Hey all, I'm new to the world of Everquest and just started playing yesterday. I'm just wondering why running the game on a 3.0 Core 2 Duo E6850 with 2 gigs of 1066 ram and an 8800 GTX vid card on 1650 X 1050 resolution why Im only getting around 30-40 Fps on High Quality setting this is with vsync enabled....is this normal? I can play games like Bioshock at 55-60 FPS on the highest settings but for some reason a game that was made almost 3 years ago is bringing my PC to its knees. Any suggestions or is this normal for a system of my specs. I want to run the game on extreme but that just brings it down to like 15-20 FPS and that is not good for me.

You gotta remember that games like this tend to eat performance more then offline games, cause you have people running around with loads of different textures (different armours and stuff) while an fps normally has less character textures. The game was made 3 years ago, but they made an engine that wouldn't get outdated so fast. When it released, you had to have a great computer to run it decently above balanced settings.

I'm playing on a four year old computer... upgraded memory and graphics card, of course. My average FPS is anywhere from 22 to 35 (on balanced/ high performace mode) depending on what zone I'm in and whether or not I'm grouping. So I wouldn't consider anything below 30 to be "unplayable". A bit laggy at times, sure... unplayable, no.

To the OP... on my computer I rejoice when I get anything over 30 fps. However, for your computer, I don't know what the average FPS is. I *do* know that EQII is an extremely demanding game and there are issues with duel core and Vista that you can read about over at the Tech Forum. If you can play on High Quality at 30-40 fps, I'd say you are luckier than quite a few of us. I don't know WHAT super duper turbo machine is needed to play EQII in Extremem Performance but after two and half years of playing and my fair share of tech issues, I *do* know that EQII is not only a demanding game for your CPU, it's also rather fickle and you have to experiment to see what works for your computer.

Good luck!

This game was also designed with single core processors in mind during a time when single core processors were basically at their peak. So it is taxing on a top of the line single core processor. Then the industry switched to multiple core processors. Something this game takes absolutely no advantage of other than if you are running other junk in the background. But as far as the actual game is concerned only one of your cores is doing anything. That is why I can run eq2 with a two year old computer(top of the line back then) as well as someone with a fancy new machine. At least this is what I gather from the various threads in the tech help forum.
