Thought is was time for a new flash fiction challenge. I won't promise any prizes (not fair to give awards, if I post an entry too). I'm kind of hoping this will jump start my muse (last seen before I sent my kids to grandma's for the week, so she might be in Kansas w/ my flash drive), but I really want to see what some of the new and 'seasoned' authors can come up with.

The Rules:

1) Each entry is due by 24 Sep (gives you two weekends to work on your posts).

2) Each entry MUST contain all of the following references: A) Leaves B) Pumpkin(s) C) some mention of a Norrathian god (returned or completely inactive-see EQ1, if needed for "missing gods" ) of the author's choice (or as 'requested' by the Good Evil Queen).

3) No limits on length, but remember the entry date. (So yes, your entry could be as short as "Bristlebaine ate the pumpkin leaves, " but now I've already done that one.)

4) If you are going to put the R rating in MMORPG, please indicate at the beginning of the entry that is a 'adult themed' or 'mature readers only' post.

/wanders off distractedly trying to remember if we actually have any 'mature' readers on the board...

edit for random smilely

Happy Talk-Like-A-Pirate day everyone. (PG rating for this one. Not as adult themed as my norm, but still not G rated. <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img src=" width="15" height="15" />">

As she contemplated the skyline, Cillia became aware that the patterns on the surface of Norrath reminded her of how the moonlight filtered through the trees, shadows dancing as the wind rustled through the branches.

Chuckling soundlessly at herself, the Feir'Dal gave herself a gentle reprimand. ‘Its well and fine to be contemplatively, just don't forget where you are. You might walk the way of peace, but others don't.'

Focusing back on the task at hand the for'ward lookout scanned the horizon. ‘No storms tonight,' she thought as the wavelets lightly danced on the sea's surface, ‘but the Sea Furies will be furious to lose you, girl.' Her hand lightly stoked the wooden railing of the ship. Absently rubbing her hand, the sailor wore off some of the tinting oil polysolvent that got on her earlier. A smile danced on her lips as she remembered hanging off the stern of the ship in the rope chair. It wasn't easy to keep the tint oil off herself, but she enjoyed the feeling of ‘flying' off the side of the moving ship and it was worth it to obliterate the hateful name "Scorn's Mistress," as the Freeport pirates had renamed the ship.

The renamed "Prexian Pride" was a good fast ship, but even the sheets of a fine sailing boat can catch poor winds and bad luck, once in a while. Thus QSS, recently captured by the Freeboooters, had been liberated back to the Antonican fleet.

Eyes swept over the ocean's surface...alert for the smallest detail. The sooner a problem was noticed, the sooner the crew could make preparations. For that reason alone, the crew on duty that night were almost all Elven. Use the best eyes for the worst conditions. Just enough sailors to fight the ship, the prize crew was aware the safest course of action was to get to a safe port, Qeynos Harbor, as soon as the winds would let them.

Repeating the examination of the sky and sea, Cillia felt confident. The moon overhead was bright and round as a pumpkin. It would be hard to see any better even in the full noonday sun.

‘Now that was odd.' The woman leaned into the railing trying to get a clearer look. She heard a solid tread on the deck behind her. Without taking her eyes from the patch of water, she spoke softly but clearly to the shipmate who had walked up behind her. "Hogart, go ask the Mate for the Gnomish Glass. It's probably nothing, but the water looks odd over there." She pointed to the unusually colored area. "Probably just a patch of sea-tussah that floated loose, but best to check."

"Aye, I see it...right back with tha glass." Cillia smiled to herself. Hogart was still young, and fairly excitable, but the ship's boy was smart and serious about his duties. Someday when she got her own ship, he might be worth having in her crew.

When the boy handed her the glass and stood by the rail, the pair were the same height. He could almost pass for an adult Feir'Dal in build, though a slightly stocky Feir'Dal, even though the Norther boy was only 12 turnings old.

"What can ya see?"

"It's not sea-tussah, and definitely not a frostfin..."

"The wee beasties?" asked the lad, referring to the tiny animals in the sea. The child was fascinated with them after he learned that the pico-creatures, when startled or scared by the passage of a large object, would give off a ghost-light glow in the water.

"No, I don't think so...Pexus below! Have the mate steer to intercept. I think its someone in the water. Go boy." As the child ran to the helm, Cillia slipped off her shoes, leggings an outer-tunic. The flash of light she saw reflected didn't move in time with the sea and didn't have the soft quality of the sea reflecting the moon. The flash she saw was clearer, like the manifestation of light from metal or glass.

She heard the crew aloft adjusting the sails, and felt the deck change pitch as "Pride" heeled under the helmsman's commands. By the time the sleeping crew made it's way topside, Cillia was ready to slip into the sea for a rescue.

‘Definitely someone there. Father Prexus please give him back to us.' The Elf rechecked the sheath of her knife, clambered up on the railing, and dove into the water.

The tall youth sat down next to her and set a mug of hot coffee on the deck next to her. "The Mate thought you might need this."

"Thank you, Hogart. The sea's pretty cool tonight." Even in a dry tunic, she still shivered as she regeared. Trying to be helpful, the boy handed her parts of her kit, the eye patch used to keep night-sight in one eye, the belt for her cutlass, and finally her crown. As the youngster slightly caressed the leaves of her flowered headdress, Cillia turned slightly so the Norther couldn't see her face as she buckled the belt. ‘So that's how it is. You're a bit young for those kind of thoughts...then again...you should get your clan-mark in a year or two.'

"It's an enchantment, to keep the flowers fresh. I'm a sailor to my soul, but still love my flowers." The woman carefully turned on the charm and the youth believe that the pre-dawn darkness hid his blush.

"Thank you, Captain. This is everything you recovered?"

"Yes, Admiral. Our healer was unable to call the spirits back, but she was able to preserve the bodies. The Erudian was already dead. The Gnome said ‘The Sea Lord. The Traveler has returned.' before he also died."

"This craft is fantastic. The crown appreciates the discretion of your crew. And this is the relic? So Prexus has returned as well? What are the gods playing at now?"

"Captain, Please leave the guard posted. In two days, you may remove the guard. You won't see them, but by that time the crown's men will have removed the items from the wardroom. Hopefully we can determine what these unfortunates were up to, how they built the deep-ship and if they were working for Freeport or on their own."

"We won't be able to properly reward your crew for this discovery, but the Queen will be very ‘appreciative' of your recovery of the Prexian Pride." Opening the hatch, the Mate...now Captain of the Prexian Pride followed the Admiral out of the stateroom.

Wiping a tear from his eye Niko gazed longingly out the window of his apartment by the docks. He loved and hated his troll boy all at the same time. Their love may have been like a fluttering leaf on the wind but he remembered in all the same.

Gwarsh had been wounded, stuck down by the foul bartender and a poorly timed hellcat spawn, in Unrest. Niko had run to his side after finishing off the mean ole kitty. But that evil Gian with her heart shaped bottom and buxom breasts. She'd rushed in and healed Gwarsh with her magic.

That wasn't enough for the tramp. She'd lured him in with her confections and sealed the deal with a sweet pumpkin pie. By Innurok's own testicles she was an evil one.

Stepping away from the window Niko took his place at the table to finish the last of the rantonga toes and baked Fae that he had left over from the last flash fiction.
