Is it better for Mystics to use spears? Or are we fine with a 1 handed blunt ... mace, hammer etc etcsorry but I am new and am just curious.

I've always liked using spears, mostly from a look standpoint, though seems that +piercing skill mods were a little more easily acquired being same armor type as scouts. That aside, there's no real bonus.

The one thing that was completely distinctive (and class defining) were spears for Shamans.  SoE made sure we did not have that in EQ2.  There are very very few Spear like weapons that are good for us, and almost all them are fable weapons.  To highlight the disparity look at all the HQ's  -- you will notice that out 30+ HQ not one spear or piercing weapon at ALL! That's why we all have to resort to 2H crushing weapon or 1H crushing weapons.

I just levelled to 79 as a woodworker and can make mahogany pikes which mystics can use, unlike all the previous tier pikes (unless they changed it recently).  It has a 90 damage rating -- think it is 90-270 damage.EDIT: I just checked the level 72 mahogany (70 redwood) pike is usable by mystics, defilers, berserkers, paladins, guardians and shadowknights.  The level 60/62 ones are not usable by mystics and defilers.  The 50/52 and below are only usable by berserkers and guardians.

Think it was tailored for shaman.

There are worthwhile spears for Mystics, but most are at the upper levels.  I don't know if you can still quest for Aurora's Spear of Mysticism or not, but back in the day that was one of the last spears available (early / mid 20's).There are more options in T7 and more still in T8.
