There are quite some difference between necro's in EQ1 and WoW.

The biggest is the lack of fear. We do get a fear spell but it gets resisted ALOT and has a super short duration at best. Basically what I am saying there is no fear kiting like in EQ and now crowd control with fear like in WoW.

That being said, necro's rock. Great solo'r and top tier DPS for raids. The AA spec you choose makes a difference on your soloability and your raid dps so alot of folks have one aa spec while leveling then respec for raiding (I did anyway).

In eq2 spells are a little different in that there are different versions of each spell..or more specifically, there are more and less potent version of spells:

apprentice 1,2,3,4, Adept 1 and 3, and Master I and II

when you level (through level 50 any way) you get the apprentice 1 of each spell automatically when you level. Spellcrafters (sages) can make appren 1-4 and adept 3 (with rare mats for adept 3). Adpet 1 and Master I are drops from mobs with the masters being more rare and from named mobs. You can find adepts on the broker quite often and usualy quite cheap.

Master II spells are free choices every 12 levels or so.

Necro's get 3 types of pets, tank, mage and scout and your spell quality for each will affect your ability to level drastically.

With an adept 3 or master pet you can solo normal mobs 3-5+ levels all the way to 70 (now 80 I guess).

Pet also get "stance" or offensive and defensive buffs that make the more..well..offensive or defensive and the quality of these will also affect your ability to level.

Get a good tank pet and a good def stance and you can burn through mobs and quests well over your level.

Any specific questions you want answered?

peace,

Deathlily, 71 necro of Mistmoore.

Ps: never PvP'd so no advice here..sorry

Well, personally I'm a brand new necro myself I literally just started yesterday. I'm playing a sarnak, which I have to say has a pretty nice story line and I'm really enjoying the necro role so far. I guess some of my questions are as follows:#1 What pet is my tank pet? Right now I have the bat and the spider, I'm only level 13 atm.#2 What AA's should I get first the KoS STA line or the EoF line?#3 I play with a warden, inquisitor and a shadow knight. Do I need to follow the soloist AA points or should I spec my necro differently?

Dont take my word on it since I havent played for 3 weeks, and well, we had an exp pack release and stuff liek that tends to put things on its head. But in pvp, necros are good from mid 20ies to low 50ies. After that, its a pve toon. Sadly, because I loved my necro to death. (Others death that is) and now its my farm toon.

great posts here. thank you so much.

i guess i am afraid about doing something to my character that cannot be undone. when do we start getting aa points? 10? and why do so many people say you have to turn off combat exp so you can get more aa points for your level?

In EQ2, pretty much everything can be undone, it is part of the dumbing down of the game SOE has gotten into...

You start getting AA points at 10. Or so you should. I rolled a gnome coercer and I am not getting AAs and still trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with it. SOE CS hasn't gotten back to me yet (I am sure they have an extra load of work with the new expansion....).

On pvp servers, you fight people within a certain level range. Having more AAs than someone else of similar level (in your level range) will give you an advantage. So people will lock exp and just try to max out on AAs, so to be competitive. Keep in mind that it makes progression VERY slow and, well, it still won't make you competitive, unless you spend A LOT of time farming/harvesting/tradeskilling. Personally, I like seeing new content, so I would never lock my exp bar. But the choice is up to you and, yes, it does make a difference in pvp.

Now, necros and pvp... It hurts just to type about it. And I should say - I played a necro on SZ since the day it was released and a Warlock in WoW. In EQ2, we are gimped and this is not the usual tirade from a leet kid who needs to have the most uber class/race/tradeskill/equip combo to enjoy the game. I am fine with a challenge, I am fine with it being hard, but this is beyond ridiculous. If you are solo, you will get stun locked by some scout sneaking on you and die prior to casting one single spell. Over and over. Scout's track will ensure that they always get the jump on you. Sometimes you will cast a spell and it won't make a difference. Fear is short and broken by dmg. Root is broken by dmg. There is no shadowstep. The best lifetaps we get will barely heal you for 10-15%. Pet are ok, but people just ignore them, and pet taunt will only work on noobs that do not know how to retarget.

In groups, pvp is fun. So, if you don't plan on soloing, a necro is a viable choice. But solo pvp on a necro is an exercise in frustration.

personally I don't like the "turn off combat exp" advice. All of my tunes, including my two 72's approached 80-90 aa's around 70. I quested with both of them and did instance. That left about 10-20 aa's to get at 70. That was fine with me.

I think the main reason folks want all the aa's at low levels is it makes it easer to level afterward. I would be interested in seeing some data on who would get to 70 faster, the straight shot to 70 or the character that stopped at 20 to get 20 aa's.

What others have said is true. Pretty hard to screw up your character. You can reset your aa's so don't sweat it.

peace,

Deathlily, 72 necro of Mistmoore
