I've seen some stuff about refining raw materials into other ones to be used in recipies being put in during LU34 (?), and i've searched, but i've been unable to find a straight answer to this: where do you buy the books that allow you to turn raw materials into "higher ones"? As an example, i'm an outfitter currently, and i can't find a merc that sells the book i need to be able to practice the geomancy (i think) skill that would allow me to turn raw leather pelts into tanned raw leather. I've searched the forums, and looked at the stickies, but i'm more confused. Do i have to upgrade to Tailor specifically (as i said, i'm a general Outfitter now) in order to get the mercs to sell me these books?

I believe there might be one single quest or something left that requires the skill(I don't even know if it is still in the game) but you never need the books. If you will notice the skill raised along with and is always equal to your main crafting skill

Your information is badly outdated. With GU 24 you take the raws right from the nodes and use them in a recipe. No more refining or subcombines.
