View Full Version : Forgotten Providence (Mature)

Chapter 1

It had rained earlier in the day. The heat of summer wouldn't be chased away by the strongest of storms however, and so now the night was oppressively hot and muggy. On most days the breeze off the ocean would help alleviate the discomfort of the citizenry but that wasn't the case this night. It seemed that all the wind in Norrath had been part of the earlier storm and thus spent Freeport was left to wallow in the stifling heat and humidity left behind.

Most doors had been thrown open and windows unshuttered in a feeble attempt to allow whatever wind found its' way into the city a way into the homes and businesses there. Most lights were out at this time of night. However, in this particular corner of the Overlord's city on a nondescript side street light spilled out of the open windows and doorway of a local tavern. While most taverns were loud and raucous with the goings on of its patrons this one only offered out music. Such sweet angelic music was a rarity in most times and places, but here and now it served to make this tavern well known to the denizens, not only of this quarter, but to the whole of Freeport. It was quietly, yes very quietly for one never knew what ears might be overhearing, whispered that some people of great import had come to hear. They wore disguises of course, but so and so had seen through it well enough to spread the tales.

This pleased the tavern's proprietor right well. A short squat human male with a receding hairline and large bulbous nose Taliesin was known for his greed. Most people called him Tal, not out of fondness, but because it was easier to pronounce. The tavern he ran had been your average hole in the wall until he'd picked up the two bards who sang and played for the crowd each night. Rumor had it he'd bought them as slaves to work the kitchen for him only to find out later their true talents. Now they brought him more money by singing for hours on end each and every night. He implemented new policies cash in on his new little gold mine. There was now a two drink minimum or a drink and a meal. If a customer wished neither of those she/he was required to pay a fee for sitting and listening to the music.

News of his new found success had reached the ears of the local militia. They'd paid a visit to him not that long ago and had raised the fee required to ensure the tavern's continual safe operation. This had set sorely on Tal's conscious, but there being no other recourse than to pay he'd handed over the money. Even with the larger protection fee he was still making money off those two Fae hand over fist. He was now able to offer not only the 2 copper meal but also a meal comprised of somewhat better fare for which he charged 1 silver. Tonight's 2c special was griffon stew and jumjum pie. The 1s meal would treat a customer to Sabertooth casserole and peach sorbet.

Tal noticed a new customer had taken up residence at the far end of the bar and made his way down to him. He ordered a mug of Dwarven Ale and Tal offered him both meals. The man chose the stew and Tal made his way back to the kitchen to fetch him a bowl and plate. When he returned he saw the hooded figure watching the two girls on stage singing. That wasn't odd, everyone in the place but him usually was entranced by them, he wasn't sure why but he thought this man knew the two girls. Years of running a tavern in Freeport had trained Tal very well. He didn't ask the man any questions. He just set down the meal and took the man's money and went about his business. Better safe than sorry around here.

He couldn't believe it. It was them, after all this time he'd finally found them. It seemed he'd paid a good price for the information after all. They looked alright, well fed and not beaten (at least where their clothing showed skin). That was more than he'd hoped for. The only problem was that the tavern's owner would not want to part with his two money makers. He'd have to pay dearly to remove them from his service. Luckily he'd been given enough money for just such a circumstance. His employer had foreseen many obstacles and had planned rather well for them all. At long last he'd be able to return home. All he had to do was to approach the tavern master and strike the bargain. Not tonight though, tonight he'd eat the meal and listen to the songs. Tonight he'd relish the fact that he'd finally found them and would be able to return.

At least that's what he planned. What he hadn't foreseen, what he couldn't have known, was that the militia would bust in right then and attempt to seize all persons in the tavern. Alastair leapt up from his seat and made his way through the crowd to the two women who were pressed up against the wall to the rear of the makeshift stage. Grabbing a wrist of each Fae he began dragging them bodily out the side door he'd spied earlier in the day. They put up a fight, and were surprisingly strong for their size, but he was able to subdue them both with a sharp twist to their wrists.

"Like it or not you two are coming with me. My master paid quite well to have you brought to him and go you shall. The Freeport Jail is no place for you two at any rate." he growled at them. Wide-eyed they shot a look at each other but resisted him no further. He led them through back alleys until they reached what he'd sought - the sewer entrance. He kicked the cover off and bid them to climb down. They balked at the stench but the tip of his blade persuaded them into action. He followed and replaced the cover after them. No one bothered coming to the Thieves' Way unless they were avoiding the guards. Traveling in silence they made their way through the dank caverns that made up the first layer of the sewer system. The stench was ripe and except for the odd creature they came across the journey was uneventful. Finally they reached the grating he'd been leading them toward and they made their way back up into Freeport proper.

They were in East Freeport and he took them immediately to the docks to catch a ship for Nektulous Forest. Once on board and out of the Overlord's grasp he began to ask after their welfare. They were fine, they assured him, but they were apprehensive of him which was to be expected in the situation. He wanted to explain something to them, to give them something to hold onto, but he'd been explicitly instructed not to reveal anything to the sisters. He might be a rogue and a scoundrel but he knew at least how to follow instructions. He looked them over again searching for any new wounds but couldn't find any.

"So, which one of you is Keala and which one is Lieke?"

Again they shared a look between them and the one on the right spoke up. "I am Keala, this is my sister Lieke. How do you know our names and why did you take us from Tal? Who is this master of yours? Where are we going?" The concern was written all over her tiny, light blue, face. He could see it in the depths of those strange pupil-less eyes that her race had, hers being a deep dark red color. It was rather unnerving. However the thought of what would happen to him should he disobey was even more unnerving.

"I can't answer any of your questions I'm afraid. I can tell you that while you are in my custody I will protect you both and see no harm comes to either of you. That will have to suffice for now."

The arrived at the docks in Nektulous and disembarked with the other passengers. The docks were bustling with activity and he had to take hold of each sister yet again to ensure they wouldn't get separated. They made their way, not to any other boat, but to the griffon station. He instructed the griffon tamer to send them all to the N'Mars Ascent station and off they went. They all rode the same animal as he was feign to let them ride their own and possibly escape him. They both seemed to enjoy the ride however, and when they landed he could see both exhilaration and disappointment play across their faces. Whatever else the Fae were, they weren't good at hiding emotions.

