View Full Version : Stuck at "Waiting for Entities"

I have been on a long hiatus, but decided it was time to get active again.

However, I have great difficulty getting into the game, and cannot seem to remain connected.

I can login, and get patched OK, but when I attempt to load my character, it sticks at the "Waiting for Entities" stage.

Sometimes, if I wait, some sort of timeout occurs, and I drop back to the character screen. If I immediately "Play" my character after that he gets on, but it seems as soon as I zone I am back to "Waiting for Entities"

Now I have 2 different PCs that have EQ2 loaded, my older one, and the newer one I shifted too about a year ago. Both used to be able to play with no problems. Both now show the same "Waiting for entities" issue, which tends to lead me to suspect the problem is outside my PC.

Both go through my Linksys Router and into my cable modem. I have not changed router settings in several years, but I went into my router config and checked I am doing no filtering or port forwarding.

THe only thing I have not done yet is actually take the router out of the loop, mainly because I have a hard time beliveing its the problem (given the lack of change in it over that time).

Does anyone have a clue at what I might need to look at to figure out what is going on ?

Thanks

Balagor

I'll repost a few questions I posted in another thread.Does this happen with every character?Does this happen for every zone?Does this happen when creating a new character?Have you tried the trace route tests in this post?http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=353617What is your modem and firmware version? Is this the current version? What is your router and firmware version? Is this the current version? The techs here can't really troubleshoot or help much with connection problems since there are so many different types of connections and DSL, cable modems, and routers.Othesus - Dirge - Lucan DLereVaspar - Fury - Lucan DLere

IN response to your questions :

1) I have tried 3 of my characters, all 3 show the same behavior (all on Oasis). In each case, the first login I did with them seemed to log in fine. After that I had problems. I will try to other 4 to see if they misbehave too

2) I have been in a limited set of zone. Initially with my main it was in Feerot. All other cases have been in Qeynos city and suburb zones. I have not notices one that worked correctly consistently.

3) I have not tried creating a new character

4) Tracert results ( I added Oasis to the list, as I use the Oasis server for my But to get my provider (which is Knology) to fix something, we would have to ID what needs to be fixed.

This afternoon I may try my other 4 chars and making a dummy on Oasis, and maybe one other server, and see what I see

Thanks

Balagor

Are you running any kind of software firewall? What kind of cable modem do you have?

Balagor

1) No Software Firewall, I double checked to make sure.

2) Cable Modem is a 3Com OfficeConnect Cable Modem, model number CM29220 according to the case.

Additional test. I created a new character on Oasis, it showed connection issues (max I have ever gotten on Oasis is about 20 minutes before some form of connection [Removed for Content] occurs). Created an identical character on Befallen, ran for 1 hour with no problems. I will probably try to accumulate more time on the Befallen character later for extra data, but it looks like my issue might be server specific.

Thanks for the help so far.

Balagor

Hmm, it's always at "Waiting for Entities"?After looking at this post from TSR-JasonC I should ask, are you running any antivirus software?http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...?topic_id=40321Also, try deleting your cache and logincache-us folders. It's still possible that it's a modem/router/internet problem. Do you see anything strange happen with the lights on the cable modem when this happens? Can your other computer browse web sites when this happens? Is this your cable modem here?http://www.neotechcc.org/modemscd/sharkfin.htmHave you looked at the web configuration pages? If you have the newer firmware there's a diagnostic page that may give some clues to any modem problems. If it seems like the modem is the problem it would be worth trying to swap it out with a different one.Othesus - Dirge - Lucan DLereVaspar - Fury - Lucan DLere

1) When my main character hangs at login it always apears to be that. I have also seen a zone just stop responding (often during a fight). And I have seen cases where I zone in, but the zone never populates.

2) I am running Anti-virus software on both PCs but from different vendors (and they were running back in Jan when I did not problems too). On the flip side, the problem does seem worse for my high level characters

3) I will try the cache delete when I get home this evening.

4) When I was doing my initial error reporting, I had EQ2 hung on one computer while I was on this forum with the other

5) THe bottom picture (the boxlike one), looks like my modem. From what I can see of documentation, there is no HTML interface.

Well, I turned off the AV Scanner, and killed to 2 cache directories, and no change in behavior.

Since it seems to be Oasis specific, I am kinda hopeing when tech support gets to me they will provide me with something that can be passed to my ISP's tech support to test server communication better.

