Which race should I consider for a guardian on a PVE server?

Thanks for your time.

Ogre.

Folks will tell your race doesn't matter in the big scheme of things, and I'll let you decide whether or not you agree with them, but it's Ogre for sure.

I have to agree. If you were to insist on choosing a good or neutral race then I would suggest dwarf or barbarian, but ogre is the race of choice for tanks.

I believe that RoK is adding some new racials and most of them give races abilities that go along with the traditional role of a race. That futher confirms the idea that you want to make an ogre or other race typically associated with tanking.

Gonna have to go with Dwarf because Ogres are big and ugly

Now that the racials are being revamped there are some things to consider about choosing your race.

Ogre is a solid choice with the stun immunity buff and mitigation buff,

dwarfs are also solid as they are the other race that got + aggresion skill.

Iksar has more passive defense type buffs because they got +parry instead of +aggresion, plus a mitigation buff.

Human got + to all weapon skills and all defense skills but didn't get +crit.

Troll is the only race other than human to get +slashing, and fear immunity has to count for something

What are some of the attack abilities other races have been getting? One of my new ones(Dwarf) is an AOE attack that deals not too much damage(maybe half of besiege) that I get every 2 mins. Nice for Rescuing on groups of mobs. With the AGI line I would now have 3 AOE attacks and the group AOE Taunt...not bad.

Is cornering used in EQ2? And if it is, does being smaller help? I know these were both true in Eq1, but with the improved graphics engine and most likely different raid mechanics this may not apply...

Explanation (which will be old hat for old EQ1 tanks): In the original game, you could lock a mob that aoe'd into a corner of a room and usually this would protect the rest of your raid force from the worst of the AOEs (assuming they were directional, as many were). A side-benefit was that when/if the mob enraged, cornering tended to force those sorts who habitually ate enrage (dying as a result) to attack from behind.

I'm pretty sure the enrage @ 10% thing doesn't happen in EQ2... never seen it if it does. And the fact is that alot of weird stuff happened in EQ1 due to strangeness with their collision detection (i.e. the stuff that tells you "Here's a wall... you must stop"<img src="/eq2/images/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img src=" width="15" height="15" />" width="15" height="15"> that doesn't happen in EQ2. Plus... does directional AOE even exist in EQ2? Yeah, I'm living in the past and not yet full integrated into the new <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img src=" width="15" height="15" />" width="15" height="15">

These are a bunch of "ifs", but I mention it because there at least USED to be a compelling reason to choose a small race. I was an Ogre Warrior and treasured my shrinky bracer (from VT).

Besides... Ratongae rock!

Edit: I posted this and remembered a fight I saw a couple of weeks ago in the Commonlands (almost typed East Commonland... I see a theme here). A guild was trying to down the Avatar of Marr, and since it was in a very public place (near the Freeport Docks Griffin tower) I got to watch. It looked NOTHING like what I am used to in EQ1... first its weird to see such a small raidforce. But they DID back him up against the tower (away from the balance of the Raid) so I'm thinking there may be some similarities.

Tonga Pride! Tonga are not a bad race for guardians. With the higher end fluff spell you can choose to be either normal tonga height or larger depending on the situation. Tonga get some decent benefits. Defense, Agility, Crit chance with Pierce (yeah, I know. Not the best but better than a kick in the tail). Not as good as an Ogre's, but then we are MUCH cooler. They have to compensate for our Tonga Super-Cool Factor somehow. Majo, 70 Guardian of Shadow Guard, Venekor

If having 3% lower HP than Ogre/Halfling/Dwarf won't bother you Dark Elf is the superior choice right now if starting a new character.

I have an Ogre Berserker that's a blast to play, but on the Guardian side of things, honestly I haven't missed the racial boosts ogres have over Teir'Dal. I have a Teir'Dal Guardian that I've had a blast playing, and generally have little trouble with in PvE.

Human is a solid option as well.

+7 pierce/slash/crush/ranged/defense3% Health5 STA+200 heat/coldsingle target attack for 4-500+56 STR buff 3 min duration/10min recast

(Diplomacy is nice for splitting pulls outside of raids)

Not all of the barbarian traditions are solely raid based, but we get a few.+3% Max Health1% Doubleattack1% Melee crit chance+5 ParryBarbaric Rage (Increases your defensive skills when your health is below 30% (though hopefully you wont get that low too much). And if your fighting non-epics (like for unrest), the extra 2.5 second stun Tundra Slam is pretty decent.

I'm pretty happy with how the Kerra traits turned out for my guard, so I'd say Kerra are a good option as well with the following traits available:Choices: Ancestral protection - divine resist (P) Fleetness of Foot - 5 agi (P) Murrar Shar's guidance - Melee: 2 melee crit + 5 parry (P) Claw - slashing attack + physical mitigation debuff, 30 sec recast (A) Tribal Knowledge - 3% power (P)
