View Full Version : What affects selling price?

When I put stuff in the broker, it has pre-set price, but when I take those to NPC vendors, they never buy them with the price. I heard good tradeskill guild faction increases the price which vendors buy from us. Is it still true and how much it affects the price?

No, faction doesn't affect price. NPC merchants only pay the fuel costs of a crafted item. On the broker, however, it seems to add in the broker markup to that cost.

There's two things here: broker vs. vendor, and crafted vs. dropped item. For crafted items, you can sell to a vendor for fuel cost. AFAIK all vendors/merchants buy crafted goods for exactly fuel cost, no more, no less. When you put a crafted item up on the broker, the initial price is IIRC the fuel cost. Normally you set a higher price based on the market rather than staying with the fuel-cost-based initial price. That's just there because anything on the broker has to have a price, and to enable the broker board to red-flag items listed at below that price (ie. you're selling a crafted item for less than it cost you in fuel to make it).For dropped/looted items, the broker sets an initial price of, again IIRC, the highest amount any NPC will buy that item for and red-flags items listed at a lower price. Again, you usually search for similar items and set a higher price. Not all NPCs will buy back for that highest vendor price, though. Most will pay a lesser amount. I've found the city status merchants generally offer the best prices, followed by the various faction NPCs and the housing merchant in the villages. NPCs outside the cities generally offer the worst deals (ie. they charge the most and pay the least for stuff). You'll have to try different vendors to get a feel for what they offer for loot, but I generally stick to a few that I know overall offer better prices. The price you set on the broker is also not counting the broker fee. When you list something, there's a variable fee applied (the buyer pays it but you don't get it, the broker keeps it for himself). If you've the veteran's reward sales display, it's 10% of your listed price. Otherwise, it's 20% for same-alignment buyers and 40% for opposite-alignment buyers. If you have sales crates/displays placed in your house people can come and buy directly from your displays, in which case they avoid the broker fee and pay only your listed price.

Almost all vendors buy it with 6G.A NPC vendor at the NFP Inn and armorsmith in Stonestair Byway buy it with 4G 50S.Weaponsmith in Stonestair Byway buys it with 3G 60S.So, it seems I just have to avoid those 3 vendors. If you know better NPC, please let me know. I ckecked city status merchants, but they just offered me 6G for it.

That is how the pre-set price came up. Thanks Calthine. When I price the adept1 spell 7G 20S, it said "You may be able to get more money from a merchant". I think this confused me. I would rather see the normal vendor price instead of the vendor price + 20% broker fee so that I could know if I should sell it on the broker or sell it to a NPC vendor.

You will get the highest prices from innkeepers and in the merchant in TS instances. There are some others who pay the same, the guys selling boat tickets in EFP & QH, faction houses merchants, and menders seem to also pay primo price. I have always wondered what changes this as my boyfriend and I have even had price differences on our characters with these guys.

Supposedly the really good price (+20%) is from the distressed merchants after you rescue them. They apparantly are the best paying NPC merchants in the game and its their price that shows up on the broker window.

..... I'm too lazy to actually save one and check this though, but it has been said so many times on other threads that I'll repeat it here

From what I have observed, the origional vendors placed in the game varried their buy rates. City Merchants and wholesale vendors gave you the best buy rates. The other merchants in city areas gave you less when they bought stuff. Out of town merchants (TS/Nek docks, crossroads, trading post, feerrott spire, ect) gave you slightly above half of what a city merchant would give you. Actual faction merchants would give a varying amount depending on the amout of faction you had.

This started changing about the time that DoF came out. Newly introduced merchants (for the most part) gave the "best" price that City Merchants and wholesalers did. Now its very rare to find a merchant that doesn't give the best price. Especially when the merchants were revamped to carry fuel and recipes to support the in-town crafting stations. I believe that most of the new merchants were coded to behave as wholesalers, while a few older merchants kept the same behavior. There wern't many of the older merchants around so its more of a shock/suprise when you find them.

I still carry around a few items I know the best vendor value for. If the price of any of these items isn't what I expect, I'll pass on to another merchant.

FYI: most of the distressed merchants I've ever run into seem to sell items only. I haven't seen one willing to buy stuff for quite a while. Its too bad that those distressed merchants that offer to sell items don't have anything worth buying. Hmm...that might be a good topic for another forum.
