Clank

Clank

cla-thud

A lone ratonga tripped on the cold stone streets of Freeport, landing quite harshly on the ground. Muttering, he picked himself up and brushed the dirt off of his dark brown fur and glanced about with a single visible eye - the other was covered by an eyepatch. Glancing up to the storming sky, he shuddered and hurried to nowhere in particular, his feet making odd clanking noises as they hit the ground. He turned sharply into an alleyway, his heart racing as he moved faster. A sudden flash of lightning followed by a deafening clap of thunder sent the ratonga flying skittishly onto a drainpipe, where he clung for dear life. A second flash revealed that he was not alone...

"Well, well.. what do we have here? Another sewer rat, hmm?"

Three Tier'Dal thugs stepped out of the shadows and looked calmly up at the shaking ratonga. One of them turned their heads to the first that spoke and said, "Impossible. Look at his bulk. All muscle and no ribs. Perhaps he will be a good thrall? Or food for the wargs..."

"Silence... he may serve well as either of the aforementioned things, but I do not need any more.. and the wargs have a good supply of food. We shall simply rob him and kill him... leave his corpse to rot." The first Tier'Dal chuckled as the ratonga slowly climbed higher up the drainpipe and motioned to the third, silent one. "Bring him down."

The third nodded and pulled out a bow, knocked an arrow, and let it loose, heading straight for the ratonga's head. The target narrowed his gaze slightly and dropped off the drainpipe just before the arrow struck. Cracking his knuckles, the ratonga stepped forward defiantly.

"You're makings a big mistakes, I hope yous realize. Ten seconds, yous will all be deads."

The Tier'Dal looked at one another, and a few moments later, burst out laughing. "Oh, this one has a sense of humor! Come, we shall cut his tongue out first for his foolishness." They approached the ratonga with blades drawn, and the ratonga took one step back, seemingly calculating their every move. Suddenly, the ratonga whirled around wih his fist, striking the gut of a fourth thug who had crept up behind him in an attempt to cut his throat. As the fourth doubled over in pain, the rest rushed forward.

In a flurry of inhuman (or ratongan) speed, agility, and strength, the ratonga slammed his fist into the second's gut, causing him to double over. The ratonga punched the back of the thug;s head as he bent over, then tossing him out of the way to meet the newer threats. The leader thrust his blade forward, only to have it stopped by the ratonga's two paws, each on each side of the flat end of the blade. With a quick, small movement, he snapped the blade in half and lashed out with his foot, breaking the leader's knee backwards. He watched as the Tier'Dal cried out in agonizing pain, then moved his head slightly to the right, avoiding another arrow. He turned around to face the archer, who had taken position atop a small fence. Dodging assault after assault, the ratonga made his way to the fence and leapt up, meeting the archer face to face. In a brief moment, their eyes met - one filled with Hate, and the other filled with an unknown pain...

The archer fell to the ground, his face thoroughly smashed in, bleeding profusely and mixing in with the first drops of rain. The ratonga glanced around, and noting his work was done, skittered off towards the darker corners of the city.

The lone ratonga managed to slip through the vaarious Freeportian gates until he came across a large building in the southern portion. Fiddling in his pockets, he pulled out a key and unlocked the door. He entered the Shadowmaw Restaurant, a somewhat-known place around Freeport, famous for its fine delicacies and excellent service. Picking up a broom he swept around the tables for a bit, then looked at this Wall O'Sharps (tm). Pondering it a bit, he pulled on a cudgel and it turned sideways, revealing a secret passage behind the tapestry to his right. He entered a long and narrow corridor and followed the dark, stone steps down to what appeared to be a workshop of some sort. He reached up underneath his shirt, pulled on something on his right shoulder, then grabbed his fingers and pulled the skin of his arm off, revealing a clockwork arm. He did the same thing for the left portion of his face, as well as his right leg and tail. He sat in hi shop and tinkered around with his mechanical parts to repair any damage caused by the large masses of Qeynosians.

