Hello all,

I have been wanting to play a Defiler. They just seem fun and exciting, and thats what this game is all about! Haha, I have a mystic atm, level 23 or so with some melee AA's. I notice I can solo quite effectively and hold my own in PvP quite well. Since I have been thinking about a Defiler over a Mystic, I looked up on the boards the last few days, and also asked about it in game to some people. So far, I have the consensus (sp?) of the following regarding usefulness and 'ability':

Solo, Mystics are more effective and much faster due to burst DPS by taking the melee line in EoF and agi line is KoS AA tree's. I personally know this as My Mystic is currently melee spec'd and its great. Defilers dont have the EoF melee line, and their DPS is slower. My question is, how much slower?

Group, Mystics and Defilers are both quite effective and pretty much on par with each other. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, with small groups favoring Mystics due to +DPS and large groups favoring Defilers due to better heals, debuffs, ect, as DPS is not much of a problem since other classes can take care of it.

Raid, with RoK, mystics are no longer needed in raiding, as other classes can replace them, while Defilers still hold a few cards up their sleeves and have a spot in MT group still, especially with their upgraded wards, bigger heals, and great debuffs. I probably wont be doing much of this, I have done a few raids since I started playing Eq2, which was about 3 months before Nagafen server started, and I probably wont do alot more, as I just dont have personal time to sacrifice.

So, my question is thus to the community: Should I make a Mystic, exile him (which I will do at level 10), and play with him until around 45, then betray to Defiler, and then exile back? I want to be an exile at level 10, and stay there. Also, i'm on a PvP server. As a low level exile, I will probably not have much grouping, if any. So, the ability to solo "effectively" is important, and the ability to defend myself in PvP is also important. Im going to be either a Mystic or a Defiler, and I also have plans on making a Dirge and exiling with my Defiler 10. Other classes, including a plate tank (paladin or another berserker) and a mage (illusionist or warlock) will also be future projects to exile and level at 10.

My reason for doing this is I solo or small group now, since I dont have the time for anything grand in the game with the way my schedules are in real life. I also have been playing for awhile, and I want something new, challenging, and exciting. I dont want to be gimped, or frustrated from ineffectiveness. (Do not get my frustration confused with deaths. I know deaths happen, and will happen alot as an exile, and I am prepared for that. I have never had a problem with dieing, but I have had a problem with choosing classes that cannot defend themselves solo)

I know this is a group based game, and I would love to do that. Thats how I leveled up my current berserker, and what i use him for. But, right now in my life, I dont have the time for that, and I want to be an exile starting from the low levels and leveling up. That is why I need to be able to handle myself, by myself.

Thanks in advance for any input, flames, comments, or advice.

RottkNagafen

All the effort put into betraying twice will come nowhere close to the soloing advantage you get from a mystic to a defiler.Yes mystics can solo much better than defilers, but until both classes get around 70-80 AA you're not going to notice the difference. 80-140 AA and you will.Honestly for raids, it depends on your server's demographics. Buy the eq2players info for just one month so you can compare how many active defilers and mystics there are your server. Yeah defilers might be a little bit better for the MT group, but all raids want to have both a defiler *and* a mystic. And having 2 defilers in a raid is almost as stupid as 2 guardians. So it might be to your advantage to roll and stick with a mystic.Another thing you mentioned is you're doing a pvp server. Go with the mystic, the sow enhancement alone blows anything a defiler has pvp wise.

I played a friend's mystic for a while and didn't care for it too much compared to my defiler (currently level 73), but that of course is just personal taste. I'm not interested in doing melee as a healer If dps is a concern, don't forget you can add AA points to all the dot/debuffs a defiler has to increase the damage output. Granted, that's probably not what you'll want to put AA points into at first, but eventually it becomes practical to do so.

For solo PvP, mystics are awsome. But for sheer fun and havoc causing, nothing beats fearing half an x2 raid off an Island in KoS.
