I thought about putting this in the the other defiler pvp thread but my question is quite a bit different and I did not want to hijack the other thread.

I have a lvl 22 fury, full mastercrafted - adept 3s. Two or three adornments, no masters that I can remember, 29 AA. No special totems or potions. Just point and click.

Until today he had never been killed one-on-one by somebody the same level or lower. That sounds impressive, but keep in mind on a pvp server there are few people who will attack somebody one-on-one the same level or higher than themselves.

Today I was attacked after playing far too long. Somebody in my guild was writing me a question just as I was attacked. I wasn't really interested in the fight, and after a few moments realized that neither the attacker nor I was making any headway.

So in the middle of the fight I decided to write back to my fellow guild member and answer their question.

A moment or two later I checked back on how I was doing and saw my health was down to about 20-25%!

I'm shocked and start spamming heal spells, but it is too late and I'm killed.

So afterwards I look over the combat log and see that the guy was a defiler. I've never played a defiler and know nothing about them.

Looking over the log in detail I see that he had some kind of ward that prevented me from doing any damage at all with most of my attacks. Isn't that kind of like manashield with mages? That must be nice to be able to block completely enormous amounts of damage. "Ghostly Ward" it was called. But I'm not upset about that. Afterall he wasn't able to do much damage to me either for a while. That is why I took my mind off the fight to write to my fellow guildie.

Looking at the log some more I discovered he had hit me with a spell called "Scourge" that had, in one strike, taken away half of my health points. That is how he had been able to instantly drop my health down so fast while my mind was elsewhere.

According to the log his "Scourge" spell had done about 250 points of damage three times in a row with, seemingly, one strike. I think there was a message about a critical hit, but I don't really remember.

I'm a little surprised that a defiler, which I just learned today is a druid, would have a spell that can instantly drop me to half-health. Isn't that rather similar to "Harm Touch" that Shadowknights have?

Since defilers are druids, I assume they can heal, kind of like a fury or warden.

So defilers have a spell that more-or-less is similar to manashield, blocking huge amounts of damage?

They have a spell similar to "Harm Touch" capable of inflicting huge amounts of damage?

And, on top of all that, they can heal too?

Is that true?

If not, how do we explain what he did?

The huge amounts of damage he inflicted all at once.... was it "luck". A "critical hit" that doesn't happen very often?

I realize that quite a few toons on a pvp server are decked out in fabled gear and "all" masters. Maybe that explains it?

I'm just trying to think how on earth could a toon that can routinely do all of the above ever lose a one-on-one fight.

I'm not upset, and don't want to seem like I'm whining that I lost a fight. I lose plenty and don't have a title. The other guy was a slayer.

I'm just overwhelmed that he was able to instantly drop me to half-health, while completely blocking most of my attacks, and presumably would have been able to heal himself if he wanted if I'd ever managed to inflict damage.

Maybe I should roll me one of those defilers!
