View Full Version : I can't patch EQ2 no matter what I do

I got a new computer today, installed EQ2 and was hoping to play it. Alas, no so. The patcher keeps downloading the same file over and over, and I have tried everything the knowledge base told me. Clean boot, defrag, checking for spy-ware, disabling anti-virus, disabling the firewall, you name it. A file downloads (something with char_mount_vfx, if that helps.) When the file is downloaded, the rest of the download is cancelled. When I restart, the same file downloads again, then cancels everything again. *sigh* Any tips? I'm running on Vista, btw. Even worse, something similar happened in WoW on my XP computer some months ago (downloaded 3%, then quit. I then downloaded the next 3%, then it quit. I could eventually have gotten all of it, but I want to play, not patch.) Even Lord of the Rings had some similar issues.

Oh look, another Vista user having game issues. Very common. Vista, due to the wisdom of Microsoft, changed the rules on installs made to Program Files. Guess where this game installs to by default? So you have a choice. Either run the game with UAC (User Account Control) disabled and setting the right click properties of the game to Run As Administrator (believe me, you are NOT running as administrator) or you can install the game to something other than the default directory such as "C:gamesSonyEverQuest II". Which gets around the issue entirely.

This works for me

keep in mind that this helps the MAJORITY of the people, but it may not help everyone with vista.first, locate the following files.LP_plugin.exeEQ2.exeEverQuest2.exethen for each one, right click them and then choose properties. from there you should see a button to "run as administrator" or something similar, i am not at my vista machine, so i cant remember exactly. in that window, look down it, and a little ways down, you will see a checkbox that does the same thing, but when checked, it runs each time the app is run and does not require you to do it each time it is run. also, there is a checkbox for the compatibility options. check that checkbox, and then make sure it is set to windows xp SP2 in the drop down just underneath it. it defaults to xp SP2, but i am just covering all the bases. then, if there is a button at the bottom of the window that says "apply" click it, then click ok. if there is no "apply" button, then just click ok. now, when you run from the shortcut on the desktop, you do not need to set it to run as admin every time you start it, and you should not have the LP_plugin error any longer either.

I am the only user on my computer, so I run everything as administrator. And as for where I installed it, I install every game under a c:Games folder. In this case it would be c:gamesEverQuest 2. I told you I've tried everything.

On Vista administrator (which you are running as) is actually what is classified as Power User under Windows XP. You are not running as ADMINISTRATOR which is the next level up.Please read this Computer World article about how Microsoft fools you on it.Which anti-virus program? If it's Norton I know that even if you "disable" it it is still running and can interfere with the game patching. Someone posted on this a couple of weeks ago. Also, are you running EU or US servers? If it's EU switch to the US side temporarily to patch the game then switch back to the EU to play. Folks are reporting some files being corrupted on the EU side.

I am using AVG, although with a Clean Boot (through msconfig -> startup -> disable everything) I really don't think it's a software problem. I know how to run as Administrator, and have tried that as well quite a few times. (I did even mention I am running as Adminstrator). Switch server? Right now I don't even have one. I installed the All-In-One pack, but it just keeps updating the same thing over and over.

Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

Mean on the Launchpad. It'll show as either being US or EU.

Maybe I'm tired or something, but I can't find anything that mentions what server I am using? From the top, it's Autoplay Off, the downloading and remaining time, Updating, Cancel, Character Select unavaliable, chat, My account, support, Preferences (greyed out), Update notes, station players, Adventure packs (greyed out) and Expansion packs (greyed out). That's it. No server anywhere.

That is the screen for which you choose the region located at the top right of the window. Are you set at English [US] or English [UK]?

Found it, thanks. The extra download doesn't bother me (just got the compute, as I said, and have 300GB free hard drive space). Let's just see if this can work. But if it doesn't, it might be a modem problem. I have had similar problems in pretty much every MMORPG I have ever played, from WoW to Cabal, on both Vista and XP. Weird.

Just a quick question while I remember it. I tried updating Vanguard, but it took just above 17 hours. I left it on over night, and when I got home from work the next day, it was still four hours left. I waited impatiently, but noticed the timer counted down four seconds, then popped back up again over and over. The broadband had disconnected (cable modem), and when I restarted, I had to download everything all over again. Which, of course, I didn't. Does EQ2 have this problem? Or is a file downloaded the first time, so I can simply quit and pick up where I left later on?

Having the same problem with xp pro just downloading the same patch files over and again :/

I switched to the US server and got a message saying I have to download a few more files. This doesn't bother me, so I tried. The "problem file" was quickly downloaded, and after a few more files, it cancelled. I noticed AVG Anti-virus having finished updating itself (without my permission), so I suspect that might be why the update cancelled this time. I restarted, and right now it seems to be working fine. Weird. It's three hours left, so we'll just have to wait and see if it works. It seems fine right now, though.

Disclaimer: I know nothing!

My belief is that they are pushig down RoK content along with the new update. This happened before the last expansion pack went live and lots of people had the same issues. You MIGHT be able to solve this by disabling "optional content" for "immediate download". But it seems you cannot get to the "preferences" section until you have completed the update. So, "catch 22" is at work here.

It works now, thanks. I have finished updating, started the game, created a Ratonga necromancer and reached level 5. I like the game so far. I don't like how the Froglok move, but that's a minor detail. Feel free to close this topic now, as the game works.

Unlike XP which the administrator account was a true administrator with full rights
