I have gotten my son addicted to the game, and he does really enjoy it. However, when his dad bought him his pc, ignoring my advice he bought him a laptop rather than desktop, and tbh the laptop is rather pathetic, but it is all he has to play the game with.

His zoning did take an average of 10mins, he often crashes when zoning, and falls through the earth an average of 2-3 times an hour. Considering how long it takes him to zone, it leaves very little time to actually play the game itself.

I have gotten him to put his graphic settings of extreme performance and that has lowered his zone time by a couple of mins, but it still takes over 5mins to zone.

At home he has a 4mb broadband connection, and when he stays with me he has a 10mb, but it doesnt make that much difference to his game performance.

His dxdiag is below (couldnt post it all as error when posting says too much text).

If anyone can offer any advice, settings to change in an ini file or something, or on his pc, that would be great.

------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 8/23/2007, 16:27:45 Machine name: xxxxxxxx Operating System: I sry your son is having problems..Laptops are pretty much non upgradeable. I myself dont know much about computers and normally leave that to my husband. If it were me I would go out myself and buy my child a descent computer and let my hubby yell at me for a day or two. The computer can be used for school eventually too. I bought my computer at Dell .. (hubby was too busy building his own computer to worry about me hehe). Just make sure it has good graphics card, ram and processor. You can get some excellent deals and you can apply on your own and take about a week to arrive at your door. But thats just my opinon perhaps others will be better able to help.

Hello:

Looking at your configuration the first and most immediate (and most easily solved) is SYSTEM MEMORY.

448 MB is simply not enough to run EQ2 meaningfully. You'll need to invest in a SODIMM footprint memory module appropriate to your PC's speed. It's going to be either DDR or DDR-2, regretably they're not interchangeable, so a little time spent reading the manual will help. That, or perhaps the web page for technical parameters of that model will boast "DDR-II" or somesuch to help guide you.

You'll want at least 512 MB upgrade; safer to buy 1 GB, once you know which memory module you need. Why? simply because there is only 1 available (open) memory slot on most laptops. The slot will typically need a size 0 Philips screwdriver to access, and a little bit of mechanical skill/patience. Or a trip to your local PC retailer, whichever you consider less painful.

After you upgrade memory, you'll want to fine tune the in-game video options. There is an excellent user written guide to optimizing video settings already written, so I am not going to repeat it. The default settings out of the box are not right for a laptop; it's sort of a file to fit situation. Laptops arent officially supported because every one is a little different, they are problematic, and its easier to just push them away than burn 10-20 minutes per user in high end support costs. This said, my laptop (which was pretty modest) runs circles around many desktop, but only if I tweak it... alot.

If you can't find the settings for in game video or need more help figuring out your SODIMM type, PM me and I'll see your mail tomorrow or next week... I hope. I dont often check my mail here.

    - GS

retired PCI bus engineer, 21 yrs experience

    EQ2 patron 2 years

what hurting him the most is the ram...if im reading it right he has 448M?

i had long zone times with 1G, i now more ram and it has made all the difference.

Some laptops can add more ram, u want to see how much ram u can get and max it out, unless its less than 1g.

Good luck

Here's the link I wanted for video tweaks (but really your RAM is issue #1)

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...?topic_id=17133

Good luck

It's the Ram, here's the deal though at 448 your short 64 megs of RAM, that normally means you are running shared video memory of 64 megs but the video card shows 256.

I did a quick google of your laptop model, you are using shared ram, it's DDR2 SoDimm running at 667 mhz. How much are you willing to spend? For the best experience with the laptop I recommend buying 2 1 gig chips for a total of 2 gigs of ram which is the max supported for that PC, then in bios set the shared memory for the video card from 64 to 128 megs and your son will play quite well, zone much faster, and be happier overall.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820145012

That is a link to the ram that should work well for your PC you would need to order 2 of the, they are 40 bucks each with a 10 dollar rebate so about 60 bucks for the memory.

After the upgrade and the bios video ram change you should be able to increase the video from extreme performance up a notch or so.

And here is why it's slow, other than everyone telling you to buy ram. EQ2 needs about 1 gig of ram to play smooth, your PC takes about 200 megs of ram when booted. you have 228 megs of ram for EQ2 right now.

Computers will use the hard drive as ram when it runs out of actual memory, hard drives perform at about 1/10 of the speed that ram does when it's acting like ram.

If you buy only 1 gig of total ram then you will still fall short of the memory needed to run eq2 smooth, however putting in the 2 gigs of ram for 60 bucks gives you plenty of extra room, and allows the video to get a upgrade too.

Vodroc is correct, you need RAM! 2 gigs makes a huge difference compared to 1 gig.

Good luck!

Slowdethh

I am currently Running An ACer Aspire 5672 WMLi-120gbIntel COre Due T2300,2MB L2 Cache, 667FSB.ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Using Omega driver(note No new updates on ATI site for this Card)2GB DDR2 Duel channel ram.(According to crucial upgradable to 4GB)I can play on extreme custom settings when alone, but when others on on the screen i take alot of lag when magic is being used. In neriak it is very slow. I have to go on balanced or below to get a decent frame rate. Also Qeynos Harbor(near the docks) is also slow due to frame rate drop.
