How does someone manage to create a character who has the name "Anonymous"? Also, of more interest to me, is how does one create a character that has a name but searching for the name on the character list brings up a complete blank? This is not a plat seller since the character has been in play every day for several weeks.

typing /anon turns you anonymous and takes you off the in-game search lists other than the basic /who

i have all my characters anonymous, as do many others for varying reasons. i just had enough of getting random group invites from people on the opposide side of the world, who hadn't even bothered to send a tell first. Its especially annoying when you're in the middle of a timed crafting writ for example.

I think he's talking about EQ2Players, where some people are listed as Anonymous for some reason.

You can choose not to have your name listed in leaderboards, accomplishments, etc. You would show up as named "Anonymous" in that case. Not sure if you have to pay for a EQ2Players feature to access this page. I went /anon on several of my toons before my free trial expired. I have no interest paying extra money per-month for a database that isn't even updated on a daily basis. Wouldn't pay extra for that information anyhow.

Apparently EQ2 Players was being used to data-mine information on potential targets. You see, even though a character might be set /role or /anon, you could just look up their name on EQ2 Players and know not only their class and level, but everything they were wearing (although nowadays since EQ2 Players doesn't appear to update consistently or often, knowing that to an accurancy of a month or so really isn't much help at all).

For reasons I won't get into, it's a nearly useless solution, but nevertheless, it's there. Causes some interesting problems with roster management that we had to solve in Roster Master.

This may be due to bugs with certain players. I have one guildy that created a character months ago and has already leveled to 80. But even before the anonymous option was put in place, he shows up as anonymous on everything including the guild roster. Also, you cannot search for him via the search function. The only way to reach his profile is the link on the guild roster. However, it is true that the permissions now have an option to remain anonymous on the leaderboards which will also prevent you from seeing their name. I'm not sure if this effects the guild roster (I certainly hope not!) but will try some testing later to find out.