He began to lead them to their destination when he heard movement to the right of them. Instructing them not to move he disappeared into the darkness. Keala looked to her sister and nodded. They both stealthed themselves and moved toward the mountain side he'd left them near and waited. They waited for what seemed like hours, breath coming in small ragged pieces due to their heightened sense of awareness and fear. Finally someone began approaching their position. It wasn't the man that had taken them from Tal, he had been a Feir'Dal. He'd been using a Teir'Dal illusion, but that was easy to see through if you were well enough trained as they had been. No, this man was larger by the sound of his footsteps. They saw him arrive into the small clearing dragging the Feir'Dal along with him.

"A'ight, come on oot, aye know ya'rrr therrre. No need ta be hidin'. Ole Haydn won't be hurtin ye. I's been sent to delivers ye frrrom this herrre rrrascal. Now come on oot, and we can be on ooorrr way." The gigantic barbarian waited a few moments before he walked straight towards them and with his free hand grabbed them both. Then with all of them in his massive hands he began moving off in a different direction than the first man had been taking them.

<Edit for title (thanks Niko!!) and mature warning (forgot the warning the first time heh). >

It is a promising start so stop fretting over what mean old Niko has to say

on a seperate note I think that I really need another post or two to get a grasp before I can offer a suto title. The master (Ekuthh) is out of comission so I'm not exactly sure how much time he spends kicking around on here. But if you want to PM me your outline I'll see what I can suggest. If that doesn't work it only took Ekuth two posts on Tise of the Darkhanded to get a title >.<

Outline? ROFL I don't have one. It just kinda comes out as I write it. I have a vague sense of where I want it to go, but that's about it. Plenty of twists and turns though I assure you . But thanks for the offer, I'll definitely take you up on any help you care to give (no matter how mean hehe).

Chapter 2

The Halasian's large meaty hand dug into Keala's waist making it almost impossible to breathe. All she could see from her vantage point was the back of his feet as he made his way through the forest in the dead of night. She had to think of something fast. If this went on much longer she would pass out and by the way Lieke was acting she was feeling the same effects. She thought through all the possibilities as best she could but the stars that started to form in her field of vision distracted her. And then like a candle suddenly light in a darkened room, an idea filled her mind.

"Lieke," she whispered "do you remember Mom's lullaby she used to sing us?" Lieke faintly nodded between her gasps for breath. "Sing it with me now and we'll make him sleep so we can go free." Again came the faint nod. Keala began to sing as strongly as she could and was joined by her sister. After about two minutes they noticed his grip had loosened somewhat so they could breath easier and sing stronger. As they did his grasp loosened more and more until they were able to work themselves free. They stayed with him though, singing on and on until he finally crashed to the ground with a loud, resounding snore echoing off the nearby hillside. The sisters hugged each other fiercely and looked down on the two unconscious figures.

"Shouldn't we tie them up before we go? We don't want them coming after us anytime soon." Lieke frowned at the men, their would be captors.

"While I agree with you heartily sister dearest, how do you propose we do that? We have no rope nor are any vines handy. We've done the best that we could for now. He" Keala pointed to Haydn "should sleep for quite some time to come. Seeing how we don't know how long the other will be unconscious we should be making our way from here post haste."

Lieke grudgingly shrugged and accepted her sister's words. She was right they had no way to tie the men up. But that didn't stop the diminutive Fae from gliding over to them and giving each a swift strong kick in the stomach they'd be sure to feel upon waking. She then moved to follow her sister back to the griffon station they'd just left. The forest was so different from Greater Faydark. Here it seemed to be dark and gloomy even in daylight, whereas Greater Faydark seemed bright and cheery even in the deepest part of night. She felt a chill run down her spine and shivered. She would be glad to leave this forsaken place behind them and never return.

The griffon tamer didn't seem surprised to see them again so quickly, and without their male companion. Dutifully he helped them mount one of the beasts and sent them down to the docks station. Keala's mind was racing with possible destinations. They'd tried hiding in a city and that didn't seem to work. No matter that she'd paid the slave trader and Tal to support the rumor that they'd been bought slaves (and nearly were for the pittance of the earnings Tal had shared with them). It was the only reasonable cover for two Fae in being in Freeport at that time. Keala reached down and felt the small money pouch, full of gold, still in its secret hiding spot. Tal hadn't believed in banks and so she'd been able to slowly get back their rightful portion of their earnings.

It hit her then that it was most likely the slave trader that had tipped the henchman off. He'd probably paid him more than the girls had been able to and so the trader would've told him exactly whom they'd been "sold" to with a clear conscience. Once again she realized that the only person other than herself that she could trust was her sister. This time the fewer people that knew their whereabouts the better, so a city, village, or any other type of town was out of the question. No it would have to be something as far from civilization as possible. Somewhere inhospitable and remote would be what they wanted.

Landing at the docks station they thanked the tamer and headed over to the docks themselves. So many travelers made their way to their different destinations that the girls blended into the crowd giving Keala a bit more time to think. She looked over at her sister. It was her fault Lieke was caught up in all this. She never should have brought her with her in the first place, but neither of them could bear being apart. She had to protect her and keep her safe. No matter what became of her she would make certain Lieke was protected.

"Well, wherever we end up settling we can't go there straight away. That'd be too easy for them to track so we'll have to take a roundabout way. I know you don't like boats much little sister, but we have to make sure that as many people possible see us going to as many different locations as we can. It'll make it harder for them to find us."

At the mention of an extended boat trip Lieke's green eyes widened in horror. The trip from Butcherblock to Nektulous Forest had almost been her undoing. Now her sister was asking, no telling, her that they would do it again. Different boats to different places in an attempt to lead false trails until finally settling in some out of the way place. She wasn't feeling very thrilled at the prospect but they didn't have much of a choice. It had proved exceedingly difficult to stay one step ahead of Caerwyn and Morgen. The thought of what those two wanted to do with them sent a chill to her very core. Her stomach flip-flopped as if she was already on a ship and her mouth went dry. She clenched her fists as she broke out into a cold sweat and nodded her head. She could do this, no she would do this.

