Nothing unless you are in a duel

I have experimented with this spell many times myself, trying to find a use for it, and have reached the conclusion that for most mages it has no real function in day-to-day combat situations. The only exception to this is a Necromancer with the Tainted Heals Acheivement end ability that grants their pet a 18% heal each time a Tainted Healing spell is cast, of which Dispel Magic is among.

Dispell magic is totally useless for a wizard, however the wizzy mez can save a group from a bad pull. Your dps means nothing if your group wipes, but if that extra 20 seconds you gave the group to kill one of the mobs from the bad pull. It is used rarely, but it has helped more than a few times in a group and as such is on my hotbars.

Just curious, how do you know?

It seems like a very tough thing to measure.

If you cast Dispel Magic on a named and all of a sudden 4 spells land that would have been resisted if you hadn't cast it how would you know?

It dosent reduce resistability of spells from landing, it removes benficials buffs that the mob may have up just look at the mobs buff bar if you cast and a buff instantly disappears then it worked, if not then it sucks. I personally have never seen it do anythign and I have used it moer than once on different types of mobs watching thier buffs. Not sure if it gives a message in the chat window similiar to when you cure someone, I woudl guess that it would, but I have never seen it.

My point was that buff that was removed, could be improving a creatures resistances.

Also, just because an icon doesn't disappear doesn't mean that nothing happened. If your dispel removes 30 levels of buffs and the creature has a level 35 buff, it should be dropping it down to 5, if I understand the spell correctly. You won't see the icon go away, but it should be less effective.

Again, I don't really know how effective it is, but it does seem difficult to guage.

I dont think thats how it works, and you're talking about debuffs, debuffs will make your spells land more and harder. If Dispel Magic even -is- a debuff, it's a pretty useless one in PvE. Pretty useless altogether

Does it remove damage shields on some raid mobs?

I had completely forgotten about this spell until I read this thread. So naturally I had to dig it out and play with it. I went into duel mode with some guildies to experiment, and also experimented on some mobs. This is what I have found. There are no mobs anywhere, that I can find, that have beneficial magic on them. I suppose we should define beneficial magic. Let's start by saying what it is not. It is not combat abilities like stoneskin or damage shields . It is not buffs granted my armor. It is not buffs granted by natural race or class abilites. DIspell Magic had no apparant effect on any of those. I did however have luck with dispelling magic granted by potions and a few clicky items. I suspect that at one time sony had planned on having some mobs that use potions to buff, and such a spell would be needed against them. Maybe there are even a few of the tougher named out there that still do. However since everyone has passed off this spell as non-functional, we have never tried dispelling them, and have just learned to overcome them with brute force. So, if anyone ever runs into a potion drinking mob let me know so I can dig this otherwise useless spell back out.

This spell has no application beyond pvp or duels. So if your a PvE wizard It never has to go on your hotbar. The spell only dispells player (PC) buffs.

Pre Dof i think it worked on some mobs but ever since update 13 it hasnt.

Mob buffs can be dispelled but not by the is spell. Crusaders and Druid AA can.
