My wife and I are just getting into EQ2 from a long break from EQ1. I am going to play a mystic (and tank) and she wants to play a conj. (she has to have a pet to send in) My question is, is this a viable duo? How far can we take this duo? What would be another class to compliment the mystic that has a pet and/or does good dps without meleeing?

I guess it is possible to do a mystic/conj duo, but if you two are equally equipped you are going to have a lot of problems holding agro to tank. What is most likely to happen is that her pet or her will end up tanking.

The classes with pets: shaman (dogdog with 1 aa) necros (you will have similar problems with agro with the conj), illusionist and coercer. I don't know how well the last two would work out with you trying to tank. The coercer though gets their pet in the form of a charm, just a warning.

any class in this game is viable as a duo. so, why not mystic/conj?spec the mystic to melee and tank with it and i bet you will have no problems regarding aggro either... or make the conj tank pet tank etc... lots of options, just try to avoid the conjurer tanking thou ++Xan

I precisely run this setup once in awhile twoboxing. One thing, you need to know is that preward=agro, a very good one at that too.Without prewarding each battle, you might have agro issue for mystic tank.So if you are thinking of doing this, go do those quests with your wife for aas.It might help if you level-lock at least in the beginning as you really do lvl too fastin the beginning anyway and getting your mystic aa converted to dps helps a ton.I've actually tanked DFC once when a tank crapped out with LD and never came back.We just kill the first named blob in the sewer so we were locked for 18hrs and spamming for another tank didn't result in anything so I decided to tank itto see how far we can go. The group had 3 dps + lowbie pally.Battles took a little longer each time but since I was the sole healer and a tank,so prewarding my group was a must anyway. I would preward grp. Pulled with either aoe debuff, body, or snare nuke. Then I single warded myself and kept nuking away.To my surprise, I was able to keep agro like no one's business,of course with preward and careful use of aoe CA. It did help that my aa's were very high and was fully CA & dps specced. With a mediocre group without a tank, we cleared DFC with almost no death. Can you imagine? This was after the revamp also so we had to deal with kb, charm, fear and all that also. There were times when I've gone in there with a full group with a tank and got wiped soof course, I was pleasantly surprised at this feat and was happy to hear that I tanked very well. There are three healers with melee spec: inquisitor, mystic, warden with dps potential in that order. But I believe mystic is the only class that can take advantage of preward for agro control. After this experience, now when I have to twobox, I always try to include my mystic in some fashion as I find him very versatile in healing, dps and tanking even.

Thank you very much for the responses. I like the options EQ2 has with each class to accomodate the individuals play style.

You should be able to tank fine as a Mystic. How far you can take it? That I don't know since my baby Mystic is only 40 and he has soloed fine on his own against heroic encounters. Preward, group or single target slow, unload your CAs (what's great about using CAs over spells is the insta cast times), debuff, ward again and cycle.

Conj + Mystic is a great combo. Have a lvl 70 of each.

When you get to high 60s planeshift + bolster the tellurian champion for a fun time.

If you want to use the tank pet, spec mystic for DPS.

Summoner STA-3 line can allow you to 100% move the pet hate up one position on the list every 10 seconds, great for maintaining aggro.

However, earth pets DPS sucks really really bad.

A specced out air pet might be more fun...especially if it is feasible to add in the mana shield ability to it.

What makes the mystic + conj more viable as a duo than others is the mystics attack speed and DPS debuffs. Makes handling damage spikes much better. Both characters can heal the pet. Blazing avatar is great for racking up the aggro real fast.

Question: You can change your specialization (specs) on your character as you wish? So I can be a melee mystic spec today and tomorrow be a healer mystic spec or dps mystic spec?

However, you must visit the mage gulid and talk to a woman to get the option to change your specification. This will cost you 10g the first time and 1p each subsequent time (at least from what I know as I've never spent 1p for a respec). Now, when the new expansion comes out there will be an item you can obtain that will allow you to store a specification while you are currently spec'd another way, allowing you to have, in effect, two specifications to choose from at any given time. Though the details about this item are still unknown to me.

You should however get one free change by default for both trees (after they made their initial changes to our achievement lines) plus a card that gives you 5 free charges to change each tree (you have to hail the achievement counsel found in your local mage guild to get these).

Regarding the specialization change, I remember reading that it was announced at this years Fain Faire that the devs are planning to implement a feature (I believe I read a house-item) that will allow you to save two different AA specs, that you will be able to swap between at will. So you could have one for general grouping, and one for raiding, or however you'd like it (healing/dps spec in this case).

I duoed with a conjy guildmate from our mid-20s all the way to 70. The conjy was defensively speced at the time so his pet tanked, I healed. It worked very well.

I think the necro would be the better choice to duo with a mystic. Both are good but necro buffs and spells suit that duo better imo.

A conjy scout pet with a defensive stance makes a pretty good tank. Add that with a mystics wards, and you have a decent tank. Specc melee for mystic and you can take a bit out