Knowing that her sister had just showed the most bravery Keala had seen in her life, she led them to the first boat. She asked the captain where they were heading and purchased passage for the two of them. They settled down out of the way of the crew and other passengers, but in full sight of them. Huddling together they pulled up the hoods on their cloaks. Luckily Lieke had spotted them among the wares the merchants on the docks were hawking. Threadbare and flea infested they provided little in the way of actual protection, but it gave the appearance that they were trying to hide. This would lend credence to any story given to their pursuers.

Alastair awoke slowly. His hands immediately found his head seeking the wielder of the hammer that was pounding on it. He realized then that he'd been knocked unconscious by whomever he'd heard following them. He felt a larger male body laying face down next to him on the ground. Gingerly he sat up only to find his stomach in revolt. Turning away from the outstretched figure he emptied the contents of his stomach on the ground. That took care of most of the pain, but not all. It felt as if he'd gotten a good quick kick to the stomach as well. He stood up slowly and looked around.

Just as he'd suspected there was no sign of the girls. He looked back down at the sleeping Halasian, yes sleeping because he was snoring loud enough to wake the nearby dead, and began pulling rope out of his pack. He'd lost them due to this mountain of muscle. A sneer curled his lips and an odd glint came to his gray eyes as he set about trussing up the larger man. He wouldn't be interfering again anytime soon. The knots he was using only got tighter the harder one struggled against them. If the Barbarian struggled too hard he'd loose his hands and feet. He stood up and surveyed his work. Satisfied that the beefy man wouldn't be able to just muscle his way out Alastair surveyed the vicinity for signs of which way the sisters had fled. When he found none ([Removed for Content] the Fae for not walking like all the normal races of Norrath) he took a chance and headed back to the griffon station.

The tamer was less than helpful. From the time they'd initially landed over 12 pairs of female Fae had used the station. That had to be the worst case of coincidence Alastair had ever encountered. Sighing he told the tamer to ready a griffon for the docks station. He had to find them and fast. His master would be none too happy he'd lost them in the first place. Absentmindedly he rubbed his shoulder. The reminder that'd been left on him the last time he'd failed. He pushed the memories back and vowed it wouldn't come to that again. He'd bring them back even if it meant storming the Overlord's Citadel or Qeynos Castle. He mounted the griffon and set off towards the docks.

In the service of her Most Royal Majesty Queen Amree

Case: 33467-XH

As per instructions I have been following the Oppari sisters since their departure from the Argent home. My previous report may be referenced as to how they ended up in the White Stag Tavern of Beggar's Court in Freeport. Currently they are in the jungle of Feerrott where they seem to have joined the company of a ranger. Bellow follows a more in-depth summary of events.

Approximately one month ago the sisters were singing in the tavern as had been the practice of the place when the militia broke in. I heard tale of a rumor that they'd been tipped off that a ring of smugglers was operating out of the tavern and not giving the Overlord's men their proper cut of their dealings. I witnessed a man take the sisters out the side door of the establishment forcibly. Realizing that this might be an employee of one of the Argent brothers I followed them to continue my observation of the subjects and to verify if the Feir'Dal in question was in the service of one of the Argent brothers.

Using the Thieves' Way to get to East Freeport he bought passage for the three of them to Nektulous Forest. After disembarking from N'Mar's Ascent he began to lead them to the castle when he was overtaken by another man, a Barbarian who called himself Haydn. According to my notes Morgen Argent employs a Barbarian by this name. Haydn then carried the Feir'Dal back to where the sisters where hiding and grabbed them after a short warning.

He carried them all towards the old Druid ring. The sisters began to utilize their unique abilities eventually making him fall asleep. After the sisters quickly discussed their options they returned to the docks. Paying their way on a ship bound for the Enchanted Lands they departed.

Upon their arrival they began integrating into the local population helping with various requests. After it was suggested they travel to Rivervale by one of the locals, a rather harmless appearing Halfling to help there, they did.

Once the deputies in Rivervale no longer had need of their services they returned to the docks and sought passage back to Nektulous. From there they went to the Thundering Steppes and onto Zek, where again they aided the locals.

I can only surmise that it appears the girls are attempting to draw as much notice as possible. I fretted with the idea for awhile until I realized that by being seen everywhere they would be able to conceal themselves more effectively then not being seen at all.

This scenario played itself out in various locations across Norrath until they finally made their way into the Feerrott.

They were again engaged in a request from a local when they came upon the ranger. He seems to be of Feir'Dal descent and rather skilled. I have been unable, as yet, to discern his name. They seem to have struck up a cooperative bargain whereby they help each other out. He's taught them how to hunt and trap animals for meat and skins, how to clean them and even how to fabricate items from their bodies. They in turn, help him keep the camp, sit watch, and perform for him at night.

Every few days I leave them to their business and return to the docks to seek word of the men that pursue them. Yesterday I heard that the smaller one, the Feir'Dal, has tracked them as far as Zek. It won't be long before he catches up to them here. I have received no word on the condition or whereabouts of the Halasian.

My next report will follow when I have reportable information.

Kiithen, Saba

Probiter Class

22Q345-O91

Chapter 3

Keala and Lieke sat around the small campfire. The day was hot and humid like all the others where they kept the fire burning to keep the mosquitoes and other biting insects away. Teaeran would be back soon from the docks after sending his freight of hides, tubers and jerked meat back to Qeynos. As Keala's thoughts turned to the amiable but grouchy ranger she remembered the first day that the sisters had met him.

A faint breeze rustled the leaves overhead. It felt cool on her skin, drying the sweat that had started to form. She hardly noticed though; too deep in concentration to worry about such things. The arrow was notched and ready to fly. She'd pulled back on it and sighted down the shaft as she'd been taught. She breathed in. Another breeze danced through the jungle around her. She breathed out. The forest was still. THWUNK! The arrow pierced the heart of her prey bringing it down in one shot. She was getting better at sniping the flying snakes.

