<p>i see ram is dropping in price and was going to buy a few more gigs.</p><p>how can i tell what kind of ram my motherboard uses?</p><p>got a dell dimension 8400</p><p>i see there is different pins and such for the ram modules.</p>

It'll tell you the shipped configuration of your box. With that information you can figure out what you have - or actually, you ca go to most memory manufacturer's site and just use thier configurator (e.g. Corsair gives <a href="http://www.corsair.com/configurator/system_results.aspx?id=47491" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.corsair.com/configurator...s.aspx?id=47491</a> as the result for your system, looks like you've got DDR2-533, AKA PC2-4200).</p><p>Keep in mind that the number of free DIMM slots you have, and what you've populated them with can impact your performance (DIMMS must be matching pairs to do interleaving properly, and if you fill all 4 slots, the bus loading requires that all modules run at slower timing). Also, if you install more than 3GB of memory, in addition to the previous considerations, <a href="http://www.dansdata.com/askdan00015.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">you may not benefit from memory above 3GB</a>.</p>
