I've been playing Eq2 for a few hours now and am experiencing what i would call graphic lag when loading new characters and zones in general. Its not too noticable in the smaller zones (its still there though) but when theres a lot of pc's around it hiccups through the frames. Oh, almost forgot, this is what i have tried: Turning off DEP, complex shaders to -1, turned down settings in game (am now running with balanced, although a few things turned down from there), disabled all firewall and anti-virus programs, turned off all running process except windows required and eq2, nothing really seems to help, maybe a hardware issue?

Hold on, haven't abandoned you... lemme read it real quick.

Josgar
10-28-2007, 01:17 PM
try the following things:Set your graphics to Highest Performance. Balanced High Qualityand see what happens at those settings.

Thanks josgar, i'll try it and report back my findings.

SwiftSco
10-28-2007, 09:12 PM
Ok here are my findings, HQ very choppy and 5-10 fps with fraps - Balanced kinda choppy and 15-20 fps - HP still choppy but 20-25 fps, this is all running through qeynos harbor (from the boat bells to around the boat building area), because i know its a rough zone for video cards.

try turning off smooth fonts... they have a big performance impact.

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 07:43 AM
You're talking smooth fonts on windows desktop correct?

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 08:04 AM
Opps sorry to sound like such a noob, found it in game, just never messed with those options. Seems the fps has increased a little but still get the hiccups in graphics.

Killerbee3000
10-29-2007, 08:16 AM
you should have a nvidia symbol in your taskbar (somewhere on the right side along the other symbols there), right click it, go to quality options, have a look there is antialiasing and or anisotropic filtering is turned on, if they are on, turn them off, if not, then im afraid turing down the ingame graphics options further or upgrading would be the way to go.

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 09:17 AM
Ok i know AA and AF are turned on, but i dont really see any difference in game graphic wise either way, i'll turn them off completely and check the difference. If that doesnt help, what upgrades do you suggest? Thanks!

Killerbee3000
10-29-2007, 09:37 AM
well, the graphicscard is a bit on the lower end, it would be the first thing to upgrade.

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 09:45 AM
Lol, yeah figured you would say that, without totally replacing everything, i can only max it out with any 8x card..... any top of the line 8x suggestions (if thats possible anymore) Thanks

Killerbee3000
10-29-2007, 09:55 AM
well, agp is dieing out slowly but steadily... the radeon x1950 pro is avalaible with agp, approx 180$, its pretty much the only option though, the 7900 GS and 2600pro woudnt be enough of a upgrade to justify spending money on them and the 2900 pro / xt and 8800 series are pci-e only.

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 10:06 AM
Ok i'll look into the x1950 pro, (would the power supply i have, antec true power 500 watt, be enough for those cards?) i'll post my results turning the AA and AF off after work, thanks killerbee3000!

Killerbee3000
10-29-2007, 10:28 AM
your power supply should be able to keep up with the demand without any trouble.

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 12:06 PM
Ok if i do get a new graphics card, what steps need to be taken to completely wipe the old drivers, cache, files from my system. Also if i do go ati, what driver works good with the x1950 pro? Oh also, are the rest of the system specs ok for the game, cant upgrade a whole lot, can only go 3.4ghz max cpu and another 2gbs of ram, then the mobo is totatly maxed, are either of those a big improvement?

Killerbee3000
10-29-2007, 12:25 PM
well, upgrading the cpu woudnt help much, atleast not without changing a lot of other parts too to make it compatible with the latest cpu's. as for adding more ram, it woudnt help too much, because you would have to swtich to a 64 bit os to be able to use al of the 4 GB. for removing the drivers, have a look herefor the ati drivers, the official ones work just fine

Anything need to be done with the EQ2 files? Like eq2recent.ini or any others? Or will it auto redetect ok?

Kulaf
10-29-2007, 02:25 PM
First thing I would do is make sure that if you just reinstalled EQ2 that you defrag your HD. As for graphic lag in QH......well yer gonna get that even with a x1950 Pro because I have one and still do. QH is just a nasty zone with a lot of NPC models. Mind you it is very minor glitching.....but glitching none the less.

Killerbee3000
10-29-2007, 02:39 PM
nah.. you dont need to change anyhting in the eq2 files or suchqh is a nasty zone though if it comes to slowing down your system.... well, guild halls will prolly help with that since then the cities will be deserted...

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 02:58 PM
Lol, thanks guys, just ran there cause i know its rough on everything.

SwiftSco
10-29-2007, 08:43 PM
Ok a report on turning AA and AF off, AA wasnt enabled even with the eq2.ini file, no difference at all. AF i have decided to leave at 8x no fps loss there. Everything you have told me has helped a little bit, now only getting hiccups when coming into new players/npc's (and qeynos harbor of course). Are there any display settings in eq2 that really hog resources; without sacrificing the games good looks?

SwiftSco
10-30-2007, 05:11 PM
Suggestions?

Killerbee3000
10-31-2007, 08:42 AM
well, the ui is one of the biggest ressource hogs... you cant realy turn that off thoughshadows, smooth fonts, animations, number of high detail character models and flora are the usual suspects for slowing down the system

SwiftSco
10-31-2007, 10:01 AM
Ok have shadows, smooth fonts (thanks for that one), number of high detail characters is set to 4, and flora is off. I ordered a 1950pro anyhow, can i turn anything up more with it over the 6800? Thanks!

Killerbee3000
10-31-2007, 12:10 PM
texture quality, flora (without displacement), water and number of high quality characters are what you could most likely bump up a good bit

infy567
11-01-2007, 12:01 PM
EQ2 doesn't take advantage of AA and AF automatically. Create an EQ2.INI in your EQ2 directory and add the following line:r_aa_blit 1Your best bet is to totally turn off shadows. I have a beefy machine with two 6800 GTS 320mb cards in SLI and I can't play with shadows on.Print this guide out and use it.http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...?topic_id=17133It will really help you. Just remember that EQ2 renders shadows on the CPU rather than the GPU, so nobody will never be able to play with settings on max. I play with everything on 100% except shadows are turned off.

Killerbee3000
11-01-2007, 12:25 PM
shadows are bugged anywayits a great guide you linked there though

If you can live with crappy looking water......turn off all of the water effects. That will help in QH as well.