Keala and Lieke exited their hiding spot in the underbrush and made their way over to the now lifeless body. Picking it up, Lieke strung it next to the others they'd killed and began counting.

"That's the last one. We can head back now." she informed her sister. Relief was plainly written on her face. She was looking forward to a good meal. She was tired of the bread and water they'd carried with them into the jungle.

In the humid and oppressively warm jungle the bread had already started to mold and the water had gone past the point of tasting like the inside of the leather water skin. Whether it was the warmth of the water or the environment that made the liquid taste like liquid rawhide was not the problem just that she just about choked every time she took a drink.

Keala nodded and then set out for the camp they'd left just days before. It had been difficult to find the required amount of snakes the Ratonga had asked for. They'd covered most of the Feerrott it seemed in their search. They moved as quickly and silently as they could through the dense jungle. Neither of them wanted to attract the attention of any lizardmen, spiders, or any other local denizens. All either wanted was a good meal.

Lieke, who had been in the lead, stopped dead in her tracks so abruptly that her sister bumped into her. Keala was about to question her sister with a cloaked whisper when a tantalizing aroma graced her senses. Someone nearby was cooking, and it smelled delicious.

Almost in unison their stomachs growled together. Molded bread and liquid leather did little to cleanse the palette. Together they followed their noses, abandoning the return trip for the time being, in search of the delightful scent.

Soon they came across a small camp. In the thick undergrowth of the jungles that made up the Feerrott they were nearly standing inside of the camp before they noticed it. In the center was the fire and on a spit just above it was the meat they'd smelled.

From where they stood a few paces away from the fire pit they could hear the fat sizzle instantly causing their mouths to water. It was too much for the two of them. In an instant both Fae had burst into the camp and started ripping chunks of flesh off the meat shoving it into their mouths like a pack of ravenous dogs.

It was delicious. They'd never tasted anything like it before. The sensual taste of meat that'd been rubbed down with garlic and pepper then left to roast sucking up the complex flavor of an open fire overwhelmed them. Compared to molded bread it was a feast of flavors that the gods themselves could not have one upped.

By the time their stomachs were full two thirds of the roast had been devoured. Their faces and hands were covered in the succulent drippings from meat. Keala was even sucking the juices off her fingers when they heard someone approaching.

Fear shot through them both like a bolt of lightning. Whoever's dinner they'd eaten wouldn't be happy about it. They would've taken off if they hadn't eaten so much. To their dismay the girls found themselves sluggish. Not that the food had been drugged, as that thought flitted across her mind, but that the two of them had gorged on the meat until their sides were about the burst.

Before they could come up with a reasonable plan the meal's owner stepped into the camp. A Feir'Dal male with an arrogant air about him, he just stood there staring at them.

Desperate to not be taken prisoner once again Keala was about to do her best to dart for the far side of the small clearing when rather plump small bear looking like an over stuffed pillow burst in from that direction. Keala wanted to say something, but it was Lieke who found her voice first. Which was just as well since Keala's heart was still pounding in her throat.

"Begging your pardon sir, but my sister and I were near to starvation when we chanced upon your camp here. Having not eaten in days we fell upon your meal. Luckily we are but two small Fae and don't eat as much as a man of your stature. We ask for your forgiveness and wish to repay your kindness in whatever way we can."

Keala had to hand it to her sister. She was better at deception than Keala was. Luckily the animals they'd killed for that Ratonga had been dropped back in the bushes when they'd spied the meal. Heck after three days of tracking those beasts down with only rations to keep them going they looked half starved.

She could see the doubt in his green eyes as he grunted haphazardly, but made no comment about the fabricated story. Instead he asked their names, all the time watching them with his piercing eyes. Again Lieke spoke for both of them.

"I am Lieke and this is my sister Keala. May I ask your name?"

He stood there for another moment and apparently made some decision since he nodded and moved toward the fire. Removing the spit from the stakes it'd been sitting on he cut a few pieces off laying them atop one of the stones that ringed the fire and tossed the rest of the meat and grizzle to the fattened bear.

The silence it self seemed to be enough to overwhelm Keala as he pulled out a canteen and drank from it in a long swig. Removing two leather pouches from the pack that he'd set beside himself he took a handful of rice from one and added it to the other.

"Teaeran."

He went on to add water to the second pouch until he seemed satisfied and then tossed a hissing hot stone from the middle of the pit into the bag. After setting the bag containing rice and water close to the fire he leaned back against a nearby tree trunk.

They waited for more, but apparently none was coming. The sisters exchanged a glance and Keala finally spoke up.

"Mr. Teaeran, we would most like to render any aid or service that may be of help to you here in this jungle. My sister and I are lost having been separated from the group we had been with."

He looked as if he hiccupped or maybe chuckled for the briefest of moments at a joke in his head. But he only watched the two of them and Keala was starting to worry that he was not going to buy her lie. Swallowing down the lump that was building in her throat she continued.

"We have been trying to find our way back to the docks for five days, three of those without any food. We would gladly aid you in any way you need or want if you help us."

"So you're not mute relying on you sister here," he said as he gestured toward Lieke with his thumb "to do all the talking for the two of you."

"It's fine that you aren't," he said slowly as if trying to find the right words. To Keala he seemed overly confident to the point of arrogance other than when he was talking. Like a child nervously toying with a stick Teaeran seemed somewhat awkward in his speech, causing her to wonder how long it had been since he'd spoken to another living person.

"I've been in solitude here for awhile and for polite, if uninvited, dinner guests you're not so bad. Otherwise I'd have fed you to the locals and made off on my own way."

Keala swallowed hard. She didn't doubt him. That knife he'd procured to clean under his nails with was a nasty looking weapon. She was sure he knew how to use it on anything or anyone he felt he had reason to. That and Keala didn't want to end up matching her skills against anyone, even this ranger. Their cunning and guile had served them well and she planned to keep them as their primary weapons. She waited quietly next to her sister, who hummed softly as if by a nervous habit, for him to say what he would require of them.

