View Full Version : Is Battle Cleric a good replacement for a pally that wants a bit more DPS?

Hello all! I know I am not the first to ask this, but I have been away for awhile and did not find a good recent fit for this question on the forums. I have played a paladin before and they are an interesting class. I like the armor and the fact that they use shield, sword/hammer, and spells to do their work. They seem more active than some toons that are just pure button mashing of same 2 or 3 skills each go. With that said, I have always found the Pally's DPS a bit lacking compared to say a SK or zerk and I unfortunately like to kill things at a decent rate (part of the fun for me). I guess I am looking for a bit of both worlds...the utility (or some of it) of the pally with a bit better DPS. Do battle clerics generally out DPS pallys (assume non-top of the line gear/not al masters and predominately solo play)? For the battle cleric I am looking primarily at the mystic and inquistor since they are more melee oriented battle clerics (from what I have heard) than the warden.

Thanks!

First a few things.

Clerics are either Templar or Inquisitor

Shaman are either Mystic or Defiler

Druids are either Warden or Fury.

Although this is certainly best asked on the cleric forums, I belive Battle cleric is either Templar or Inquisitor who have picked a specific AA setup (from cleric tree). So there are no battle cleric Mystics, so to speak.

Half of the healers (Mystic, Inquisitor and Warden) can chose (from eof tree) to turn their combat spells in to combat arts. That makes them fast casting and, with right equipment and AA, slightly higher dps.

My Mystic can do in the order of 500-800 dps solo, depending on level of mob, heroic or solo, how good my stuff procs and so on. When my Mystic and Warden was equally equiped my Mystic out dps'ed my Warden with about 10%. My Mystic is better equped then my Warden now, but not raid specced. I expect an Inquisitor to be atleast as good as this, although that is just guessing. Templars can do good melee dps also when speccing for it, but read the Templar forums for that. There are a ton of post there on the subject.

This is purely dps, and since you also mentioned utility I would suggest you mention what other things that are important to you.

I find Paladin and Mystic to be very similar classes. I played a Paladin first and spent a lot of time providing healing in groups, often in addition to and often instead of being the group tank. This was primarily because my groups often had multiple fighters and no healers. Paladins are a good group healer for small (2-4) groups and can support a tank. As a tank, they work quite well.Mystics don't make such good tanks, primarily due to aggro control issues (no taunts). They of course make good healers. They are very similar to Paladins, though, because they protect themselves (and the group) with wards, excel in melee combat and have good mitigation and health. On a solo basis, I think my Mystic is quite a bit better fighter than my Paladin due to the fact that I can self-buff my stats to a much higher level (mystics buff for STR/STA/AGI). With 100% melee crits, I crit every time on both auto attacks and on combat arts (mystics have an AA line that converts their spells to CAs -- since they buff STR, their combat arts hit for a lot).
