and decided to play a Swashbuckler. It's my very first character - I know nothing....nothing I tell you!

However, I've been doing alot of reading and see this advice on the forums: "harvest the appropriate rares for your class".

As a level 1 Swashbuckler who is also going to be a zone-leading Alchemist in later life, what are my approrpriate rares?

Thank you in advance good people of Norrath!

You asked two questions there . . . and you didn't even know it.1. As a Swashbuckler, you will need Loam's of various flavors (depends on your level) to make spell and combat arts upgrades for yourself.2. As an Alchemist, you can use Loams to make combat art and spell upgrades for Fighters. You also use Dusts to make rare potions and poisons for various classes. As an Alchemist, you will NOT be making spell and combat art upgrades for your Swashbuckler. If you want to make your own spell and combat art upgrades, you'll need to be a Jeweler.

For T1 and T2 harvests (when examined, will say "1-9" and "10-19" on the tool tips), I highly recommend harvesting everything in sight! To get to level 10, using the little quests given at the tradeskill area, you'll be asked to make items using all basic tradeskill professions. This is to give you a (very) small taste of what's to come. When you reach level 10, you first pick which archetype you'd like to strive on, before being allowed to select Alchemist, which is level 20. Even after you become an Alchemist, though, I still suggest harvesting what you see. The reason for this is, even if you don't get the rare you want, you have a chance at getting a rare you can either sell on the broker or trade for rares you'll be needing : )A really great resource is EQ2 Traders: forums, guides and just about anything else tradeskill related you'd ever want to know ;p

Is it required to do tradeskills? I'm also leveling up a Swashbuckler, and I got to like level 15 in the Scholar tree, but I just find it really boring. Am I going to be at a major disadvantage if I choose not to tradeskill?

Thanks

I just dropped 28 tailoring and after a few days off and on, I'm now a 25 provisioner : )

However, you're going to be stuck either paying for your spell/combat art upgrades outright, or you can still harvest the rares you need for the Adept 3 versions (or regular for the App 4 version) and hope to find an accomodating jeweler to make them for you at a discount (they generally will for fuel cost and a tip, but it can be rather frustrating finding one to do so at times.)

I leveled two characters to 80 before I decided to do any serious tradeskilling. Now I have three L80 characters, 2 L80 tradeskillers and 2 capped secondary tradeskills.