Eyes glittering, Keala grinned, as she started to understand what her sister was doing. She wasn't humming because she was shaken but rather to weave a mild spell.

Together the girls smiled when he began to describe a partnership between bites of cooked rice and slices of meat he had prepared. He would show them how to hunt and trap animals so as not to damage their flesh or skin. Then he'd show them how to prepare the skins for use, the meat for preserving and fashioning tools from the rest of the body. In return he would require that they keep the camp in working order and cook once he felt they knew how. They agreed to this by nodding vigorously.

"I'm going to sleep now," Teaeran announced as he procured a sleeping mat. "It's been a long day and tomorrow comes early. I suggest you two get some rest as well."

He had felt the suggestion of Lieke's spell that she'd been humming. Well he supposed that was where it had come from. He had ignored it though; having someone around with the that ability might be more beneficial then a few coins to cover an eaten meal.

He moved his bedroll and lay down with his back towards them and the fire. Keala nodded to Lieke and they began to softly hum the same lullaby they'd used to lull the Halasian to sleep. In a few moments they were rewarded by hearing his snoring. Lieke banked the fire and the sisters lay next to each other huddled together for a sense of security more than warmth. It was dreadfully hot and humid here.

The morning dawned, the sunlight fighting its way to the forest floor to find the sisters still asleep next to each other. Teaeran stood there next to them looking at them. They slept better than the people in the stories he'd been told as a child. In those stories liars were tormented by horrid dreams.

These liars seemed not to notice. He shrugged. He'd lied when it suited him as well. He thought no less of them for it, and as long as they didn't try to betray him he wouldn't push the matter. He nudged the closest one in a not so gentle manner with the toe of his boot. She didn't move. He nudged harder. This time she stirred but didn't wake. He gave her a good shove the next time and called out "Wake up!" That did it.

Keala sat up with a sour expression on her face rubbing her backside where Teaeran had nudged her. She shot him a foul glance before turning to wake Lieke in a gentler manner. Teaeran grunted and moved off to the other side of the camp making quite a bit of noise with whatever it was he was doing. Lieke woke up and both girls got up stretching out the kinks that had formed during the night. They looked over to where Teaeran was bent over muttering at something.

"Is there something we can help you with?" Lieke offered as she looked up at the ranger with blurry eyes.

"Yeah, wake up earlier. We're late already. Half the traps will be full and we need to empty them quickly." He stood up to face them and tossed a couple packs at them. "Take those; you'll carry the animals for me."

Though the packs had been made to be worn as belts, they slung them cross wise over their shoulders. He led them to the first of the traps and began their education in trapping animals. The more he could teach them the more they could do and the less he'd have to. That sat well with him.

Once they arrived back at the camp he took the heavy packs from them and showed them how to skin and dress an animal for cooking. They said they were already familiar with how to cook a prepared animal so he grudginly let them take over from there. He began the work of skinning the other animals when Lieke came over to help. He could hear Keala singing softly as she went about cooking the meal. He tried to concentrate on what he was showing Lieke, but he kept getting distracted by Keala's singing.

"What is that you're singing?" he asked a little more sharply than he'd intended.

"Just a song our mother used to sing when she cooked. I can stop if you don't like it."

He shook his head. "No it is fine, it just distracts me from this. Perhaps you could sing after dinner instead?"

Lieke smiled up at him. "Sure, we'll sing you to sleep again tonight."

Teaeran let out a snort. So he had been correct in his guess last night. He hadn't had a better night's sleep since the two fae had joined him so he wouldn't complain.

Dinner being cooked (rather well to his surprise) and eaten they all settled down. The sisters sang a few songs for him that they thought he'd like and then he asked them to sing a couple others that they luckily knew. During the last one he began to yawn a bit so they all lay down for the night. Only this time there was a bed roll for the sisters as well. Apparently he'd had an extra one on hand. He mentioned that there were enough supplies to warrant a trip to the docks. They offered to help him carry the materials to the docks but he declined saying he wanted them to straighten up the camp instead. They thought it odd but didn't comment. Instead they snuggled up together on their shared bed roll and soon fell fast asleep.

The next morning they found out why he hadn't needed their help. After playing a few notes on a small wooden pipe a chestnut mare showed up. He loaded the bundles he'd made of all his goods onto her. Keala thought that was a neat trick and wondered how he'd done it, but she decided it would be better to ask him later on. They waved good bye as he set out on his trip and then began the work of cleaning and organizing the camp.

(I dedicate this chapter to my D.U.M.B.[Removed for Content].
Chapter 4

There wasn't even a hint of the impending sunrise in the sky when something woke Teaeran. He lay still with his eyes shut. Listening, testing the air, and feeling the ground for vibrations. Slowly a smile crept onto his face.

Lieke was cursing in the darkness as she fumbled around struggling to find the tinder to bring the coals in the fire back in order to cook breakfast. The group had started taking turns on who would wake up first to make breakfast. Yesterday had been Keala and tomorrow would be his turn.

All together they'd settled into a nice routine over the past three weeks by which the work was split amongst them. The sisters had surprised him by how fast they learned what he taught them and he found he no longer worried if they'd be safe and sound when he returned from his trips to the dock.

Most recently he had returned from his last trip last night to find the two girls staring at the campfire in silence. He'd heard the girls talking quietly about going to a colder environment and had first thought that they were just complaining about the heat and humidity in the jungle but the girls quieted down to near dead silence when they'd detected his presence. Had the girls merely been complaining about the environment his presence would not have derailed their conversation. So it was obvious that what the sisters were not saying encompassed so much more than what was said.

He knew that the sisters had lied and were lying to him still. Keala in particular would touch her cheek repeatedly as if pushing back some phantom hair that had drifted across her face whenever she lied. Adding their sudden silence as his presence was noted to not knowing their back story Teaeran surmised that they'd be leaving soon.

It was a shame that they'd be leaving. Rangers tend to spend a lot of time in solitude and he'd grown accustom to have the Fae sisters about. Treacherously his impudent stomach growled painting a grimace across his face. Now Keala and Lieke would know he was awake and insist he get up.

