I am a level 26 SK, I want to pick up one or the other. Looking through the forums, there are alot of old postings so I am unsure if Tinkering is as bad as some of the posts are leading me to believe. I also read that Transmuting takes way longer.I am less interested in selling, and more interested in boosting all my own stuff, like adorenments. I am an armorer so which of the 2 sublcasses, either Tinkering or Transmuting will help my armor more. I am big into Vampric or Heal on hit effects, let me keep going like a mad man.Selling what I make is a cool idea, but is very secondary to boosting myself. I also was reading about tinkered items (Overclocked Lifestone for example) are they locked to the person, meaning that I need to be a Tinkerer to get one?Sorry for such a noob posting, but that is what I am

Now, i'm by no means an expert, but my general experience has been that, first off, transmuting is VERY expensive to start from scratch. Starting as a new character, I'm not too sure you'll have the cash flow for it until you hit max level. That being said, it doesn't really matter. The tinkering items are nice in some cases, but that is only a few cases, and other than that, they're just fun items. Also, I've found that except for weapon adornments, which are very cheap on the broker, most adornments aren't worth the cost to make them unless you are selling them. I would just go with whichever sounds more fun to you

If you go into Transmuting you will be able to supply your Primary Craft with the required Adornment Supplies. It is costly regardless of how you do it. (Time or Money or Both) Upside is that everyone needs what you can create. Downside is that you do as well ..

If you go into Tinkering you will be able to USE many of the Tinkered items on your Adventurer to supplement their DPS and/or utility. There are many fun items, yes, but there are a couple of really cool situational helpers that can help you kill faster or even help you survive to fight another day. Tinkering is costly in terms of Harvests. As you progress in Tinkering the more and MORE harvests are required. Major items needed are Loam & Ore. Harvests that are already in high demand. Upside is that you have quite a few little items that sell decently to help supplement your fuel money.

Sanity is optional for any of the above choices.

This one really is debatable. A lot of Tinkered items are usable only by Tinkers, so many feel it's a waste to make a non-Adventurer a Tinker. Tinkering is very harvesting heavy. As noted frequently, you can do Transmuting fast, or cheap, but not both. Both are much slower than the traditional tradeskills to level.

Id personally recomend tinkering in this situation. Almost everythin you make is something you can use, with level requirements the main limit, and there are somre neat toys among many useless items. Transmuting will allow you to make adornments for your weapons and transmuted 'raws' for other crafters. To be able to support your own adornment needs (if you want to be able to get all slots) you will need access to pretty much every tradeskill class as you as a transmuter can only make for two slot, ie primary and secondary. Transmuting is a usefull ability but its not good at making you self supportive so to speak. Your armourer would be able to give you a few more slots covered tho. Tinkering wouldnt help your armourer all that much, you can buy tinkered +success items as well as harvest tools etc, things like mana/life stones are tinkerer only. I have both transmuter and tinkerer, but I also have almost all tradskill classes in tier7 as well tho, if I didnt have that I wouldnt enjoy transmuting much I think.

I would advise everyone against Transmuting. It is hideously expensive and you're missing out on the things you can get from tinkering. If I hadn't spent atleast 300-400 plat in getting my transmuter to 350/350, I'd drop it and start tinkering.

Friends don't let friends become transmuters.