Thanks,

Balagor

You may need to reconfigure your router to allow our servers to connect to your system properly. Also, if your router supports SPI firewall, you may need to disable it. Most MMO games don't work well with it on.Here's a link to all the information you need to enter into your routers configuration page:http://help.station.sony.com/cgi-bi...p?p_faqid=12293I hope this helps you.
Quick recap of what I have observed :

1) Problem occurs with or without router in place

2) Problem occurs on 2 seperate computers

3) Problem appears to occur on Oasis server, but not Befallen server (as tested with 2 new characters, one on each server).

My suspect is upstream of me, but I need a testable entity to show ISP tech before I get them in the loop (i.e. I cannot get to a server reliablely is not going to be enough data for them to act on I suspect).

Thanks,

Balagor

If your modem has a built-in router, you may have to do the same thing with it. The way you can check is to do an IPCONFIG at a DOS prompt. If the number starts with 192.168, then you've got a built-in router.Click on Start, then click Run (click on search if you have Vista).Type CMD and press enter. When the DOS box comes up, type IPCONFIG and press enter. It should show you the IP address.Best regards,Richard

That's the only other clue that seems worth chasing down. You may not be seeing the problem there because it's a lower level character. Befallen and Oasis appear to be both at the Washington DC server farm.At this point you may want to contact your ISP tech support or try posting in the dslreports.com forums. If you want to try digging deeper yourself you can try an ethernet packet inspector like Wireshark but I'm not sure if you'll be able to decipher anything from it.

Check your background apps for anything that might be slowing you down, such as BitTorrent, Limewire, etc. Also, check your network conections and make sure you don't have anything checked off in the proxy section.Let me know how it works out for you.Best regards,Richard

A few notes :

MS Info takes with several Internet Explorer Windows open.

The Big Fix application came with the system, and it is supposed to check a central site for system updates. At this point I always shut it down on startup after checking to see if it got any alerts, because it tend to hang and use up all of one of my processors.

All my other systems are shutdown, so the only things in the current chain are my main PC, my router, and my cable modem.

As previously stated, last weekend I created 2 new characters, one on Oasis (my main server), one on Befallen. Both characters were Iksar Shadowknights, starting in Neriak. The Oasis character showed the same problems as my other characters, the best time I had without losing connection was 20 minutes, most of the time shorter. The Befallen character has been played for 3 sessions, each over an hour, and has showed no connection problems.

My local network connection is set for :

Client for Microsoft Networks

File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks

QoS Packet Scheduler

Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I have no idea what the QoS Scheduler is for, I just turned it off, as it is not configurable. The Windows Firewall is definitely off, and no Proxies that I can detect. If there is a specific place to check for proxies that I need to doublecheck, let me know.

Hope this leads us somewhere

Balagor

I am also having the same problem. So are some others inmy guild and friends from other guilds. Sometimes it will load past entities and I will get ingame. However, atfer playign for a few minutes, the entities will disappear. Mobs, npc's, ground spanws will all disappear. I have to camp tocharacter select and try to load the zone again. Somestimes it will load and be fine other times it will get stuck again.

12 hours agao I didnt have any problems, now I do. Nothing has changed on my end. My comp is still the same, my connection is still the same,; none of my settings have changed. I suspect this is a severside probelm, not a clientside.

I am having the same issues as well. On Two separate computers. I wonder if it is an ISP problem? I use yahoo dsl. Or regional issue? I uninstalled the game and cleared out every folder and reference to EQ on my system and did a fresh install. I will let you know how it goes.

After the fresh install I still had the same issues after 20 minutes or so. I usually play on AB server and made a character on Everfrost and had ZERO problems. In fact, the game loaded and plays faster than on AB server. Too bad all my characters are on AB.

Definately server side.

For the other players, your problem may or may not be the same as Balagor's, but please start a new thread with specific information for your problem. The Oasis and Befallen difference is still the only real clue but it could point to several things.Just as a test have you tried a clean boot? You have a lot of McAfee and AOL things running. Follow the directions in this post:http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...10Othesus - Dirge - Lucan DLereVaspar - Fury - Lucan DLere

Ran MSConfig, killed all startup programs (except it would not let me kill some Nvidia service, claimed an access violation), still had connection issues.