Women; they were such peculiar creatures no matter what race. Even though they never asked him to help cook or clean when it was their turn to do so, the pair would insist that he get up and tidy up his portion of camp once he awoke. Well that and also so that he could tell them a story while they worked.

Bards, children, and Fae alike it seemed had a never ending thirst for stories. It had been a long time since anyone had wanted to hear his stories and he hadn't wanted to tell them in an even longer time. Somehow, though, here with them it was different. It wasn't as tedious and exhausting as talking to a bard who would stop him every fifteen seconds to harp on some insignificant detail or never ending like the children expected.

These Fae would jest and tease him until he'd start telling a story but left the telling of the story to him and most importantly understood when he said he was finished. It seemed that even though they were both bards they'd learned somewhere to let the tale come out of its own accord, which always made for a better story. Still he chose them judiciously, picking the ones that he would tell them. Mostly tales of his namesake during the time of the shattering and smattering of tales from his adventures hunting dragons, vampires and werewolves.

He made a grand show of yawning, stretching and scratching. He heard Keala's little half laugh. He knew she'd be wearing that smirk on her face. Women expected men to fart, scratch oneself and take one's sweet time getting ready in the morning and Teaeran felt that this morning should be no different. Yet for a Fae she was awful cynical, after all weren't they supposed to be a happy and bubbly and frilly fluffy foo-foo type a race?

At least all the Fae he'd met up until these two had been, even the men, not that he'd met a lot of Fae. The difference between the sisters and the rest of their race made him wonder again what they were lying to him about. Well maybe to call their actions a lie was a tad rough. But by omitting large pieces of their history whenever the girls would speak to him about their past, Teaeran knew that he was not receiving the whole story.

It didn't really matter he supposed. He'd probably end up finding out what it was before he had to head back again which wouldn't be long since they seemed to increase how much he was able to trap and make. It would be a week at most before he'd have to return to the docks.

Standing up Teaeran stretched again while yawning just for effect before he set about clearing up his bedroll. After tidying up as the sisters expected him to he took a seat by the side of the cook fire to see how Lieke was faring with breakfast.

"So you never finished telling us about Taranax, the undead dragon in the realm of night," Keala prodded as she worked at cleaning up the mat and surrounding area that her and Lieke slept on.

"So there I was when Taranax noticed me," with a short smirk Teaeran began where he left of. "I was up on a ledge taking careful time with shots from my bow. I thought I was in the clear because rarely would any foe look away from Nerish. But I had been a little too frequent with my shots and caught the dragon's attention."

His stomach growled even louder this time as he continued with his tale. Lieke let out a little giggle. She was still listening to the story but the way Teaeran's stomach always betrayed his intentions was comical. It was even funnier how he eyed the sizzling steak that she was cooking while trying to appear like he wasn't.

"Don't worry Tea, its ready," she was dishing up his breakfast as she spoke; they'd taken to calling him Tea but he didn't complain or comment. "I know how hungry you get in the morning so I made sure to make plenty."

To Lieke's comment Teaeran grinned and Keala smirked. Looking at the ranger she never would have guessed how ecstatic he got over breakfast. His eyes seemed to double in size and sparkle a bit as Lieke placed his breakfast on a wooden truncheon for him.

"Here you go." she said handing it to him. She then poured his coffee and gave that to him after he'd settled down with his meal.

Combined, the sisters couldn't even eat half the mountain of food that Teaeran shoveled into his mouth. Their meals would've been nothing but a snack for him Keala found herself noticing. Also at the same time she started to wonder where the Feir'Dal put all of that food he devoured. He was a ravenous beast when it came to his food, pausing only a short time between mouthfuls when he needed to grab a drink of coffee to wash down whatever was stuck in his throat.

"You're gonna choke." Keala grinned as both girls started to giggle, to which Teaeran only mumbled something indiscernible through a mouthful of food as he barely paused.

With a contented smile painted across his face Teaeran removed his pipe from one of his pockets and lit it with an ember from the fire. At which point Keala fluttered over to take the wooden plate back from him. It was her turn to clean the dishes but she couldn't clear the playful smirk from her face.

Teaeran was nothing if not simple and easy to read. He did the same things every morning gorging himself on the cooking and then smoking his pipe giving the food time to settle before heading out.

Burping loudly the ranger scooted himself back a little ways to lean against the trunk of a tree same as every morning. Lieke had previously pointed out to the Ranger that if he'd just slow down while he ate his food he wouldn't have to sit there for ten to fifteen minutes letting it settle before he could move. But Teaeran was a creature of habit, Keala had surmised, and there was little that either of them could do to change that.

Once everyone was done Keala took the dishes to the nearby stream to clean. It would be her day to stay behind and finish preparing the pelts and meat they'd gotten yesterday. Lieke would accompany Teaeran to the traps and harvest more of the fruits, tubers or vegetables they'd found on previous trips if they came across any today.

Geared up for the day when Keala returned, they said their goodbyes and the sisters hugged. Teaeran seemed to take the role of an older sibling and patted Keala on the head telling her to behave. He did it every morning, Keala scowled, patting whichever sister stayed behind on the head and telling them to be good.

It was demeaning yet at the same time the sisters knew he didn't mean it in that way. The girls were fully grown adult Fae. So what if they were a third his size and an eighth of his weight, they still were not children or pets. But that fact wasn't going to stop him from patting them on their heads any sooner than he was going to stop smearing his food all over his face while eating too fast.

Lieke led the way out of the camp to the traps that were farthest away. That way as they worked their way through them they'd end up at the camp when the day was done.

Both sisters knew that their time here with Teaeran was coming to a close; they'd be leaving the Feerrott soon. They wouldn't be able to tell him where they were heading as it would endanger him and they had no wish to do that to him. He'd been so helpful and accommodating, even if he was gruff and grumpy at times; well ok most of the time.

Keala set to work hanging the meat to dry over the fire before she started on the hides. It would take her most of the day to make it through the stack of hides she and Tea had brought back yesterday. It wasn't that she had dozens upon dozens of hides to clean up, but each one was time intensive on its own. Each hide had to have any meat or fat cleaned off as well as being rubbed down with salt so that the leather wouldn't rot.

