View Full Version : repeated crashes in game

Hi all, I need some advice here as this is really doing my skull in.   I have been playing everquest 2 for about 3 years now, recently got a new computer which originally played everquest 2 absolutely fine however in the last three days, it has started to lock up, to the point where i have to do a cold reboot.   It has now got to the point where i can only be on the game for five mins or less before it crashes.   I run vista (which is a nightmare all on its own), and have a dell 9200 computer, running an Nvidia 8600 GTS graphics card.   I have updated all the drivers, closed every programme I am not using before playing, virus scanned my computer, and read through loads of posts on here, trying out pretty much every single suggestion on the boards, and absolutely nothing seems to solve it.  Its driving me quietly up the wall now as I really love playing EQ2 however am not willing to risk damaging my computer with repeated reboots without correct shutdown.   anyone who can offer some advice would be really really appreciated thanks in advance! yeah i tried that one already as well... i dont get any error message at all, it just freezes completely to the point where i have to reboot. <img src="/smilies/9d71f0541cff0a302a0309c5079e8dee.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  i'll sort out the dxdiag stuff in just a mo...

ok - try this after you post your DXDiag info. Set your game to the graphics setting "best performance", and run around a bit and see if the problem pops back up. If it does, then you may have a heat problem with your system.  This may be due to a hot room, but since it is a consumer computer, it is probabbly unlikely unless you live in somewhere like Iraq during the summer. This could also be an issue related to a lot of other things.  BIOS version, system drivers, a single file not installed properly in windows, 1 byte damaged in your RAM for what ever reason, lots of stuff.   We can narrow down what that problem could be, if you can post that DXDiag info, and any installed/removed software or hardware over the last 96 hours since you played the game properly. hello hello <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  i updated the bios as well the other day - and yes, I have tried running round in high performance and it still crashes just as often <img src="/smilies/9d71f0541cff0a302a0309c5079e8dee.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />   The only program I had put on my computer since about a day before all this started was the latest patch - I put yahoo messenger on about a week and a half ago (it has now been taken off - was wondering if maybe that was causing part of the problem.  same with limewire, also been removed)

<p>I also had a lock up issue in EQ2.  All other games seemed fine.  I managed to solve it by doing this: </p><p>Download and run <a href="http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Rivatuner</a> (I used version 2.02) Click "Customize..." under the Driver Settings Choose "DirectDraw and Direct3D Settings" from the buttons that pop up (It has a DirectX icon) A new dialog box pops up.  Select the "VSync" tab at the top. Change the "Prerender limit" to 8.  Mine was previously set to 3.</p><p> I hope it works for you too.</p>

<p>brilliant, I'll try both of those.  I also have a coupla things to try suggested by the help team, and also for anyone else struggling, I found that removing the vista update from the 16th of august has made a major difference - it still crashes from time to time but nothing like as badly or as often as before...</p><p> thanks very much to everyone who has helped with this, its really greatly appreciated!</p>
