View Full Version : More advice for newbies: kill'em all!

I started as a 100% newbie to online games in May. Below is a rough summary of my evolution on a pvp'er up to and including my current state:

1. Complete newbie wandering around in the gear I was born with, naive, exploring, impressed by the quaint environment.

2. Realizing that I needed to upgrade my gear to help me stay alive against monsters. There was no hope of beating the gankers, so just ignore them.

3. Discovering that crafters gouge new players on the broker. The only way to get nice gear is to become a crafter and make my own.

4. Actually I need to make several crafters.

5. With master-crafted gear I can defeat a lot of monsters, but the gankers still kill me at will.

6. With lots of master-crafted gear and adept 3 spells I can beat some of the pvp'ers

7. Located this forum while looking for hints and tips.

8. Transmuting helps make gear better.

9. Achievement experience gives you better abilities, so start paying more attention to quests

10. Regardless of whether I do quests I gain levels so fast that I out-grow my gear too soon.... basically doing nothing but harvesting for my current tier.... don't have time for quests because I have to harvest so much.... if I do quests I only fall farther behind from leveling too much.... dull, boring, broke, and frustrating... still getting ganked all the time

11. Level-locked to prevent myself from leveling so fast that my gear continually falls farther and farther behind my current level.

12. Read on the forum that I should do every quest I can.

13. Level lock at level 1.

14. Wait! Don't do every quest you can. Don't bother with quests below level 10. Do as many level 10-12 quests as possible before you hit adventure level 10, and don't turn in those quests until you reach level 10. Don't turn in collections. They give too much adventure experience and you level too fast.

15. Well, that helped. With full master-crafted and adept 3's, and being level-locked early and not turning in quests until I hit level 10 I earned my first pvp title.

16. I still only manage about 2-3 achievement points per level. How on earth do I gets more than that? Killing named non-player characters will give achievement experience without a lot of adventure expereince, but groups for that are hard to come by. Even joined a guild, but guild members generally don't coordinate on quests or even for pvp. May not get legendary or fabled gear solo, gear which comes from killing named non-player characters. So how do I get more achievement experience per level? Question asked repeatedly but not answered on forum.

17. Use the shout feature: /sh to ask if anybody wants to help with a quest or a named character. Half the time somebody will help. Often newbies will show up because they are in the same boat, but even grouping with newbies gives positive results. A group of newbies can be rather powerful. Some guild member laugh when somebody shouts like that, but if they'd offer a weekly group, guild members would not have to shout like that.

Some people say use the "invite" button. But how do you feel when somebody you don't know sends you a cold invite? You know nothing about what they are doing or what level they are, let alone whether you can depend on them. Its seems far more realistic to tell a person first what you are up to and maybe what class and level you are and how many are in your group before inviting them to join.

18. Do not do every level 10 or higher quest you can! Or at least don't turn them in. Cut back on the number of quests that you do and focus on killing named non-player characters (named toons). You quest book will fill up quickly if you explore much. So start to be picky about which quests you do. Make use of Google or another internet search engine to find out information about quests in advance. Be sure to do city task quests! They give achievement experience the first time you do them without giving any adventure experience.

19. In master-crafted gear, adept 3 spells, level-locked, solo or group, you can kill named non-player characters. Here is where the "kill'em all" comment comes in. Quite a few named toons are not out to kill you! They will just wander around and mind their own business. You might even think they are on your side. Maybe they are. But kill them anyway. If you attack and the screen says "not an enemy" then fine. Leave them alone. Otherwise kill them. You will get achievement experience. It might hurt your faction standing a little with some factions, so maybe don't kill the same one over and over and over and over. However, do kill the same one over and over and over and over if it does not hurt your faction. You only get achievement experience the first time you kill them, but at least you will get loot each time you kill them. A number of them are not even herioc.

20. By killing every named toon you find, neutral or otherwise, doing city task, and managing other quests, I've been able to increase the number of achievement points by about 0.5 per level. I now have a level 13 wizzard with 13 achievement points, and:

.....A. he did not lock until level 6 or 7 (a no-no)

.....B. he did turn in a large number of level 1-6 quests (a no-no)

.....C. he did not know to do the "History of the...." books until after he hit level 10 (not sure how important that oversight was)

.....D. and at one point by accident he was unlocked for a while during level 12 (a big no-no).

