I tried using the "/pet ranged", while soloing some green mobs I needed for a quest, using my grim spellbinder. I'd just kinda root them over and over and let the pet cast at will. Only thing is... although it would initially stay put and cast spells from a distance, before long, it would rush in to stand toe to toe with the mob! I thought "/pet ranged" was supposed to prevent that. If not, what's it for? Am I doing something wrong? I'd like to know before I embarrass myself in a group by tripping over my feet. First pet class I've played, so I'm a bit clueless.

This normally only happens when the pet has line of sight issues (ie if the mob is standing on a very small stone then the pet will not see it). you can try using the anchor command to help keep the pet where it is.

There wasn't anything there to get in the way. And the warlock pet cast several times with no problem. And then, even when told to stay put via the anchor command (I thought of this already), it would rush in and stand toe to toe with the mob! This is without the mob having moved at all, so it's not line of sight.

After the mob was dead, however, it would rush back to where it was supposed to stay, as if perhaps I wouldn't notice it's rebelious behavior if it pretended nothing had happened. : )

I'm worried about it because I don't want to be in a group, have my caster pet rush in all of the sudden, and then get wiped out by a frontal arc attack from a mob before I realize what's going on. Why put in /pet ranged if it only works some of the time? Bah.

Anyone else noticing their caster pet rushing in regardless?

The only time my warlock pet has gone in to fight is when he is out of power...other than that.....he keeps his distance....never ever had a problem with it.

Nope no problem with my mage rushing in to melee when on /pet ranged. That doesnt mean he wont move to get line of sight and occasionally get near the mob when moving. Cast pet, press macro for /pet ranged, and pretty much forget about him. One thing you might try is when the pet is rushing in use your summon pet spell and see if he starts rushing in again.

Have fun, yes I loved the days of pulling pet back all the time to avoid AoEs........Not!
