Question regarding Mantis Bolt

I am playing around with the stamina line and my question is , in order to have the benefit of piercing damage fromMantis Bolt do I need to equip a piercing weapon or will it activate using a throwing weapon?I was under the impression that the skill line is primarily designed for use with throwing weapons however , although starsare considered piercing damage , I have never seen an increase in my piercing skill and I`m not sure if Mantis Bolt is actually working.I can see piercing damage on the log but it`s minimal at best.Thanks for your time.

It'll proc with any weapon you use, and it does piercing damage as opposed to the crushing that monks tend to dish out.

i havent looked at the line in a long time as i found it to be relatively useless for actual dps improvment over int/wis or int/wis/agi, but no the damage will proc off of any weapon type. keep in mind that procs proc off different things. since i havent looked at this one in a long time i cant remember, but if it says on successful MELEE attack then it means MELEE and not ranged, but if it says on successful attack it will proc off ranged, and if it says on ANY successful attack it will proc off spells as well as melee and ranged, both auto attack and combat arts.

Thank you for your input.I was actually surprised by how well these skills work once they are at maximum rank.At first I was a little skeptical about what seemed like an almost worthless amount of damage however , after killing a heroic archer using nothing more than these range attacks I soon realized their potential given the right circumstances . ( approx. 250 piercing dmg. per successful hit) .At this point though , it does not appear that my piercing skill has increased at all which I presume will only see an increase from using actualhand held weapons.

Uhh, I believe that Mantis Star is the ranged CA you get from the stamina line. Mantis Bolt is just a proc you get from your weapon. No relation. Also, a CA or weapon that does piercing damage does not necessarily use your piercing skill. For weapons it may very well do piercing damage and use your crushing skill. CAs have different damage types entirely and may not even use a skill check at all. Ranged attacks use the Ranged skill though, the type of ammo you're using determines what kind of damage it does.

The description of the skill " Mantis Bolt "Grants the Mantis Master a chance at an additional piercing attack with every successful hit in combat.Inflicts piercing damage on target.I am already aware that Mantis Star is a ranged attack that decreases stamina as my own Mantis Star is at maximum level.There certainly should be a relation if the throwing weapon your using does piercing damage .Why would there be no relation if your using a weapon that does piercing damage and Mantis Star also adds piercing damage ?That`s the point of this thread, to determine if Mantis Bolt procs off of throwing weapons that do piercing damage.If it does not , then it is not clear in the description of the skill , it should clearly state specific piercing weapons types as a requirement.

Mantis Bolt has a chance to proc piercing damage off any attack you do, possibly including ranged weapons, regardless of the damage type you inflict. Think of it like any other proc. It has it's own damage type (piercing), and can proc off any attack you do, regardless of the damage type. The damage type of your weapon is irrelevant. If you had a spiked fist item that did piercing damage or a baton that did crushing damage, Mantis Bolt would have a chance to proc an extra hit of piercing damage. I'm not sure if it includes ranged attacks, but if it did, and you had a throwing hammer that did crushing damage, it would have a chance to proc an extra hit of piercing damage. If you stay back and use only range attacks, do you get a ocmbat text message from mantis bolt procing?

Yes you are correct xOrtrunks , after more testing it is clear that Mantis Bolt will proc piercing damage off of any type of attack and is notdirectly related to any particular type of weapon.It will work with no weapon ( bare fists ) also.It simply adds a certain percentage of piercing damage usually following whatever attack is being initiated , generally an additional 90 - 300 piercing damage with each rank increasing proc chance by 3% .