Neither of the sisters claimed to be geniuses when it came to leather working, but Keala could have sworn that the hides needed to be soaked, washed and stretched. However Teaeran said they only needed to be cleaned up and salted so that is what they did. Clean the hides, salt them, dry them and then finally tie the stiff dried hides into bundles to eventually be shipped from the docks by Teaeran.

About halfway through the morning she got up to stretch the crick out of her back. Sitting on the ground hunched over for the last few hours scraping with the ulak made for a Feir'Dal sized hand and rubbing the coarse salt was murder on her back and arm muscles.

As she rocked from side to side and twisted two and fro trying to work the kink out Keala noticed something peeking out of Tea's bedroll. She knew she should leave it alone, but curiosity always got the better of her so she didn't even try to fight it.

Carefully she moved the object around a bit and finally was able to recognize it as the thing he'd been working on at night after dinner while they sang. He hadn't told them what it was even after repeated questioning so her curiosity grew even stronger. Keala'd been willful enough not to dig through his things but seeing it sticking out overwhelmed her.

Gently she moved it this way and that until she was able to get it out. She held the item up to get a better look. It looked very similar to the packs he had them wear when they went to clear the traps. This one was different though. The way he'd made the strap and shaped the pack itself spoke to the fact it'd been made for a winged race. It would sit perfectly on her back without interfering with the movements of her wings.

He'd managed to make the strap in such a way as to allow a Fae to put it on without aid. She had to admire the design, it was very ingenious. She tried it out and found it even easier and more comfortable than she'd guessed. Removing it she carefully put it back exactly as she'd found it and set back to work, this time with a small smile. She'd have to talk to Lieke about doing something for Tea when they returned tonight.

The silly ranger always tried to show a demeanor of being gruff, blunt, and down right rude at times. But this proved that she and Lieke were right; he was a nice guy in the end. Once you got past how much of an [Removed for Content] he could be at times that is.

The sun followed its path across the sky until morning turned into afternoon. Keala once again stretched out her muscles, only this time she'd finished her work with the pelts and meat. Now it was time to start the evening meal. They'd be returning soon and they'd be hungry when they arrived.

Getting the fire going nice and hot she then let it die down to just coals. While that was going she made some dough and shaped it into small individual loaves which she then wrapped in large leaves and placed among the coals. She made similar leaf wrapped packets of seasoned meat and vegetables that she'd found the day before and put them in the coals with the loaves. Lastly, anther pot of coffee was placed on the side of the coals to start brewing.

She was completely engrossed in her work and was even humming to her self as she grabbed a container for some water that she needed to fetch from the stream. She began to head in that direction and froze.

Standing in the clearing of the camp like some ghastly apparition was the Feir'Dal that'd tried to kidnap her and Lieke from Freeport. He wore a sinister smile on his face with an evil glint in his eyes.

Keala felt the blood leave her face. Her heart began to race and she felt fear begin to fill her throat making it hard to swallow. Her grip tightened on the container making her knuckles go white. How could he have found her so quickly? She'd been so careful of the trail they'd left. Too long, she realized, they'd stayed here with Tea too long.

She groaned inwardly. Now despite what they'd wanted he'd be dragged into this. She didn't have the luxury to dwell on that though. She had to focus on the man in front of her, not the one with her sister.

Chapter 5

"Who are you?" maybe if she played dumb it would buy her some time. Keala knew that the man was going to try to seize her and her sister again. But maybe, just maybe, if she played dumb an opportunity would present itself when he lost his temper. "What do you want with me?"

"Alastair. I work for Mr. Caerwyn Argent. Ah, I see you know that name," he said as Keala flinched upon hearing Argent's name. "Good. Then you'll know he's not a man to be trifled with."

She hadn't meant to flinch. This Feir'Dal had abducted her and her sister from their hiding place at the inn in Freeport.

"Grab your things and come with me. Now." He brandished his blade to emphasize the last word.

"Of course Mr. Alastair," Keala said with and overly sweet tone in her voice. "But must you wave that thing about? I thought you said you wouldn't harm me."

"I'll put it away when you get in that sack," Alastair said in a gruff voice after throwing a sack at her feet.

"A sack!?" Keala feigned surprise. "Blessed be, why would you have me do that?"

"Enough of your mouth!," Alastair shouted as he wagged the point of his rapier in her face. "I said get in there."

The first thought to run Keala's mind was to flee but she knew the moment she tried that this Alastair character wouldn't hesitate to plunge his sword through her. It seemed he was more than he'd let on in their previous encounter. Slowly Keala made her way toward Alastair after picking up the sack at her feet. She stopped within reach of him and began to place herself in the sack making a show of having a hard time and being rather awkward with it.

Eventually his impatience began to reveal itself and he started barking at her to hurry up. She was just about ready. In all her fidgeting she had managed to remove what looked to be a decorative pin from her clothing. It looked like a tiny jeweled dagger, as it in fact was. But it held yet another secret, its blade was coated with poison. Lightning fast she grabbed his outstretched wrist sunk the tiny dagger into it deeply causing him to drop his weapon.

He let out a yelp and with his other arm grabbed her by her wings. He hauled her up so they were eye to eye. She struggled but couldn't break free or reach him to do any further damage. His gray eyes fixated on her with a look of pure hate. She could tell he was beginning to feel the effects of the poison and must realize the blade had been treated.

"He said he needed you alive. He never specified in what condition."

With that he threw her onto the ground and she heard a loud snapping sound. She felt the pain rush up and down her side like a wildfire. He'd broken her left wing and arm.

She screamed at the top of her lungs. He laughed maniacally. Grabbing her by her good arm he unceremoniously stuffed her in the sack and secured it tightly with a leather strap that was then attached to his belt. Feeling sure she couldn't escape him this time he began to get his bearings for the return to the docks.

Realizing then that there was a sister he cursed under his breath and looked for a hidden area away from the camp. He secured the sack to a tree. When he heard her moans he realized that wouldn't do so he felt around until he located the shape of her head and knocked it upside the tree rendering her unconscious. He then positioned himself to overcome the other one on her return.