Meanwhile, a very blue Arasi was watching silently from a shadowed corner of the shop. She pondered to herself for a bit, before changing into the form of a great winter wolf, charging at the unsuspecting ratonga. The ratonga blinked for a split second, then turned around and swung a fist, barely missing the beast as it tackled the ratonga to the ground.

"Well Kesk, I see you still haven't done as I told you to do."

Scowling, Kesk shoved the wolf off and glared at her.

"I don't haves the times."

"Find it, or else all of this won't be so secret anymore."

The wolf changed back into the Arasi and sneered at the ratonga.

"I do intend to keep my word, unlike yourself."

"Get outs, Kheri."

The Arasi chuckled a bit and exited through the secret passage, leaving the ratonga mumbling to himself.

The morning sun crept over the horizon, it's light striking the city and illuminating the dew drops, giving an unnatural feel to the setting. Kesk opened the door to his home and peeked out, then locked it and skittered towards another section of Freeport. He didn't get very far until he bumped into... a tree?

The treant grinned happily down at the ratonga, then in one quick motion, scooped the poor creature up and swung him around in a dance. Kesk struggled against the thorny grip fo the treant, then used all of his might and broke free of the dance with the use of centrifugal force. He landed on his bum and glared up at the treant, who was spinning around happily.

"What was that fors?"

The treant paused a moment and slid over to Kesk. Leaning in closely, it whispered slowly, "Kesk needs dancing practice."

Kesk swatted the tree away as it cackled gleefully. He thought for a moment, then jumped up and brought down one fist as hard as he could. He found satisfaction as the treant crashed to the ground with a giant WHUMP, then it started to change shape. It grew wings and turned purple all over. What was worse is that the Fae looked exactly like Kheri, the Arasi from before. Blinking, the female Fae picked herself up and grinned.

"Don't be mean..."

Suddenly roots burst out of the ground and entwined themselves around the ratonga, choking him. The Fae simply stood there grinning, an insane glint in her eye. As soon as it seemed like it was over, the roots retracted back into the ground, leaving the ratonga gasping for breath. The Fae flittered over and patted Kesk on the head, grinning.

"I wouldn't kill friend Kesk!"

She giggled and floated off to a different part of the city. Kesk picked himself up and glared off after her

"For twins yous two are certainlys differents."

"Women," Niko commented absentmindedly as he leaned against the wall watching over the ratonga.

"What's an assassin followsing me for?," Kesk questioned his rodent figures twitching to show his annoyance.

"Oh it's nothing like that," Niko said brushing his hand through the air pushing away the comment like a gnat buzzing around his head. "I've merely been asked to check in on your status."

"So's yous is talking to me?," Kesk questioned the assassin's motives.

"I figured it was best to talk to you rather then try to sneak around and see what it is that doing."

"Yous need not bother," the ratonga let his annoyance slip into his voice.

"Yes well you see that's not going to be good enough. See my contract has certain stipulations tied to it."

Kesk only frowned as much as his rat like features would allow.

"I'll be inside," Niko commented in an overly coy manner as he stepped past Kesk into his home. "I hope that you have some nice brandy. I'm feeling rather thirsty."

Kesk muttered and shook his head.

"I hates Tier'Dals."

Sighing, he closed the door to his restaurant behind him as he entered and found the Tier'Dal sitting at the bar. Muttering and grumbling to himself, he entered the bar and poured the elf a glass of brandy.

"What do yous wants."

"Oh nothing too much," Niko grinned sarcasticly. "Just to remind you that my client's needs should be filled prior to the needs of those faries."

Kesk scowled crossing his arms across his chest.

"You see time is of the essance," Niko grinned haughitly.

"Its is nots that simple," Kesk scowled his iritation growing to the point that daydreams of throttling this annoying Teir'Dal danced through his mind.

"So I will be back in a few days to pick up the item," the assassin stated with his smug grin as he slid off the bar stool. "You know who my employer is and how displeased she'd be if her timeline were to interrupted."

Leaving the glass of brandy untouched on the bar Niko headed out the door to leave the fuming rantonga alone in his restraunt.

