Which one is best these days? I seem to remember defense was the one to go for back in the day. Is this still the case?

if u are a bruiser i would say parry just because ur chance to riptose is based on whether u parry or not. Otherwise go deflection cause both parry and deflection work on epics while defense really for the most part is negated. if u dont plan on tanking epics then it dont really matter. and if thing stay the same bruisers really shouldn't be tanking in RoK at this point in time. but maybe the devs will come to their senses or one of them might actually play a brusier in a raid guild in RoK or something. shrug

Denubis

Saints of Norrath

Blackburrow

Well for one, bruisers can tank just fine in RoK.... [Removed for Content] fine.

Now, to answer the OP's question, as far as avoidance% as it shows up in your window, defense will give you the most, followed by deflection, and lastly parry. Parry is nice though as it gives you your ripostes, and therefore more stoneskin chances. I would try to boost your deflection first and foremost however, because in a raid setup, nobody is boosting your deflection except you. Defense is so commonly boosted in raids that you shouldn't have a problem capping it, and parry gets a nice boost from your dirge.

Deflection first, then parry after that. it should all even out.

Thanks for the answers gentlemen. I'm unlikely to be tanking raids in the foreseeable future (for various reasons) and so my question should probably have asked which is better for soloing, group tanking or, my real area of interest, PvP.

I have tanked Crypt of Agony about a dozen times and it seems defense is still the best. It can be tanked in offensive stance just fine if you keep your defense modifiers up to about 400. After that there is no noticeable gain. There seems to be a soft cap at about 400/400/400 for defense/parry/deflection for a level 80 bruiser.

I would love to be proven wrong but atm i dont think our class is possible of tanking that mob. this differs from the last two expansions where we could tank any encounter really in the game, ie avatars, or tarinax in KoS. i guess maybe once they nerf silverwing we might have a chance at it. otherwise i agree with what crabbok said above parry is ur best friend cause of stone skin proc which are life savers for u but also if u arent tanking which u likely wont be, u can proc the stone skin if ur avoid is on the tank and u can interecede with the stone skin taking the dmg. hence 24k intercedes that dont hurt u on hard mobs. deflection is obviously what u want to pump next. just my two cents