"Well that's the last of them for the day, thank Tunare." Lieke placed the overburdened pack on her back. "I'm beat. Wonder what Kea's making for dinner. I bet it'll be good."

Their stomachs growled in unison.

"Well, c'mon no reason to stay here any longer." Teaeran said as he began to lead them back to the camp.

A scream ripped through the jungle. Together they froze. Teaeran squinted his eyes narrowing them in on the direct the sound came from and Lieke's blood ran cold at the sound.

"KEALA!" Lieke screamed and frantically pushed her way past the ranger.

She raced towards the camp in an all out frantic sprint. There was no doubt in Lieke's mind the scream had come from her sister, there was no one else around. Moving at a break neck speed she slammed full force into the ranger's chest and he grabbed her tightly. Slightly dazed by the fact that he had somehow managed to get in front of her she nonetheless began to attack him.

"What are you doing? Let me go! Something's wrong!" She pushed and pummeled his chest. Her tiny fists doing nothing but give off a small thudding sounds as she beat her hands against the imbued leather.

"Lieke tell me the truth. Why are you and your sister here?"

She looked into his green eyes prepared for another lie but realized it would do no good; defeated she crumpled and told him the whole story.

"We had to run away," Lieke blurted out. "We were trained form a young age as agents for Kelethin until we found out what we were going to have to do. It was then Keala met her ex-fiancée. We were safe with him from the Agency until we learned he planned to use us as well. So now we're running from him and Kelethin. We won't be used like that."

Teaeran only nodded as Lieke gave her speech. She was speaking so quickly that it was hard for him to discern her words but as she took a breath his mind was able to catch up with her just before she started anew.

"You have no idea what they mean to make us do," Lieke choked through the tears that poured down her face. "We never should have brought you into this I'm so sorry. But I need to save her. They're going to make her do terrible things."

When she finished he nodded to her and led her to a spot near the camp and told her to wait there. In the thick jungle undergrowth she huddled down as Teaeran threw some decomposing leaf litter on top of her to conceal the little Fae. Lieke didn't like the idea but at least from where he had left her she could see some of the camp.

"Stay," he whispered as he moved around the perimeter not noticing anyone in the camp. However that didn't mean whoever the culprit was hadn't left. He or she had to know there was a sister so that meant someone would be here; waiting for Lieke.

Silently cursing the density of the jungle Teaeran knew he'd have to bait the culprit into coming out by entering the camp. Walking into the center he began to call for Keala.

Catching sight of movement to his right out of the corner of his eye, he had just enough time to dodge the throwing dagger that narrowly missed his head and face his opponent. As he did so Teaeran had also loosed his rapier from its scabbard, holding it at the ready. He sized up his opponent.

Male and Feir'Dal of approximately the same height as him but with a slighter build stared back at him with cold gray eyes and stark white hair that matched his own. Outside of a few trolls and ogres Teaeran had run into this man possessed the foulest breath on Norrath. It was rank to the point that Teaeran could clearly smell the acrid odor several feet away from his foe.

"I didn't expect you to dodge that," the Feir'Dal sneered. He had the look of a brigand or assassin Teaeran guessed; but not a very intelligent one. Had the abductor aimed his throwing dagger at his chest instead of his head Teaeran would have had a hole there right now. Either an amateur or overconfident he guessed.

"I see they've found a would-be protector," the foul elf spat at Teaeran as he drew his own rapier. "Heed my words and leave now."

Teaeran frowned as he rested his other hand on the pommel of his second rapier. This disgusting [Removed for Content] poor excuse for a Feir'Dal, for his lack of hygiene, was moving his feet in a way that showed he possessed at least some element of skill. He wasn't an amateur like Teaeran had hoped.

"Walk away and forget these fairy trollops. They're no concern of yours."

"Quite correct," Teaeran scoffed as a grin slowly crossed his face. This brigand or whatever he thought him self wasn't going to back down. The only way this was going to conclude was with one of them dead. "They aren't my concern, but you've interrupted my dinner."

Sneering at the cocky ranger, as Teaeran appeared to Alastair, Alastair drew his pair of rapiers and scowled as he lunged at Teaeran. Not only had the troublesome sisters found themselves a protector but one that fancied himself a jokester. Letting his smirk pull one corner of his mouth up Teaeran drew his second blade. Not a conical rapier like was commonly found in the hands of the upper casts in Qeynos; his blade was flattened to provide a dual slicing edge. Still thin and flexible the weapon was a rapier, just one adjusted to giving him a cutting edge as well as the piercing tip. The other elf's blade was aimed at his face.

Easily sidestepping the crude attack Teaeran batted Alastair's weapon to the side. Using his momentum Teaeran rolled his body as he pushed the blade away from him. Pivoting on his planted foot Teaeran kicked Alastair squarely in shoulder with his other foot. The powerful round house kick sent the Feir'Dal back peddling in an effort to avoid falling to the ground while bringing of his rapiers up to fend off the ensuing counterattack from the ranger.

Still moving with his built up momentum, Teaeran corkscrewed from foot to foot using his blades to sweep away the brigand's before landing savage kick after kick to Alastair's head and torso. As the unrelenting punishment finally took its toll on Alastair the brigand fell to the ground. Unable to even hold the rapier in his right hand; it lay on the ground a few feet away from him. The abusive strikes of the ranger's blades against his own and the brutal beating courtesy of Teaeran's boots left him panting and helpless on the ground.

Alastair had fought and killed several men before meeting this ranger but never one so unrelenting in his onslaught. Doing his best to heft the rapier he still grasped in his left hand he saw it easily get kicked away by vengeful ranger. If that Fae [Removed for Content] hadn't poisoned him with that weapon of hers he would've stood a chance.

"Where is she?," Teaeran demanded as he pressed the tip of his blade against the Alastair's throat. As he had expected the brigand had been versed in fighting with the sword but with Teaeran utilizing unconventional attacks he had been unable to mount a serious defense.

"Wait wait wait," Alastair spat at the ranger.
