I just started myself but what I have found is that past Apprentice 2 you can buy the upgrades from players off the broker and some are loot. Sorry I cant be more specific , I still have questions myself about this.

Like I noticed (example) the spell rot at App1 only increases in strength by 1 point at App2 and pretty much the same thing for App3. So im wondering why even bother upgrading if the upgrade will be almost nothing. Unless you NEED to in order to get the Adept and higher spells.

Welcome to EQ2 Spell upgrades work like this: Apprentice I - Basic version, given automatically (until level 50, after that you have to buy all your spells) Apprentice II - Bought from your class trainer Apprentice III - Previously crafted, but since the crafting changes, I don't think they can be made anymore Apprentice IV - Crafted by players, can be bought/sold on the broker Adept I - Drops in Treasure Chests, can be bought/sold on the broker Adept II - Not in game Adept III - Crafted by players using rare components, bought/sold on broker Master I - Drops in Exquisite and Ornate Chests, bought/sold on broker Master II - Every 10 levels, starting at 14, you can pick one of these for free from the skills offered. Look in the Character Development tab of your skills window (L, by default) to see your choices. You don't need to by the previous skills to upgrade (i.e. you don't have to get Apprentice IV to get Adept I). Most people upgrade to at least Apprentice IV or Adept I, and that will serve you perfectly well. Don't worry too much about Adept III/Master I until you get higher.

^^^Great post explaining spell quality progression. One thing I do have a difference of opinion is that it's WELL worth getting Adept3 or Master1 pet spells, especially your tank.Find the rare, buy the rare, find a sage to do the work. Pay for it by harvesting as often as you see nodes up and selling those harvests on the broker.