Even still, at this rate, he might be able to pop manashield by level 17 or 18. He does not have a title yet, but yesterday he did kill a level 11 twink warden one-on-one. So I think I'm on the right track.

I hope this helps some newbies advance up the learning curve faster than I was able to do. I myself remain open to advice from others, and if something I wrote here was wrong feel free to point it out.

The game is challenging to earn it yourself and if you buy plat, people will know that you did and you will look like a total loser. DONT BUY PLAT, earn it and those twinks riding on nightmare horses with fabled gear are people with no life (ok that may of been harsh.. and some twinks may of actually earned it but still)

I have been playing this game a year and have sold more than 800 plat. How?

1. I have 7 crafters and I'm a fierce undercutter. My tailor (lvl 50) sells the most stuff, but adorments from every crafter also sell well.

2. Farming masters and selling them on the broker

3. Buying fabled gear well below the market price and selling it for more.

I got the status for my horses by buying status items. I would wait until the price dropped and then buy them all up.

I would hazard a guess that the majority of low level players (especially those on nighmare horses etc) are "fed" by higher level characters, and so they should be.It certainly isn't sad if you see a low level on a horse. This is pvp after all. Krokus, you should be banned. Been owned much?

Oh, I forgot to mention.... to the OPNice post, that should help new players know what kind of thing to expect.Good work
Alternatively play a class that's better at soloing and just level up normally, with no grinding just quests. You'll hit 100 achievement by 70 and everything will be right with the world. Instead of making another person who never ever levels above 20.

I might try that with one of my toons now that I know the game far, far better than I did 6 months ago.

Regardless, I wanted to try my hand at a Wizard. From what I've been reading, they are not too bad at soloing now. Indeed there is a thread here on page one complaining about wizards and asking that manashield be taken out of pvp because it is supposedly so overpowered.

I personally have every intention of playing my wizard far beyond level 20.

The post above describes my evolution as a pvper to date. Future changes or advancements to my playing style will probably be described in a future post.

P.S.

Rethaneu, I would sincerely enjoy reading a newbie-oriented detailed advice post from someone like yourself describing the approach you suggest.

I'd say farm names if you want cash, m1 will still sell to new twinks.

So, it's better to discover all those spots in lvl1-9, get experience to level & forget about the AA. Wait with reading every 3rd story of the books untill you are lvl10. Then you get the most AA/least XP with examining the book.

Good thread m8. Lots has been experienced by us too. Only joining a guild brought me more fun it seems.

Killemall you say? Or did you, and thats why your getting so worked up over it because someone called your bluff and now you get defensive about it? The fact of the matter remains, that whether or not YOU bought plat, there are those out there that DO. It is out there and is utilized. So really, wipe the tears from your feel bads and realize that a generalized statement that is TRUE wasn't directed at you personally, or maybe it was and thats why its such a sore spot. Conscience eating away at you? You feel dirty? Take a shower, might help.

dude, please wipe my tears...the statement is plainly false and I'm fed up with ppl. gettin' their behinds handing to them by others who invested more cash then they did coming here and crying about plat buyers(because really I don't think it's any other parameter but cash investement and obviously class in the success of a t2 toon)I'm quite sure there are enough who buy plat, however, 90% of the ppl. from whom I was crafting in vast quantities(like - he spent couple of plats to craft that guy a3s for another 10 lvls) simply when they were logging some other toon to give me the rares or something, their other toon was 70... I never bought anything over 3p(mount excluded) however, right now, looking at plat of plat pilling there and having nothing to do with them(because if you start buying good fabled you won't have enough cash even if a mountain of it was right near you), I"m considering buying a nightmare to a lvl 8 inqui I might play someday just because; even if he's atm nicely sitting in a tradeskill instance...fact is that, from what I saw so far in prices of those really good items, you can either spend on everything you want and prolly run broke in one week even if all farmers on the server would work for you, or you settle with buyin' a nightmare and some decent gear for a new twink from time to time while keepin' your main dood in check.