Kesk muttered to himself and grabbing the glass of brandy, went downstairs and poured it into a bucket that rank of other alcoholic beverages. Tossing the emptied glass into a large, soapy tub filled with other dishes, he set about scrubbing and cleaning them. He mused to himself about his predicament. Both "employers" were too demanding in their tasks, and he didn't know which one to finish first. He had to find help, and fast.

Finishing his clean-up of the Shadowmaw restaurant, he took a gondola out to the Commonlands to see what foodstuffs he could find, if any at all. The time of year meant that barely anything was growing in this region, and if anything even grew, it wouldn't be as well-grown as other seasons. He sighed as he prodded around a withered berry bush, when a cold hand touched his shoulder.

"Well, if it isn't Kesk..."

Kesk stared upwards into the pink-and-yellow eyes of a giant Iksar male, who, in turn, scowled down at him.

"GAHS! Don't startle mes like thats, Licorice!"

"It's LIKKORAK. Remember it, or you will be my next undead servant..." While saying this, he squeezed the ratonga's shoulder rather hard, casuing a slight squeak of pain.

"Sorrys! What do yous wants with mes?"

"Something tells me you have a bug problem. I can perhaps assist with that."

Kesk frowned.

"Buts I thoughts yous saids Arasi's were useless servants?"

"I did not mean like that... I'll explain it on the way to my tort.. err... home."

The ratonga blinked, but had no choice in the matter as he was half-dragged towards the northern part of Freeport.

Niko frowned at this latest turn of events. He'd hoped for Kesk's sake that he'd have gotten straight to work on his employer's requirements.

Caught off guard by his own thoughts Niko frowned. He didn't care if the little rat man did what he was suppose to do or not. If the rat didn't do the work then he's just slip a knife into the rat's back and be done with the contract. No more of this scampering around the Commonlands following this inventor/chef/monk ugly rat thing.

Slipping a throwing dagger out from under his sleeve he felt sense of thrill getting ready to stick it between two of the rat's vertebra between his shoulders.

Alas Niko's thoughts caught up with him again. He couldn't just arbitrarily slaughter the rat. His employer would not be pleased if Niko over stepped his role for a second time. But at the same time with the Iksar dragging the rat he made such an inviting target.

No, no it was better for him to calm his blood and wait until he was given the termination order. This was so not what he was looking into getting involved with when he had cast off the robes of a wizard and decided to become a shadow of the night for play.

It would be so much better to steal into the home of his employer and gut the swin in his bed. But no, that would not do either. Unfortunately the fat pig knew his identity and it would create issues if it was known in certain circles what he did for fun. It was beneath his stature to sink to the lowliness of assonating persons for coin. He had his own band of assassins to protect and look after him.

That damnable pig knowing his identity had suckered him into the pointless chase of the flea ridden rat. That and earned him his latest tag along.

Shooting a glare at his ‘tag along' Niko slipped the dagger back into its sheath. Better to just follow where this Iksar was taking his mark and see what to do next. There was nothing worth reporting to his employer as of yet.

Insane brown eyes peek out of the shadow as Kesk and Likkorak pass her. A white toothy smile crosses an unseen face as the eyes take in what's following Kesk and that lizard. She blends back into shadows easily. Not hard to do because of her small stature and appearance of a small human child. Chai loved being one of the few Halflings in the City. She loved being able to do pretty much anything she pleased. Though, she owed Kesk. Favor for Favor. That's how it works.'I wonder what he'll give me for information about an assassin following him.' she thinks to herself in perfect Koada'Dal. 'Maybe, this will be THE favor. Though, mayhaps not.' she shakes her head and slips quietly from one shadow to another, enjoying the challenge of remaining hidden in such an open land, alert for any sign of enemy or prey. She briefly becomes visible as she slips between one patch of shadow and another and the clouds part to shine a beam on her, her orange red hair lighting up, her red and green pants and vest glowing dully. She manages to sneak into another bit of shadow quickly. She stops and makes sure she wasn't seen ... she hated being seen unless she wanted to be. And in this case, she didn't want to be seen, or heard.
